Biggest world problems with a technological solution?

Cancer?
Clean Water?
Renewable Energy?

Why does the world have a water problem?
3
But >99% is salty, undrinkable
But wait, 85% live next to an ocean, so desal is the answer!
52,000,000,000 gallons for each of us 7 billion people
www.altelainc.com4
‘Pressure’ is the problem!
All manmade desal requires ‘pressure’
Why is water desalination so expensive?
High operating costs
High capital costs
www.altelainc.com5
No pressure
No electricity
Evaporate off oceans
Nature has been doing the ‘perfect two-step’ in desal
for four and a half billion years!
Condense as rain

Not driven by electricity
Inexpensive plastic
No pressure
‘No pressure’, man!
A new way of thinking about the problem

Treating water naturally - turning a liability into an asset:
brackish mixed-contaminant Oil &Gas Produced Water

What is Altela?
Altela is a unique oil and gas service provider and a unique investment
opportunity:
It’s a ‘water company’ play
A ‘clean-tech company’ play
And an ‘energy company’ play
All wrapped into one company
www.altelainc.com
Altela represents a simple, elegant, inexpensive, new form of water
desalination products:
World’s only economic desal that does not use pressure
So, no pressure vessel is required
Which must be constructed of metal to withstand the pressure
For which the metal corrodes in the presence of brackish water
For which high CapEx, high-alloy metals are required to extend
lifetime of pressure vessels, pumps, valves, pipes, etc.
And for which high OpEx costs are required because pressure
requires pressure pumps, which require expensive electricity
What is Altela’s Uniqueness?

Rain water comes from brackish unpotable water – the oceans:
Step 1: Passive solar energy evaporates water at the ocean surface
Using low-grade heat and no pressure
This clean water vapor is later released as rain in:
Step 2: Cold air cannot hold as much moisture as hot air
So rising air gets colder, causing condensation – rain
And the amount of energy given off in Step 2 is equal to the amount of
energy used in Step 1: Mother Nature is very energy efficient.
Mother Nature’s Water Desalination Process
www.altelainc.com 14Treating water naturally.
Altela has developed a new commercial water desalination process that
mimics Mother Nature, but improves on her too:
AltelaRain® brings Steps 1 and 2 together just 200 microns (0.008”)
apart, rather than thousands of miles apart
So the energy given back in the condensation step is used over and
over again in the evaporation step:
Reducing the amount of even this low-grade inexpensive heat to only
one-fourth of what it is for conventional thermal distillation
That is, Altela desalinates 3 gallons of water for the energy to
evaporate 1 gallon conventionally
Since we use no pressure, all components are made with
inexpensive plastics, rather than metals that corrode
Improving on Mother Nature’s Desalination

IP-protected evaporation/condensation
process: like nature’s rain from ocean salt
water
Makes 3 gallons of clean water from the
heat energy that would usually only make 1
gallon
Operates on low-grade waste heat or waste
well-head gas – free in many locations
Robust: no pressure, no high
temperatures, no membranes;
manufactured from inexpensive plastics
that do not corrode, rather than metal
