Allusion Symbol Theme Irony An ALLUSION is an indirect reference to another idea, person, place, event, artwork, etc. used to enhance the meaning of the work in which it appears Because I was caught lying to my mother, it was going to be WW1 when I got home. The boy treated the cats like Hitler treated the Jews. She is more convincing than Eve when it comes to getting a man to do what she wants. The girl's love of sweets was her Achilles heel. Harriet Tubman was called the Moses of her time Sue did not want to endure Eve's curse, so she opted for the epidural It has rained so long, it seems as though it has rained for 40 days and nights. Water life Lion courage Skull death Clover luck Green envy Red rage Baby - innocence A theme is a broad idea, message, or lesson that is conveyed by a work. The message may be about life, society, or human nature. Basically What were you suppose to learn about your self and the world around you? Family Love Murder Violence Innocence Passion regret ITS NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT In general, irony involves a difference between appearance (what you see) and reality (what it really is). Verbal irony refers to spoken words only. Verbal irony occurs when a character says one thing, but hints or means the opposite. Basically it is the difference between what the speaker says and what he actually means. If I hate Tina and everyone knows that I hate her, but Tina does not know and I say Tina, you look beautiful today What I say is NOT what I really mean. Dramatic irony involves more than just spoken words. Dramatic irony happens when the meaning expected by a character's words or actions is opposite of the true situation. The difference is between what the character says, thinks, or does and the true situation. Further, the character cannot see or understand the difference, but the audience or reader can. For example, in Othello, dramatic irony occurs when Othello refers to Iago as honest Iago. Unknown to Othello, Iago is a villain who deceives him into thinking that Desdemona (Othellos wife) has been unfaithful. For this, Othello unjustly kills his wife, believing the whole time in Iagos honesty. When we can see the killer behind the door but the about to be unsuspecting murdered victim cannot see the murderer. An old man turned ninety-eight. He won the lottery and died the next day It's a death row pardon two minutes too late Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly. He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye. He waited his whole life to take that flight And as the plane crashed down he thought "Well isn't this nice..." An ambulance driver rushes to the scene of an accident, only to run the victim over, because the victim crawled into the middle of the street in the darkness of night. In an effort to restrict viewership of a morally offensive movie, the city council bans showing the movie in theatres. By banning the movie, the city council creates such a heightened awareness of the movie, that more people download and view pirated copies of the movie over the internet - specifically because it was banned - than would have viewed it in the theatres to begin with. In 1912 the Titanic was touted as "100% unsinkable", and yet the ship sank on its maiden voyage. In 1981, while standing next to his car, President Ronald Regan was hit in the chest by a bullet fired by John Hinkley Jr. In fact, Hinkley's bullet completely missed President Reagan, but then ricocheted off the car's bulletproof window, and struck President Reagan in the chest. This example is ironic, because the very technology that was intended to protect President Reagan contributed to his injuries.
