High Performance Cooled CCD Camera SystemsApogee Instruments' new Alta Series cameras are available with a wide variety of CCDs for diverse applications: from 512 x 512 to more than 22 megapixels, with support for interline, and both front and back-illuminated full frame CCDs.

How to Choose?The efficiency with which a CCD creates electricity from light (also known as quantum efficiency, or QE) is a key factor in choosing a CCD. Back-illuminated CCDs are typically used for very low light applications due to their high quantum efficiency (QE). Kodak micro-lensed Blue Plus CCDs (ME suffix on the part number) also have high peak QE, but much less overall QE than the back-illuminated CCDs. The UV enhanced versions of the back-illuminated CCDs have the highest QE in the UV. Back-illuminated CCDs have the highest QE in the near-IR, but are subject to etaloning (fringing caused by internal reflections). Interline transfer CCDs can take much shorter exposures and read out at higher frame rates because they do not require electromechanical shutters. The Alta U42 has a back-illuminated full frame 4-megapixel CCD with exceptionally high quantum efficiency.

The standard midband coating has the highest peak in the visible; the optional broadband coating has somewhat higher QE in the near UV but lower QE across the visitble. (See the U42-UV for the non-MPP UV-enhanced version.)

The Alta U42-UV has a back-illuminated full frame 4-megapixel CCD with sensitivity down to 200 nm. This CCD does not operate in MPP mode, so has much higher dark current than other E2V CCDs.

The Alta U4000 and U4000C have a 4-megapixel interline transfer sensor with high quantum efficiency and twice the dynamic range of similar Sony sensors. Low noise and small pixels are ideal for OEM applications, biological sciences, and fundus imaging. The U4000 uses the monochrome Kodak KAI-4022M CCD; the color version uses the KAI-4022CM (see page 2 for quantum efficiency curve.)

ALTA Camera Systems:New High Cooling Housing D09F

The optional high cooling housing is available using fans (D09F) or liquid circulation (D09L). Cooling for either model is 65-70C below ambient for large format CCDs like the Kodak KAF-16803 (Alta U16MhC camera), and cooling to 70-75C below ambient for smaller CCDs like the e2v CCD47-10 (Alta U47hC camera). Typical reduction in dark current compared to our standard housings is about a factor of 10. D09 housings include a professional grade Melles Griot 63mm shutter. For additional details, please see the specifi cation sheet for the standard camera (for example, the U16M data sheet).

Sometimes CCD images show very faint ghost images from previous bright images. These residual bulk images (“RBIs”) are caused by trapped electrons, predominantly created at deeper depths by longer wavelengths. RBIs are created in proportion to incoming fl ux, and therefore are more obvious in those pixels that were very bright in previous images.RBIs are not created by blooming or excess charge in the pixels. RBIs cannot be “fi xed” by adjustments to clocks or voltages. however, the “ghost image” effect can be minimized by uniformly fi lling these deep traps prior to acquiring an image. Some Alta systems, suchas the U16M and U9000, include a programmable near-IR pre-fl ash system.
