Prayer and spirituality
Prayer is simply communication between people like you and me, and God who made us and cares for us, enjoys our company and wants a relationship with us.
Jesus came to show us what God is like and to teach us how to pray. His living, dying and rising again cleared the way for us to come into God' s presence just as we are, however we are feeling and whatever our circumstances.
The wonderful truth is that God loves us, knows us by name and always hears us when we pray.
Spirituality is to do with the way prayer affects our lives and the ways we respond to God.
The ups and downs of life can cause us to pray even without us noticing that is what we are doing: ' Help' , ' Thank you' , ' Sorry' , ' Please' . However, sometimes we feel a longing for something deeper, a feeling Saint Augustine recognised when he wrote:
' You have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you.'
Of course, we are all different. Some of us are happy to talk, others pre-
fer silence, some of us are comfortable in stillness, while others prefer to
meet with God out-of-doors. It has been said that there is no such thing
as a good pray-er, there are only people who pray.

It has been a very busy first term as a new Leadership Team for myself as Headteacher and
my Deputy, Jackie Mills. It’s been a real pleasure getting to know all the children, their
families and some community members. My plan is to reach out into the community so
that we become a real hub for the village over the coming months.
It is crucial for me that we become a forward looking school, raising academic standards
but most importantly fostering a lifelong love of learning throughout our community.
Wellbeing and positive mental health for all are the key to this success. So initially we
developed our new motto and vision that would underpin every future development at
school. 'Nurturing Hearts and Inspiring Minds'
The children decided that they would like all members of our community to have full
HEARTS. To be: Healthy in Body, Mind and Soul; Equal; Achieve beyond expected;
Respectful Risk Takers; Thankful; Safe.
Since September the staff have worked tirelessly to develop a whole new curriculum that
is enquiry focussed, creative, inspiring and inclusive. Children are enjoying rich and
exciting experiences to enhance their learning. As our new curriculum develops so do our
resources, events and trips. We are developing our training and use of Forest Schools, a
method of teaching which offers learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop
confidence through hands-on learning in a woodland or natural environment with trees.
In January 2017 the Government announced that Fenland was to be recognised as an
opportunity area and extra funding would be made available to the area. We’ve taken full
advantage of this funding by getting involved in School Improvement Projects that have
already shown a very positive impact on the children’s achievement in a very short space
of time. We now use Talk For Writing which has enabled us to develop new ways of
teaching English, we are part of a Powerful Words Project that aims to develop children’s
vocabulary and a new Maths Mastery Project that takes its inspiration from Shanghai as
world leaders in the teaching of Maths. The children love our new approaches and are
growing in confidence daily.
We have some exciting events planned this year to which we would like to invite the wider
community, so please look out for invites in future editions. And if you would like to come
and meet me or discuss anything to do with the village that we may be of assistance for
please do not hesitate. The kettle is always on and everyone is welcome!

Old Canal Towpath
Elm Parish Council have recently purchased the strip of land
running from Colletts Bridge Lane to the Pocket Park Elm in
partnership with Emneth Parish Council. This used to be part of the old canal
towpath.
The land was offered for sale by Norfolk County Council and both Parish
Councils had been approached by local residents about securing the land for the
enjoyment of Parishioners from both Parishes.
We are looking for Volunteers to assist with managing/maintaining the area. If
anyone would like to get involved to assist with this please contact the Clerk to
Elm Parish Council (details below).
We need volunteers to cut back vegetation and assist with future planting
schemes. Anyone with ideas for how the site can be enhanced for the benefit of
the Community would be welcome. If a local tractor owner could assist with
flailing the hedges this would also be much appreciated.
Work will usually be mainly carried out at weekends or summer evenings.
Initially it is planned that a meeting will be arranged at the Parish Office in Elm
for all those interested.
Many thanks
Claire Butcher, Clerk to Elm PC.
