It is a pleasure to bring to you another edition of the City of Belmont Business Talk.

Innovation is one of the City’s core values which is why the City of Belmont’s Business Innovation Grants program encourages the development of new and innovative practices and production.

The City is proud to offer the local business community this program. If you have an innovative idea for your business, consider applying for a grant.

The City of Belmont offers a free shuttle bus service - BUSlink - specifically targeted for the needs of local business.

This initiative needs your support – please hop on a bus at any of the strategically located bus stops and enjoy the convenient alternative to you and your staff using your cars during your lunch hour.

BUSlink makes shopping throughout Belmont an attractive and time efficient alternative.

As a financially sustainable local government, the City recognises that effective management is one of the more important services a local government can provide for its residents, businesses, property owners and stakeholders.

Council is acutely aware that it is important to keep rate rises to a minimum and Council’s rating strategy over many years has focused on keeping rate rises moderate and in line with inflation. This year’s 1.75 per cent increase is in keeping with this approach.

The 2017-2018 Budget continues to focus on areas that our community have identified as priorities. These include road maintenance, parks and reserves, buildings, crime prevention, safety and security.

The Budget also includes significant capital works. I am confident that this Budget will ensure that the City continues to grow and be home to a diverse and harmonious community thriving from the opportunities of our unique location.

I look forward to continuing to work with our business community to achieve the many goals we have set to enhance the quality of life and the business potential in our City.

Cr Phil Marks, Mayor

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

GET ON BOARD BUSLINK: THE FREE WAY TO TRAVELDo you work in Belmont Business Park or Belmont Town Centre? Hop on board Belmont BUSlink on your next lunchtime trip to Belmont Forum.

The Belmont BUSlink is a free shuttle bus service connecting Belmont Business Park to the Belmont Forum, Belmont Town Centre and all other businesses along the way.

Time in a work day is precious, so BUSlink is ultra-convenient for you by operating every 15 minutes on weekdays between 11:30am and 2pm.

Not only does this provide stress-free transit for your lunchtime visit, it also provides an easy route for your customers to come to you along routes not serviced by existing public transport.

You shared your feedback and we listened - this new and improved service now starts earlier and runs from 11:30am to 2pm. A new bus stop has also opened on Belmont Avenue (now outside Red Dot).

While the City of Belmont is proud to offer this service in partnership with Belmont Forum, continuation of the shuttle bus will depend on whether usage increases. The City would appreciate your support in promoting the service to friends, employees and customers so that we can continue to offer this free service to our community.

For more information on the service or to obtain some hard copy flyers or posters please contact the City’s TravelSmart Officer on 9477 7163 or [email protected]

Aloft Perth General Manager Stephen Morahan said they hoped

The Springs community will make Aloft Perth hotel their own.

“A home away from home; and be proud of our contribution to the community through representing the residents of The Springs by facilitating and assisting in creating a safer, secure, social community, where residents can gather to meet friends, family, or take timeout from their busy schedules, to eat, drink and play in a vibrant social environment,” Mr Morahan said.

Aloft Perth has also signed up to the City of Belmont-run Opportunity Card loyalty program, and are currently working on a number of local offers and discounts that will be released shortly.

Aloft Hotel Perth is located at 27 Rowe Avenue, The Springs, Rivervale.

OPPORTUNITY CARD FOR BUSINESSDo you want to raise awareness of your business locally, increase your profile and encourage customer loyalty?

You can start today by joining the City of Belmont-run loyalty program, the Opportunity Card.

All residents and ratepayers in the City of Belmont are issued an Opportunity Card which provides them with special benefits only available to City of Belmont residents, such as free giveaways at Council-run events and discounts from local businesses.

The program encourages the community to shop locally by giving local businesses the opportunity to offer exclusive discounts to residents and businesses within the City.

The City of Belmont provides free promotion by showcasing your business’s offer through the Belmont Bulletin and

Belmont Business Talk, the City’s website and the City’s BeNews enewsletter.

You can choose what form your offer takes: a discount, free gift, buy one get one free or other appropriate deal. Opportunity Card holders can then redeem your offer by showing you their card at time of purchase.

There is no cost to being part of the program or to the promotion included. Why not join today? Contact the City’s Opportunity Card officer at [email protected] or 9477 7407 for more information.

MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT VIEWS BELMONT BUSINESS PARK UPGRADEFederal Minister for Employment Senator Michaelia Cash took a tour of Belmont Business Park recently to see in person the results so far of a $12 Million dollar upgrade to the area.

This Belmont Business Park Infrastructure upgrade project is jointly funded by the City of Belmont and the Federal Government through the National Stronger Regions Fund to bring more jobs and employment opportunities to the City through an improved business environment.

Belmont Business Park is in a strategic gateway location between Perth CBD, Perth Airport and industrial areas to the south, and is bounded by Great Eastern Highway, Knutsford Avenue and Belgravia Street.

Joining the tour was Federal Member for Swan Steve Irons, who along with City of Belmont Mayor Cr Phil Marks visited three Belmont Business Park proprietors including Nick Fargo from Paull & Warner Accident Repair, Ben Hall from KONE Elevators and Alvin Brodie from Bondall.

Work within the Belmont Business Park so far has concentrated around the rollout of a street parking program to increase the number of car bays to provide immediate benefit to customers within the area.

To date works have been completed in sections of Abernethy Road, Campbell Street, Robinson Avenue and Francisco Street, as well as the entire streets of Faulkner Avenue, Wynyard Street, Cowcher Place, Knutsford Avenue and Newlyn Street.

Current works include Esther Street, Fisher Street, and Barker Street with the remaining six street parking projects scheduled for completion by early 2018.

The other main component of the project is the upgrade of Belmont Avenue between Great Eastern Highway and Alexander Road which will involve the conversion of overhead power lines to underground power cables.

The work on Belmont Avenue is expected to take place in 2018 with finishing works to be undertaken in early 2019.

Sirco Regional Manager John Couttie, City of Belmont Mayor Cr Phil Marks, Member for Swan Steve Irons, Senator Michaelia Cash and Alvin Brodie from Bondall during a tour of Belmont Business Park.

BELMONT BUSINESS PARKThe City of Belmont’s Belmont Business Park located in a strategic gateway between the Perth CDB, Perth Airport and industrial areas to the south, has been undergoing a transformation from its previous industrial character to a more diverse mixed use business destination.

Today it is home to a diverse range of industries and sectors - Belmont Business Park offers excellent proximity to the Belmont Town Centre.

The Belmont Business Park – Gateway to Opportunity brand was launched by the City.

Approved businesses within the Belmont Business Park are encouraged to display the Belmont Business Park logo.

Businesses within the Belmont Business Park can contact the City to obtain copies of the logo and information packs are also available that can be sent out.

A video promoting Belmont Business Park is also available on the City’s YouTube channel.

Peter Sourivong from SBD Consulting.

City of Belmont Property and Economic Development Manager Jay Hardison recently received the Local Government Planners’ Association Most Significant Contribution to Planning Award (non-planner) 2017.

The award recognised Mr Hardison’s work in advocating the important role that town planners have in economic development matters.

The Award citation reads: “Jay has shared his knowledge and experience in achieving great outcomes for Local Government, through a collaborative working relationship between the City’s Economic Development and Planning Departments.

At a recent member’s forum, Jay has also highlighted the importance of industrial development as one of the main economic drivers in Western Australia, and how the City of Belmont has actively supported the growth of the freight and logistics industry in recognition of the importance of an ‘Inland Port’ to facilitate the efficient movement of goods for the State.”

7 STEPS TO BOOST YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCESocial media provides fantastic marketing opportunities for businesses both large and small. The various platforms allow you to build a loyal community, promote your goods and services and build your brand with both new and existing customers. But how do you start?

1. Know your audience

While you can reach many people on social media, the people you want to communicate with are those most likely to convert into customers. You know who buys from you currently – make sure to write down their characteristics so you can appeal to them on social media. Consider: age, gender, budget, location and interests.

2. Use a social media management tool

Are you flat out and don’t have time to manage your channels full-time? Use a social media tool so you can schedule posts ahead of time, monitor your platforms from one screen and delegate tasks to your team.

3. Keep the same username

To make it easy for your customers to find and identify you on social media, keep the same name from your website across all of your platforms.

4. Install follow buttons on your website

Add follow buttons to your webpages to encourage visitors to quickly and easily follow you on social media and keep up-to-date with your business. Similarly, make sure to list your website on your social media profile information.

5. Look for cross-promotional opportunities

Engage with other businesses with a similar demographic and seek out opportunities for cross-promotion. By reposting content it shows you care about your online community and as a result their audience may eventually become yours.

6. Offer exclusive content or products on social media

Give your customers a reason to follow you on social media. One way to do this is to provide exclusive content, products or discounts to your followers.

7. Be relatable

Keep it simple! When writing content remember that your audience can range from amateurs to experts. Industry jargon should be avoided if at all possible.

It’s also important to come across as a real person and not a machine. Add some warmth, personality and occasional humour to your posts and remember, it’s called ‘social’ media for a reason!

CORRIDOR PLAN FOR GREAT EASTERN HIGHWAYThe City of Belmont recently appointed Taylor Burrell Barnett as the lead consultants to prepare a Corridor Plan for Great Eastern Highway.

Given the significant issues the City is encountering with traffic, access and built design for development applications proposed along Great Eastern Highway, a Corridor Plan will explore and develop responses and policy directions relating to Great Eastern Highway.

Taylor Burrell Barnett has started work on the project and will analyse population and land-use, place making, transport and access within the corridor and its surrounding area of influence.

The City anticipates that the project will conclude during the latter half of 2019 or early 2020, with the final approval of the planning framework.
