Welcome to the 2017 Caribbean Schools Catalogue
Inside this catalogue you will find resources and books for Primary and Secondary education that have been developed for the Caribbean, alongside a wide range of useful teacher resources, all packed full of inspiring ideas to help learning.
Our publishing for CAPE® and CSEC® continues to grow. This year we are launching a range of titles that provide essential practice for the multiple choice paper (paper 1) for several subjects at CSEC® and CAPE®, plus a concise revision guide for CSEC® English A. We’re also publishing a major new edition of our Caribbean Student’s Dictionary and a brand-new Caribbean School Dictionary for students in upper primary preparing for secondary placement exams such as GSAT and SEA.

3.3 Effective speech and dialogue in stories
Learn how to:
• Punctuate speech accurately
• Use dialogue to create mood, reveal character or advance the plot
It is important that you use set out speech correctly but equally important that dialogue is included for a reason.
Correct use of speech in storiesLook at this example of dialogue from a story based on the picture on page 2.
Ray looked across the room at his daughter. She held a bunch of flowers in her hand but her face was streaked with tears.
[2] ‘I... I wanted to surprise you,[1]’[2] he said, standing on the edge of the dance-floor.
[3] ‘Surprise me? [1]’ his daughter replied, her voice trembling. [4] ‘Are you trying to be funny?’
Ray took a step into the room.
‘DON’T come near me!’ [5]
[1] punctuation related to what is being said goes inside the speech marks
[2] speech marks go around the spoken words
[3] start a new line for each ‘new’ speaker
[4] stay on same line if same speaker speaks again
[5] there’s no need to always say who is speaking if it is obvious
1 Correct the next part of the same conversation. Use the rules above to help you.
Ray hesitated, clutching the small gift in his hands. He felt ridiculous. I guess you don’t want my present then? he asked. The only thing I want from you is for you to leave Linda said, wiping away her tears. You think one present can make up for all those missing years? Ray put the present down on a nearby table. Of course not. I’m sorry I spoiled your big day. He paused for a moment, then turned and walked out.
Establishing character through dialogueDialogue should be included for a reason: to tell us more about characters or to advance the story’s plot.
2 Look again at the dialogue on page 2.
a) What did we learn about the story? (What had happened?)
b) What did we learn about Ray and his daughter? (How do they feel?)
Look at this further example which continues from the story about the girl on the motorbike in Unit 2:
‘Hey Deon. Where yuh been hidin’?’ [1]
Deon looked up, and his mouth fell open in surprise. [2]
‘Shana....we....I.....,’ [3] he stammered [4], beads of sweat breaking out on his brow. [5]
‘Yuh lost your voice? Seen a ghost? Well, maybe that’s right, cos I’m back from the dead.’
[1] Question tells us she’s been looking for him.
[2] Description between the spoken lines adds to the action and mood – Deon is shocked.
[3] Incomplete fragments convey Deon’s fear.
[4] Verb tells us precisely how he speaks
[5] Additional description confirms what we know: he is scared.
3 What does the final line of speech suggest or tell us
a) about what may or may not have happened?
b) about Shana’s status in the conversation?
Key term
status: think about who is in control in a dialogue, who has high and low status or power. You can tweak this so that the balance between characters shifts as they speak, if you want.
Revision tip
Spoken lines are often better when they are short and meaningful. Who is speaking can also be conveyed through the use of names in the speech (i.e. ‘Shana, we....I....’).

Improving your use of dialogueNow read the next two lines of dialogue from the same story. Can you see what is wrong with them?
‘I think you thought I’d be driftin’ in that boat out in the storm until a big wave came and knocked me overboard which you would have liked wouldn’t you I guess?’
‘No, you don’t understand, Shana, that wasn’t my intention, honest. I wasn’t to know the boat would start sinking with those few things I smuggled and which I meant to tell you about...’
4 Rewrite the dialogue.
• remove unnecessary words or phrases, for example shortening Shana’s speech so it is more forceful
• add detail or description between the two chunks of speech, for example describing what Shana does and how Deon reacts.
Dialect and accent
Key terms
Dialect: refers to the different vocabulary and grammar used in particular places or by specifi c groups. For example TBC
Accent: refers to pronunciation (‘Yuh’ rather than ‘You’ (pronounced ‘yoo’))
5 Generally, it’s better to hint at dialect and accent rather than write in a way that is only understood by you and your friends! For example, how has this been achieved here?
The grey-haired man in the smart suit stepped gingerly off the boat. He approached one of the fishermen.
‘Ah, my good man. Would you be so kind as to tell me the way to the hotel?’
The fisherman’s face creased into a smile.
‘Hotel? Hotel? Why, friend, there ain’t no hotel here. Yuh gotta get right back on tha’ boat. Is a hundred miles north...’
6 Write another line of dialogue for each of the two speakers above, trying to retain the same accent and dialect for each.
Apply the skills Write a dialogue that might occur in the following story.
A mother and her five-year-old child have gone shopping in the big city. However, the child wanders off, and the mother cannot find her.
You can choose to write dialogue from any stage of the story – for example:
• before the child disappears (between mother and child)
• later, when the child goes missing (between the mother and a local person, or the child and other adults).
Once you have drafted your ideas, use the checklist below to ensure that the speech is set out accurately and also advances plot and characterisation.
Remember
Feature Yes No
Speech marks around spoken words
New line each time a new person speaks
Punctuation related to what is said inside speech marks
No need to say who is speaking if it is obvious
Descriptive details – for example, what people are doing or how words are spoken – embedded in the text.
What is said tells us about character of speaker
What is said moves the story forward
Accent or dialect, if used, add characterisation (but not too exaggerated)
Punctuation is used to convey drama or mood in the dialogue more generally
Check your progress
Competent ✔ I can generally set out speech clearly and correctly.
✔ I can use dialogue to tell the reader something about the story.
Superior ✔ I set out speech correctly and appropriately to the story.
✔ I use dialogue for a range of functions: advancing the plot, revealing character, establishing mood.
