What are the various types of allergy

There are, broadly speaking, two types of allergies:

    1. Exogenic or External

    2. Endogenic or Internal

EXOGENIC ALLERGY is caused by any of the variousallergens mentioned earlier e.g. dust, pollution, pollens, preservatives etc. But every allergy is mistaken to beexogenic and a battery of tests like Patch test etc. areadvised and finally the patient is told to avoid scores ofthings to which he shows sensitivity, which is quiteimpossibleandimpractical.

ENDOGENIC ALLERGYis the fundamental cause of all allergies and it runs in thefamily of the patient, i.e., it is hereditary.

    WHAT IS ALLERGY

    The Concept of Allergy

Every Science has its limitations be it allopathic or homoeopathic; buthomoeopathy is very effective in skin, respiratory, digestive andmusculo-skeletal diseases because these diseases occur due to

allergy which is an altered reaction of the body. The fundamentalcause of this altered reaction is endogenic or hereditary whichweakens the bodys immune system and makes the body susceptibleto various substances or allergens. Allergy may remain dormant inthe system till the patients resistance is lowered and he comes incontact with the right type of allergen. Allergy affects almost everybody in one form or other, depending upon the hereditary and other

endogenic factors. Environmental factors predispose the body tofurther aggravation and sensitisation. These allergens areunavoidable.

Can we avoid dust, heat or sun ? Keeping the patient away from thesuspected allergens helps but for how long ? The only alternative leftis to increase the resistance of body so that even upon constantexposure to allergens the intensity, frequency and duration of allergicmanifestations is markedly reduced and this can only be done byHomoeopathy. Homoeopathy should be the first line of defence forchildren as it is the only way to achieve cure in safe and easy waysince it reinforces the bodys own defences.

    What caused allergy ?

The agentprovoking an allergic reaction is called an ALLERGEN. The listof allergens is exhaustive and can be best described by the

dictum that "Everything under the Sun including the Sunitself can act as allergen". Our body is like a 'battle field'with different allergens attacking from various directionsleading to various allergic manifestations.

    IS ALLERGY HEREDITARY?

The fundamental cause of all allergies is Endogenic allergyand it runs in the family tree of the patient. It may remain

dormant in the system till the patient's resistance is loweredand he comes in contact with the right type of allergen. Some of the commonest allergic diseases either alternate inthe patient's life, a patient suffering from Eczema inchildhood may suffer from Bronchial Asthma in adulthood.Usually there is a history of hay fever, urticaria, eczema, asthma, arthritis etc. in the family (blood relations) of thepatient.

So what is inherited is allergy, a patient may have asthmaand his one son may have eczema and the other may have atendency for recurrent sneezing.

This can be explained very lucidly with the help of thisfamily. The 1st and 2nd generation had arthritis. The 3rdgeneration did not suffer from arthritis till the age of 50years but the patient suffered from other allergic symptoms.

The 4th generation also did not have any problem till herpregnancy - now when the body resistance was low shedeveloped 'pains' all over her body.

What is really surprising is that the 5th generation i.e. herdaughter developed pain in the legs at the age of 5 years!

This shows the pre disposition of hereditary factor. Allergycan be compared to a hundred-headed monster, whichattacks various systems of the body specially

Keeping the patient away from the suspected allergen is thecure when the allergen is exogenous, but most of the timesit is not possible to first identify the allergen and secondly to

keep away from it permanently. Exposure to these allergensis like putting `fuel on the fire' i.e. the allergy.

Hence we have to increase the resistance of the body so that even though there is constant exposure tothese allergens the intensity, frequency and duration of the allergic manifestations are markedly reducedto almost negligible, i.e., WE HAVE TO INCREASE THE BODY'S RESISTANCE.

There is a universal law that Homoeopathy does not suppress, it improves the constitution of the person. It has no side effects. For example: If we take two children from the same family who are suffering fromrecurrent attacks of cough and cold and let one child be under homoeopathic treatment and the otherunder conventional treatment. What we find is that with the homoeopathic treatment there is a markedreduction in the frequency, intensity and duration of the attacks. But with the child under conventionaltreatment continuous suppression leads finally to Bronchial Asthma.

    ALLERGY TEST

Some doctors do not prefer allergy tests as they do havesome limitations like:

    Not 100% reliable.

Cannot identify each and every allergen especially air-born allergens.

Risk of severe reaction (especially scratch orintradermal test).

Tedious for patient and doctor both (especiallyelimination test).

  • 7/29/2019 Allergy 2

    9/14

Despite these limitations they can be of immense value inidentifying the allergen and to keep it away from the patient.

    ALLERGY TEST

Following are some of the common tests that doctors doperform:

    Blood test

    1. Blood test can be don Elevated white blood cell counts Level of particular antibodies Reactions with allergen extract

    2. Scratch test

Scratch test involves scratching the skin of the arm or (forvery small children) the back, then dropping liquidallergen on the scratch and to look for any reaction.

A positive reaction is reliable, but a negative reaction maynot be; that is, you may be allergic but not react.

    3. Elimination test

Elimination test are the way to determine food allergies.

    4. Intradermal test

  • 7/29/2019 Allergy 2

    10/14

In this test a small amount of allergen is injected underthe skin. This also may give false positive and falsenegative results.

    MECHANISM OF ALLERGIC RESPONSE

When an allergen enters our body, the IgE and the allergenforms a complex. This complex then binds to the mast cell.

As a result the mast cell bursts and releases histamine. Thishistamine produces the allergic symptoms such as redness, swelling, heat, itching etc.

For example, when an allergic person comes in contactwith pollen, the symptoms like inflammation of the nasalmucosa, watery discharge from the nose, sneezing etc.are produced known as Allergic Rhinitis.
