I have since been given a leer of thanks from Mr Singe, who congratulated and thanked the students for their presentaon. We are hoping now our work will be recognised in the final design with actual works to start in 2019. I think the students will agree that this was an amazing experience to be part of and the learning gained was rich and relevant. I am hoping that in years to come, they will be able to look at the play space in Port MacDonnell and feel a sense of pride and belonging in this community. Julie Murdoch

Waterfront Playspace

Last term the Year 8 Maths class were given the opportunity to be involved with Stage 2 of the Waterfront development in Port MacDonnell in conjunction with the Grant District Council. Their task was to explore a set space on the foreshore and to develop a design for a new play area that they could present to council.

The students navigated this process by using a STEM ideology/design process. The design process is a series of steps that guides students as they solve problems called solution fluency. The process is described as the 6 D’s: Define, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, Debrief.

In the Define stage, the students defined the problem and the criteria set by council. They did this by brainstorming what exists already in the area and by examining the criteria and determining possible ways to address the criteria. For example, the students listed ways to make play areas safer and also ways of making equipment available to all ages and abilities.

The students then went on to research what exists in other play areas. This is the Discover phase. They also went on two excursions; one to the foreshore to measure and explore the space and another to the Mount Gambier Rail lands. This enabled the students to really picture what the space could look like. Also in the discover stage, the students measured the area of the space and were able to calculate scale using ratio.

Next, the students tackled the Dream stage, where they drew thumbnail sketches and annotated them. This was purely a wild brainstorming time - no judgment or criteria, just an explosion of ideas!

From this, the students went to the Design part where they made decisions about what could fit into the space and what met the criteria. They redefined their ideas over a series of drawn to scale ideas on paper. They then went on to produce 1:100 scale models of their ideas.

They Delivered their work in a small oral presentation talking about the parts they thought were successful. As a group they decided what parts should be represented in their final presentation, actually removing parts of each student’s model to put together in one final model to present. Below is the model - each part is labelled to demonstrate the student’s ideas. This is part of the Debrief, as well as talking about how students would write speeches to accompany their PowerPoint .

Finally, last week in Grant District Council’s meeting room, our 11 Year 8 student’s presented their work to an esteemed audience including the CEO Mr David Singe and many others. I have since been given a letter of thanks from Mr Singe, who congratulated and thanked the students for their presentation.

Music Count Us In

2 An Enterprising Community

Safe A Life Australia Visit

Choir Festival Of Music

Allendale celebrated Music Count Us In for the first time on Wednesday 31st October. Music Count Us In is a nationwide incentive to get kids and schools from around Australia participating more in Music by singing the same song, at the same time, on the same day. Last year over 660,000 kids from more than 3000 schools participated. Our celebration involved the whole school coming out to see our Receptions to Year 6 students sing “One Song” together, as well as them dancing, playing ukuleles, glockenspiels and even recorders!

Wednesday 8th November saw Save A Life Australia visit AEAS to deliver a road

awareness program to the 9/10 class. The 50 minute session was based around the use of Australia’s first virtual reality educational driving simulator that is connected to a real car. Points covered included experience of losing a friend, perspective of the Police regarding keeping young drivers safe, consequences of not wearing seatbelts, positive driving, view from the driver’s seat – a look at how so many dangers are hard to see, inattention (particularly the use of mobile phones) and looking after your mates and how to be intelligent passengers. The session was very well received by the students. Three of them were lucky enough to drive the simulator, with everyone else able to get the drivers perspective from a screen, with carefully selected driving reasons for each scenario. “The simulator was cool and it made me think more about driving dangers”

“Lots of helpful and interesting information. I really like the four second rule”

“I learnt a lot of interesting facts about the dangers of driving and how to stay safe on the road. Overall it was a very good session and raised a lot of awareness”

“It was cool and I learnt a couple of things” The four second rule – before getting in a car spend four seconds thinking about how parents will react to seeing a police officer at their door (perhaps in the middle of night), how they would tell siblings, who else parents would need to contact before they read it on social media and how their life would change from that moment on.
