Day 4 - Thursday 5 th September The day started with the group heading to the Summit, where we had our last lesson for the trip. Many of us went down the blue runs (hard ones) as part of the lesson, learning new techniques. Some found it more challenging than others, although everyone had a go. Just before lunch the group headed to the ‘Big D’; where we had the chance to go down a more basic slope. We returned back to the base of the Summit where we all had a quick energizing lunch. We all enjoyed our last few hours on the snow with a couple of people even progressing to dark blue and black slopes (really hard runs). We returned our equipment and leſt the slopes for the last me. Our me on the snow will be remembered forever. The night was filled with entertainment. Everyone did a red faces act that was judged by Amelia and Mel. CALLING ALL MSC FAMILIES!!!!

WE NEED YOUR BOOKS TO SUPPORT LITERACY IN REMOTE COMMUNITIES

The Student Representative Council of Maribyrnong College is joining communities and schools across Australia and organising a Great Book Swap Challenge in support of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We want to help raise awareness that in some parts of the country, there are children who do not have books in homes or ready access to books, bookshops or libraries.

87% of Indigenous children in regional and remote areas struggle to read and write

Remote Indigenous children fall well below the national literacy benchmarks

Completing Year 10 or 11 increases an Indigenous person’s prospect of employment by 40%.

A lack of education can lead to a life of poverty, hopelessness, crime and despair

There is an enormous gap in the English literacy rates of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Australia.

The gap is even wider for Indigenous people living in remote and isolated communities.

Help us help the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to raise money to provide books and programs aimed to support a lifelong love of reading. You can help if you:

Review your bookshelves for much loved (but in very good condition) books to donate to the Great Book Swap Challenge.

Leave your books in the big green bags at the front office, library or stadium.

2013 BILL TURNER CUP

Over 400 Schools recently competed in the Bill Turner Cup, making it one of the world’s largest team sport competitions. The 2013 Bill Turner Cup qualifying campaign was an extensive process. Maribyrnong College progressed from group stages held in Victoria to further rounds in Wodonga before heading to Newcastle to compete in the Finals. After being defeated 3-1 by Trinity Grammar from NSW (eventual winners) in the semi-final, Maribyrnong College ended the tournament in 4th place.

The attitude and dedication of the students in the squad was impeccable as was the way in which they conducted themselves throughout the tournament. The boys displayed leadership qualities on and off the field resulting in praise from staff, other schools and tournament organisers. Many thanks also to the parents, friends and families for their continual support throughout the tournament.

COURSE SELECTION EXPO

On Tuesday 20th August, the Senior School Course Selection Expo was held for Year 9 and 10 parents, carers and students. This is an important occasion for our students, as it is assists them in selecting the subjects that will determine their pathways into future study after school and, eventually, into their future careers. For the first time in their school lives, students moving into Years 10 and 11 have real control over the subjects they study, which is why they need to have the best advice we can provide so that they are able to choose wisely.

The Expo was held in the College Hall from 5.45pm until 8pm. Teachers from each Key Learning Area created a display, and were available to explain what the requirements were for each of the subjects taught in Year 10 and the VCE. We also had stands for Careers Counselling, American College Pathways and the Sports and Recreation Industry Program.

Our Careers Coordinator, Josie Butera arranged for tertiary institutions, both universities and TAFE colleges to have stands at the Expo, these included Melbourne University, Victoria University, RMIT and Latrobe University.

They were able to offer advice on courses students may wish to follow after finishing their school studies.

We were really pleased to see how many of our students and their families were able to attend the Expo. I know how much effort the teaching staff put into organising this event, and it is gratifying to have such a good turnout despite the weather – and it certainly was a cold and rainy night! It showed how much importance is placed on the education of our students by our parents and carers, and I am sure that everybody found the evening worthwhile. Mr Chamberlain - Curriculum Coordinator.
