TRANSCRIPT

From the Desk of Pastor Jim…

Disappointment is an unavoidable reality of life in this world. Disappointment happens when my expectations do not match life’s realities.

Whether it is being overlooked for a position, rejected in love, passed over for a

promotion, or let down by a friend, disappointment can really sting.

Disappointment sets off a chain of emotional responses including stress, anger,

frustration, sadness, and discouragement. Chronic disappointment, if not dealt

with, has the potential to evolve into deeper problems such as depression,

bitterness, resentment, hatred, and despair.

One of the most vivid pictures of disappointment found in the Bible is recorded

in Job, chapter six. In the midst of enormous suffering, Job tells his “friends”

how he feels about their so-called support: (note to self: if I have “friends” like

Job did, I need new friends!)

“My brothers, you have proved as unreliable as a seasonal brook that overflows

its banks in the spring when it is swollen with ice and melting snow. But when

the hot weather arrives, the water disappears. The brook vanishes in the heat.

The caravans turn aside to be refreshed, but there is nothing to drink, so they

die. The caravans from Tema search for this water; the travelers from Sheba

hope to find it. They count on it but are disappointed. When they arrive, their

hopes are dashed” (Job 6:15–20 NLT).

Ever felt that way? You were hoping for refreshing water, but you ended up with

a sand sandwich?

So what do you do when we face disappointment?

1. Evaluate your expectations.

Sometimes we are disappointed because we have set unrealistic expectations.

We expect someone to behave a certain way “just because” – and then when

they don’t, we feel let down. Too often we set ourselves up for disappointment

by painting pictures in our mind of what we think should happen – pictures that

hinge on unwritten or unspoken expectations. “They should just know” is not a

reasonable expectation.

2. Communicate your disappointment.

When we cover up our emotions, our hearts will become infected. Any negative

emotion, when not released, turns toxic. We have to get it out in order to work it

out. In fact, it is often this step that reveals unrealistic expectations. Revealing

your feeling is the beginning of healing. King David was a master of letting his

feelings out—just look at his Psalms!

3. Rest your hope on God.

Disappointment is ultimately expecting something that’s not going to be as

reliable as God is. Nothing on this earth can be counted on. Not people, not

companies, not countries, not even you! Sin started this chain reaction of

disappointment. The only way to stop being disappointed is to stop risking and

stop loving which, of course, means we stop growing and we start dying.

Disappointment is inevitable. Being disappointed is not.

When we shift our faith and trust fully in the One who will never let us down,

we discover hope. “Then you will know that I am the Lord; those who hope in

Me will not be disappointed” Isaiah 49:23 “Faith shows the reality of what

we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.“ Hebrews 11:1

When you’re let down, don’t stay down.

Lent Begins on February 14th with Ash Wednesday

When a loved one is dying, their last words are important to us. What they

choose to say is what they deem as true and important for us to remember.

During the crucifixion, Jesus made seven amazing statements while on the

cross. This Lenten season we will dive into all four Gospels to deeply examine

the seven things He said and we'll learn what Jesus accomplished and

fulfilled by dying on the cross.

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. Luke 23:34

Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise. Luke 23:43

Woman, behold your son. Son Behold your mother. John 19:26–27

My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34

I thirst. John 19:28

It is finished. John 19:29-30

Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. Luke 23:46

Please join us for special Ash Wednesday worship services on February 14th,

at noon and 7:00 PM. Our focus this Lenten season will be on the Seven

Last Words (statements) that Jesus made from the cross! Each Wednesday

will begin with a meal from 6:00 to 6:45 PM with worship following at 7:00

PM. Other than Ash Wednesday, we will follow a ‘teaching sermon’ format in

the gym. Instead of traditional worship, Pastor Jim will lead an interactive

teaching sermon based on the Last Words of Jesus. Please come and take

this opportunity to learn more and grow in your walk with Jesus Christ during

Lent this year.

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Salvation Army Seguin Unit we want to extend our gratitude to you for providing coverage for our 2017 Salvation Army Kettle Campaign by “ringing the bells” to fill the kettles. A sincere Thank You to all the volunteers for your service at Walmart. Through your efforts and the efforts of other community volunteers between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we raised over $44,000. This would not have been possible without the help of all our wonderful volunteers like you. God bless you.

Yours in Community and Christian Service,

The 2017 Kettle Campaign Committee: Jenifer Ehlers, Bryan Terp, Liz Hilsdorf, Tim Gerhardt, Vicky Kleen, and Kyle Kraft

Faith Lutheran Church Retreat Set

for April 20-22 in Fentress You won’t want to miss a weekend

of outdoor fun, learning

opportunities, fellowship, and

good food! Faith’s annual retreat

will be held Friday, April 20th

through Sunday, April 22, at

Leisure Resort in Fentress - just

20 miles from Faith. The camp’s

amenities include the riverfront,

swimming pool, volleyball and

basketball courts, horseshoes,

and miniature golf course.

The clubhouse will be used as a central gathering place Friday evening and

Saturday. On Saturday evening there will be planned activities, a potluck

meal, and a worship service. Bryce Formwalt, Director of Mission Growth for

the LCMC Texas District, will be the special guest speaker for the weekend.

Those who do not wish to spend the weekend are welcome to come and join

us for the day on Saturday.

Each family is responsible for making their own reservations by calling: 512-

213-0112 or 800-248-4103. Please Note: All regular RV site & cabin prices

will be reduced by a 30% discount for all attending our Faith Retreat

Weekend. Be sure to tell them you are with the Faith Lutheran Church

Retreat when making your reservation. Please make your reservations early,

as Leisure Resort is very popular, and a limited number of cabins and RV

sites are temporarily on hold for Faith’s retreat. Leisure Resort has concrete

pads with full hook ups for RV's under beautiful, large pecan trees, shady

water and electric sites for pop-ups and tents and 3 different style cabins

that sleep from 4 - 6 people. They even have a tree house that sleeps 5; but

this has no plumbing. You must provide your own linens and cooking utensils

in all rental units; no pets or smoking allowed in any rental unit. One tent is

allowed on each rental unit site (except for the Duplex Cabins) for an

additional $10 (but maximum of 6 people per site, including the tent.)

See their website at www.LeisureResort.net for more information, pictures,

and complete details of what each cabin has in it and the regular cost (but

remember you will get a 30% discount). Also, look for a display with pictures

and brochures and park maps in the narthex.

Additional Retreat Committee members are still needed. Please contact

Doris Engelhardt or Chuck or Sue Powell if interested in helping plan the

retreat.

It's been said that the greatest days in your life are the day you were born and the day you figured out why. Indeed, one of the most significant discoveries you can make is discovering what God has created you for.

I was reminded of this recently as we studied the first reading for the second Sunday after Epiphany. In 1 Samuel 3 we read of how Samuel discovered his calling. Three times the boy Samuel heard the voice of God calling and three times the boy ran to his master Eli as he assumed it was Eli who was calling him. When it happened a third time, Eli realized the voice calling the boy must be God's. So he instructed Samuel to go back and when he heard the voice call to him again, simply say "Speak, for your servant is listening."

This lesson serves as an excellent reminder that not only are we to seek to discover our own calling from God, but also help others to hear and answer their calls too. As Eli mentored Samuel in the faith and helped him to hear and recognize the call of God, all God's faithful are called to help mentor and guide others, especially those who are younger, to discover how God is calling them to live and to serve.

All across the Texas District congregation members are concerned about the future of the church. And there is good reason for concern as they look around and see aging pastors and congregations, dwindling youth and children's programs, and little movement among young people in preparation for Christian ministry. But instead of wringing our hands there is something that each of us can and should be doing. Maybe a significant part of our own calling is helping others discover theirs. Maybe we are called to be Elis to invest in young Samuels... or Pauls to invest in young Timothys.

Inevitably the question will be asked: How? How does an older person meaningfully engage in the faith development of a younger person? The key is to get back to the basics of living out our faith in community. The Christian faith compels us to engage with others around us no matter what age, race, or socio-economic status they are. Let's join Jesus on his mission and get to know our neighbors again, especially those who are younger or different. Love them like Jesus would, without judgement or shame, but pure, grace-filled kindness and love that can communicate across every social barrier we think might be there. And most of all, when the time is right and one comes to you seeking guidance, like Eli you can point him or her to God and teach him or her to say with an open heart, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." Pastor Bryce Formwalt is the Director of Mission Growth for the LCMC Texas District. Residing in Georgetown, Pastor Bryce is available to coach congregations on mission. Preschool News Submitted by Preschool Director Sharon Stollewerk

We were thrilled to be back at school after the Christmas holidays but can't believe that we are halfway through the school year!

Mrs. Chris and Ms. Avis's Mother's Morning Out Class had fun learning about the calendar and winter. Each morning they added features- nose, eyes, mouth, buttons, hat, scarf, and mittens to the felt snowmen on the wall. They made a very special Jonah and the whale art project. They colored Jonah, who dangled in the whale's stomach, and shot out of the whale's mouth when they blew the birthday blower that was attached to it. So fun! They celebrated White Day, and they played with "snow" (shaving cream) and enjoyed building snowmen and driving cars through the snowdrifts.

Mrs. Beasley's Three Day class studied winter weather and made beautiful snowflakes. They had fun being scientists, and they made and played with icebergs in the sensory table. They began the sound table game and studied the letters J and L. They stamped J's in paint, painted with Legos, and made a lamp with the letter L.

Mrs. Neuman and Ms. Stollewerk's Five Day classes studied units on winter weather, Arctic animals, and hibernation. For the first time in many years, the children understood what winter weather was because they experienced playing in actual snow, complete with building a snowman! They had fun

making a hibernation card game and learning which animals hibernate and which do not. They learned interesting facts about polar bears, and that they have BLUBBER so they can stand the cold. The much anticipated Sound Table Game began with the study of the letters J and L. Everywhere you looked there were activities and manipulatives to introduce the letters: jeans on J's, journal writing, Jonah and the whale, jets, lacing, Legos, Lincoln Logs, and the Little Lost Lamb.

Both the Three and Five Day teachers have been busy with student evaluations. Parent/teacher conferences will be scheduled soon, and these evaluations will be reviewed.

Chapel is a special time for the children. We learned about Jesus as a Boy, Jonah and the Whale, and the Little Lost Lamb. As always, thank you for your support of the children and staff of Faith Lutheran Preschool

What is Church Women United? The answer to that question is “Church Women United is a racially, culturally,

theologically inclusive Christian women’s movement, celebrating unity in

diversity and working for a world of peace and justice.” WOW, how awesome is

that!! According to their pamphlet, they were founded in 1941 as an historic

grassroots movement of women which shares a vision of Christian unity and

prayerful action. How fortunate for the ladies of Faith Lutheran Church—they

have an opportunity to be a part of this wonderful Christian group!! CWU has
