YOUNG STARS THE race is on to find Blackpool’s out-standing young sportsmen and women.

Nominations are now welcome forthis year’s prestigious Quayle Awards.

The Blackpool Council awards havebeen presented since 1945, founded byAlderman John Robert Quayle.

The awards are divided into two agecategories: 14-21 and nine-13, and nom-inations from all sports are equallywelcome.

In the older age group, the QuayleTrophy will be presented to the out-standing individual who has achievedregional or national success. Two ad-ditional merit awards will also be pre-sented.

The exceptional person in theyounger age group will receive theQuayle Shield, with two runners-upalso honoured.

Besides achievement, the awardsalso recognise commitment, sports-manship and support of sport withinthe community.

Blackpool Mayor, Coun Mary Smith,will present the awards at the TownHall in June.

Nomination forms, available by call-ing Blackpool Council on (01253)478008, must be submitted by the endof the month.

HOSTS Blackpool SixthForm College badmintonteam were unbeaten asthey won the Red Rosemixed doubles, beatingRunshaw College, Ley-land, in a tense final.

The line-up was SianMeakin, Beki Holditch,Michael Cross, BroganFraser, Ryan Fuce and Stu-

art Marshfield. And one ofthe school’s outstandingsportswomen Danielle Bam-ber (right) has made hermark on the national stage.

Lancashire U18s hockeycaptain has won throughnational trials to gain se-lection for the British Col-leges women’s team.

SPRING is in the air,and pupils at KirkhamPear Tree School hasadded some spring andbounce to its PE ses-sions.

The pupils are enjoyingregular sessions of re-bound therapy on theschool trampoline.

Pear Tree School Kirkhamis for pupils aged three to 19with severe learning difficul-ties, some with associatedphysical and sensory impair-ments.

The school has purchased itsown trampoline, enabling itsthree trained rebound thera-pists to run the weekly sessionson site.

Rebound provides an out-standing opportunity for all-round exercise, involvingmovement and balance, andhas become part of the cur-riculum at Kirkham Pear Tree.

AwardPE co-ordinator Paula

McKee said: “Pupils love the re-bound sessions and after only afew we have seen a remarkabledifference in their abilities.The sessions also enhance anddevelop communicationskills.”

There is an award schemeassociated with the reboundsessions, enabling all pupils toshow achievement and pro-gression.

The pupils advance througha series of colour-coded grades,receiving a certificate for each.

The school’s motto of“achieving the best we can ineverything we do” certainly ap-plies to the Rebound sessionsat Kirkham Pear Tree, whichhas received both theSports-mark and Activemark acco-lades for sport in school.

THERE are Pantherson the loose in Black-pool schools.

But there’s no need tolock the classroomdoors ... these arefriendly big cats fromthe Blackpool PanthersRL club.

Pupils from Bishpamand Collegiate Schoolsand Devonshire Prima-ry have been invited to

the first ChampionshipOne home game of theseason against HunsletsHawks on Sunday.

Pupils at the two highschools have enjoyedthree weeks of coachingwith visitors from thePanthers, led by devel-opment officer Nick Set-tle.

And 20 pupils fromDevonshire Primary

will to take part in askills session before thebig match at the club’sWoodlands home inAnsdell this weekend.

Each pupil who takespart will be given freeentry to the match withan accompanying adult.

All other Devonshirepupils can obtain dis-count vouchers for thegame from school.

LAST year’s success by Blackpool andFylde primary schools in the SPAR Lan-cashire Youth Games has continued.

Ansdell Primary School have been crownedLancashire gymastics champions in Hyndburn.

And Revoe Community Primary School have beenpresented with the Blackpool SPAR Star School of theYear Award for its active participation last year.

The Lancashire Games is the county’s biggest youthsports event of the year and Ansdell won through tothe finals by winning the Fylde tournament. Water-loo Primary represented Blackpool and ShakespearePrimary were Wyre’s representatives.

Ansdell won the overall title at Hyndburn and hadthe the two outstanding performers in the indivdualevent in Hannah Riley and Florence Meaney.

The rest of the winning team, who finished ahead ofPreston’s St Mary’s and St Andrew’s Primary andHaslingden Primary from Rossendale, were Lucy Bain-bridge, Amber Dunn, Thomas Bailey-Shields andDaniel Cooper.

The guest of honour in Hyndburn was Great BritainOlympian and Commonwealth Games gold medalwinner Craig Heap from Burnley.

Blackpool’s representatives Waterloo may not haveenjoyed the success of Ansdell but they enjoyed a greatday, meeting Craig and the other special guests.

■ Revoe were presented with a shield and £700 worthof sports equipment from Surridge Sport for theirachievements last year.

The Grasmere Road school gained the highest num-ber of points for participation in events at the Black-pool borough qualifying events last year.

HeatsThe local competitions included Year 5/6 cricket,

gymnastics, tag rugby, high-five netball and indoorathletics. Their £700 award was used towards netballand cricket kit.

Last year’s head sports girl and head sports boyShannon Greatrex and Jonathan Holt returned toRevoe for the award ceremony last Friday.

More than 2,000 school pupils from 120 schools andcolleges will contest this year’s SPAR LancashireYouth Gamess.

Qualifying heats for other events in the 2009 Gamesare taking place at venues across the borough in thenext three months.

The Lancashire Disability Youth Games will be heldat Blackpool’s Stanley Park on June 30, with an esti-mated 800 people expected to attend.

■ ANSDELL Primary also enjoyed outstanding suc-cess in the North West floor and vault championships.

They triumphed in the mixed category and will rep-resent the region in the national finals in Stoke in May.

The winning team was: Cara Townsend, Iona Flegg,Kelsey Horridge, Luke O’Sullivan, Ben Riley and SamDoyle.Ansdell also finished second in the boys’ eventand third in the girls’

FLEETWOOD always faced anuphill struggle in this Lan-cashire Cup quarter-finalagainst visitors who had al-ready beaten them heavilytwice this season.

An Ormskirk try in the open-ing five minutes was ominousbut Fleetwood rallied as KyleBedford and Keiron Teale ledthe pack effort and the excellentDanny Maher crashed over.

However, Ormskirk addedfour tries to lead 25-5 at half-time, despite fine defendingfrom Kris Phillips and TomCleary.

Matty Webster made somebone-crunching tackles andstand-off Steve Preston wentclose with a fine break beforeBedford smashed over.

More strong drives were re-warded with a Jack Foden tryand the dangerous Tom Speedadded the goal.

Ormskirk were rattled andhad a player sin-binned, thoughthey did manage to score twomore tries.

The hosts applied pressurebut Fleetwood remained 7-0 upat half-time.

The instruction to pass theball out to the backs more washeeded and Danny Todd racedaway for a great try.

Joshua Pearce converted andscored the final try, followed byChadwick’s second goal.

Blackpool FC Girls Under-10s 2Bolton Community 0BLACKPOOL took a while to adjust to their newformation but started to dominate as they gotinto their stride.

Alisha Yarwood broke the deadlock with a finesolo goal from inside her own half and doubledthe lead just before half-time.

Blackpool could not convert their chancesafter the break but emerged comfortable win-ners, with Erin Croft the player of the match.

Thornton 1YMCA Under-11 7YMCA missed some early chances before Ffion

Sagar gave them an eighth-minute lead whichwas soon doubled by Laurel North.

Thornton made it 2-1 at half-time but the two-goal margin was restored within a minute of therestart as North added a superb second.

Erin Menzies netted twice before recent sign-ing Niamh Hendry and Hannah Wright com-pleted the signing.

Fleetwood Town Under-11 2Blue Star 3FLEETWOOD entertained the cup finalists andhad to defend strongly early on before breakingout for Lucy Johnson to force a fine save.

Blue Star responded by hitting a post and it re-mained goalless at half-time, after FrancescaHearty had gone close for Fleetwood.

The visitors took the lead soon after therestart, but Demi Leigh Devereaux equalised di-rect from a corner and then gave Town the leadfrom a 20-yard lob. Fleetwood couldn’t hang onand Blue Star scored twice in the last 15 minutes.

Captain Anna Reynolds and Kelsey Harg-reaves were outstanding.

Blackpool FC Girls Under-12 4 Preston NE 2BLACKPOOL won through to the LancashireCup final after Preston went ahead midwaythrough the first half.

Resolute defending by Jess Schora and Mar-riella Hemmingway denied the visitors a secondbut then Blackpool upped the pace, with debu-tant Billy Davenport making an impact.

Levi Felton’s effort grazed the post before JessDougherty equalised five minutes before half-time. And then Alix Reid slammed the ball intothe roof of the net with the final kick of the half.

Katie Brannigan and Gabbi George threateneddown the flanks and Reid scored her secondwhen her shot bounced down off the bar and in

off the keeper. George was not so lucky – her shothitting both posts and bouncing out – beforeDougherty scored her second.

Preston pulled one back but a string of finesaves by Erin Hall ensured that was as close asthey got.

BJFFWrens Under-13 3 Rossendale 2THE Wrens beat Rossendale for the second weekrunning following their cup semi-final success ...but only just as the visitors hit back from 3-0down at half-time.

Zoe Stout and Hayley Connell went close be-fore Caris Gradwell ran the length of the pitch toscore.

Saffron Quilligan took on the defence and dou-bled the lead, while Emily Judge also went close.

SEASIDERS centre of excel-lence goalkeeping coach KyleValentine is offering a freetraining day for budding keep-ers during the Easter holidays.

Kyle, a former pro keeper withBristol Rovers, is a full qualifiedcoach who aims to run the eventfor up to 50 young keepers agedseven to 16.

He explained: “I aim to offerthe local keepers an insight intoprofessional goalkeeping, withtraining in a fun and safe envi-ronment. It is a specialised posi-tion which requires specialisedtraining.”

Venue and times are yet to befinalised, and goalkeepers areinitially asked to register theirinterest with Kyle by calling himon 07955 651551.

The hosts squandered a host of chancesbefore Josh Clayton gave them an intervallead.

YMCA remained on top and the pointswere sealed when Clayton notched his sec-ond. Sam Warburton was excellent forYMCA.

Thornton 1 Lytham 4LYTHAM quickly took the lead throughAndrew Sanderson but Thornton werelevel by half-time with a Roe strike.

Lytham took control after the restart asSanderson restored their lead with a greatstrike, then won a penalty which he scoredhimself to complete his hat-trick.

Jack Tomes coolly grabbed the fourthlate on and then saw his last-minute shotshave the post.

Jack Wood, Cameron Ray and EthanWarren impressed in the Lytham defenceand James Fletcher was superb in mid-field.

Foxhall 1 Poulton 0FOXHALL edged this very close game withan early goal, when a good cross fromJames Dowling was met with a tidy finishby Jordan Ratcliff.

Layton Juniors 2 St Annes 5FIRST-HALF goals from Trafford Brether-ton and Dan Tagger put St Annes in con-trol of this Hogan Plate tie.

Two quick Layton goals by Josh Grif-fiths and the Jamayne Rodoway made it 2-2 at half-time but St Annes hit back withthree of their own.

Top scorer Chris Pipe and Isaac Fluss-Tramontano, with two fantastic strikesfrom outside the box, were the scorers.

Luke Gill was St Annes’ man of thematch, with Nathan Price and George Kayalso outstanding, as was Layton keeperHenry Turner.

UNDER-12Blackpool Rangers 3 AFC Blackpool 3AFC won this Hogan Plate thriller onpenalties after a great fightback. Theywere 3-0 down at half-time to strikes byRimmer, Bench and an own goal, but thenhit back in style as goals from Leon Platt,Callan Roberts and Luke Schrieber forcedextra-time.

Extra-time produced chances at bothends but no more goals and AFC won theshootout 6-5. Nathan Sayers was the man ofthe match.

St Annes 4 Staining 1THIS Hogan Plate first-round tie turnedout to be a tense affair and Staining de-servedly took the lead from a corner onfive minutes, when Jay Austin’s fine crossdropped for Finn Docherty to score acracker.

St Annes hit back as Tom Bradley andHari Chan linked up well down the left,

and Jordan Tongue slid in for the equalis-er.

The ever-dangerous Bradley slotted thesecond following good work from Chanand it remained 2-1 at half-time.

St Annes could not take their chancesuntil the tireless Lewis Hodge netted thethird and a great finish from Jake Grimesettled the tie.

William Neilson, Anthony Severyn andman of the match Axel Cartmel all hadgood games playing out of position.

Jamie Boylen was solid in a fine Stain-ing effort.

BJFF Blues 0 Spirit ofYouth 6SPIRIT’S five-man midfield proved cre-ative and strong as Jac Birch and JackRichardson both went close before ShaneDelaney lobbed the keeper for the opener,his first for the club.

The excellent Richardson scored nextand Callum Willoughby headed home aDane White corner to make it 3-0 at half-time.

Reece Lancashire’s good work led to twogoals for Adam Matthews before Birch’s25-yard wonderstrike completed the scor-ing. Will Abbotts and Curtis Burke weredenied by the keeper in a fine team display.

Kirkham 5 FC Rangers 1KIRKHAM started brightly and DeclanCartwright gave them an early lead beforeJack Stainton made it 2-0 at half-time.

FC Rangers pulled one back when Gom-mersall’s fine through ball was convertedin style by Ben Campbell.

Stainton’s second and further goals fromthe head of Charlie Cottam and ElliotSmith’s shot from 18 yards completed afine performance by the leaders, whoseman of the match was Bradley Wilson.

Lytham 2 FleetwoodTown 1LYTHAM won this nailbiting game, inwhich Matt Hardman was a threat up thewings.

Home keeper Cori Ward was put to thetest twice before Ryan Robinson set upman of the match Kenzi Bailey, whose per-fect strike gave Lytham a half-time lead.

Fleetwood fought back and equalised inthe dying moments through Robinsonafter Ellis’ shot had hit the post.

As time ran out, Harry Greenwood hadan effort saved and a corner was clearedoff the line before Matt McGreehin putRyan Worthington in the clear for a victo-ry.

Leaders South Shore didn’t have agame but St Annes couldn’t capitaliseas they came out second best in the Agame, where Rangers romped to a 5-1win with goals from Daniel Holt (2),George Byrne, Ryan Walsh and JordanStimpson. Jack Carroll’s goal wasn’tenough for Rangers B, who lost 3-1.

With several games in hand on the toptwo, third-placed Poulton Youth are wellin contention for the title. Goals by Kier-an Chell, Aidan Heath and James Robin-son gave their A team a 3-0 win overThornton Cleveleys but the B game wasmuch closer. Cameron Peters got bothin the 2-1 outcome, with Jack Davies re-plying.

Lytham Junior Blues, who are justabove the relegation places, won the Agame with BJFF 1-0 thanks to JamesTravis’ goal. The B game was goalless.

Division B leaders Lytham JuniorsMaroons maintained their 100 per centrecord. Spirit mounted a late charge andO’Reilly pulled one back.

South Shore 2 St Annes 0A PENALTY save by St Annes man ofthe match Callum Binks kept it goal-less at half-time only for Shore toclinch victory with two Knight goals.

St Annes gave 100 per cent, withJoshua Lacey and Mathew Hartleylinking up well down the right.

Blackpool Rangers 2YMCA 5YMCA secured a hard-earned victo-ry against a well-organised Rangersside.

Despite twice taking the lead in thefirst half through Sean Ayrton and awell-taken Ryan Riley volley, the visi-tors conceded two headed goals byLynch and Heppenstall to changeends all square.

YMCA had the better of the secondhalf, with three more Riley goals tak-ing his tally to four.

Ryan Allan hit the bar and AlexCameron pulled off two fine second-half saves.

UNDER-15AFC Blackpool 1 WartonT 0AFC scored the only goal after barelya minute as Daryl Loy’s long ball wasmet by Brad Jordan, who expertlylobbed the keeper.

They recovered from a slow start,losing to Queen Mary school 3-0, be-fore Lizzie Whittle’s goal sealed a 1-0victory over local rivals Arnold.

Captain Whittle opened the scoringin the rematch against Queen Mary, inwhich KGS reversed the earlier score-line. Alex Fell scored a fine goal be-fore Whittle sealed victory with herthird of the tournament.

A goalless draw in their settledmatch with Arnold sealed the title,leaving KGS top of the round-robinwith seven points.
