THE DEATH VALLEYEMIGRANT TRAIL was ashortcut into southern Californiain the late 1840’s, but lack of waterand difficult terrain caused it to beabandoned within a few years.
THE BIDWELL-BARTELSON TRAIL wasthe route of the first emigrant party to crossthe state. That group had to abandon its wagonsin eastern Nevada and pack through to California.
THE RENOWNED PONY EXPRESS TRAIL also leftits mark on Nevada. It lasted only 18 months, from 1860 to1861, and ran between St. Joseph, Missouri and San Francisco. There were 20 original Pony Express Stations in Nevada, locatednear water and good feed areas. Most of these were used as stageand mail stops for years after the “Pony” was discontinued. HostileIndians were a constant threat to the station keepers as well as the riders.COLD SPRINGS – An interpretive wayside invites visitors to hike to nearby ruinof Cold Springs Pony express Station. A historical review is provided at the wayside.EGAN CANYON – This highway wayside sits at the intersection of the Old PonyExpress Trail and Highway 93. A historical review tells the exciting story of an ambush atEgan Canyon Pony Express Station and invites the visitor to drive to the old station andambush site. As part of the Nation’s Bicentennial Program, the Pony Express Trail has beenmarked throughout the state. Travelers along the route should watch for “XP”, the Pony Expressbrand, on wooden posts that dot the Trail across the state.
