We have four geotechnical engineers on staff, two of whom possess advanced degrees in soil mechanics and one with an additional degree in geologic engineering. This added specialty, combined with our in-house testing lab, provides additional levels of design and efficiency to almost any project.

Geotechnical work includes geologic and hydrogeologic evaluations, foundation investigations, and soils testing for projects ranging from private residential homes to water supply projects, bridges, multi-story commercial buildings, highway reconstruction projects, and dams. The products include overall site analysis and foundation and road design recommendations. Our geotechnical staff provides services from project inception through construction, working closely with contractors to provide field testing and recommendations for all types of soils.

In recent years, slope stability analyses and the remediation of landslides have been a particularly important focus of geotechnical study. As land development takes place on mountain hillsides, our staff has utilized increasingly sophisticated software models to assess the risk of slope movement and provide recommendations to improve safety.

This Municipal Solid Waste Compost Facility is located near the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park and is the first in the State of Montana. This compost facility will receive all the municipal solid waste from Yellowstone National Park and from the West Yellowstone/Hebgen Basin Solid Waste District (WY/HBSWD).

The facility will process the municipal solid waste into compost using in-vessel composting technology. Allied Engineering Services provided geotechnical analysis for the site, site grading, pavement and utility improvements, structural design, and construction inspection for the 19,000 square foot facility.

Phase I of the project included the preparation of technical specifications and bid documents for the equipment and process design, working with composting equipment suppliers, and organizing and managing the bidding process. Once the equipment and process design was awarded the second phase of the project required the design of the facility around the proposed equipment.

Phase II required the design and specifications for the building and foundation, site, grading, utilities and roadways based on the process proposed by the equipment supplier in Phase I. The facility site, located on a lease from the National Forest Service, has required coordination with various federal and state agencies. The second phase of the project was completed in the spring of 2003.

Allied Engineering provided comprehensive design services for the reconstruction of a 6 mile segment of US-93 for MDT. This project was part of the large-scale design effort, under the Design Management team of Skillings-Connolly, to reconstruct 56 miles of US-93 from Evaro to Polson. The project was a unique partnership between MDT, FHWA, and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and was considered a "landmark" project for this area of the country.

This project included: rural and urban roadway reconstruction, a new couplet around Arlee, reconstruction of twelve county roads, and accommodating extensive irrigation systems that cross or parallel the project. The downtown Arlee segment involved extensive landscaping, curb & gutter, decorative sidewalk, concrete intersections, decorative lighting, intersection "bulb-outs" for pedestrian safety, ADA ramps to existing buildings, and on-street parking. There were also 1.5 miles of multi-use trail design planned for south of Arlee. The Hydraulics group designed a new storm drain system for Arlee, including retention and detention ponds, and a 2,300 foot open channel outfall. AESI also provided additional surveys, traffic warrant studies, pavement design, signing & striping plans, erosion control plans, geotechnical investigation, public involvement, and final plan set production.

There were many unique and challenging design issues throughout this complex corridor. These included sensitive environmental and tribal cultural issues, architectural designs, and wildlife considerations. Allied Engineering welcomed the extensive design coordination and detailed effort a project of this magnitude requires. This project gave us solid experience with coordination efforts between MDT, Design Management Team, Project Architects, Tribal Representatives, Flathead Agency Irrigation District, MRL, Arlee Sewer District, Utility Companies, and the residents of Arlee.

Allied Engineering designed this 0.6 mile urban reconstruction project through Boulder, Montana for the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT). This project involved extensive landscaping in medians, accommodating large truck movements, decorative sidewalks, on-street parking, water line adjustments, new storm drain system, out fall and detention pond, and ADA ramps to existing buildings.

Allied also performed surveying, Right-of-Way, Geotechnical, Hydrology and Hydraulics, Traffic Studies & Evaluation, Roadway Design, Signing & Striping, and Public Involvement.

In order to resolve parking and driveway issues Allied worked with a citizen's group, business owners, schools, and residents. During the project, Allied also worked closely with the City of Boulder to resolve other design issues. Additional approved work items pushed the schedule back a couple months. However, this project was successfully completed within the approved budget.
