THE BIDWELL-BARTELSON TRAIL was the route of the first emigrant party to cross the state. That group had to abandon its wagons in eastern Nevada and pack through to California. THE RENOWNED PONY EXPRESS TRAIL also left its mark on Nevada. It lasted only 18 months, from 1860 to 1861, and ran between St. Joseph, Missouri and San Francisco. There were 20 original Pony Express Stations in Nevada, located near water and good feed areas. Most of these were used as stage and mail stops for years after the “Pony” was discontinued. Hostile Indians were a constant threat to the station keepers as well as the riders. COLD SPRINGS – An interpretive wayside invites visitors to hike to nearby ruin of Cold Springs Pony express Station. A historical review is provided at the wayside. EGAN CANYON – This highway wayside sits at the intersection of the Old Pony Express Trail and Highway 93. A historical review tells the exciting story of an ambush at Egan Canyon Pony Express Station and invites the visitor to drive to the old station and ambush site. As part of the Nation’s Bicentennial Program, the Pony Express Trail has been marked throughout the state. Travelers along the route should watch for “XP”, the Pony Express brand, on wooden posts that dot the Trail across the state.
