PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2011 has proven to be a very successful year for the Massey University Chapter of BAP. We
have continued to see growth in our membership base and developed strong relationships with
the broader business community. These achievements can be attributed to the success of our
events, which provide valuable opportunities for our members to develop personally and
professionally.
We greatly appreciate the contributions made by our sponsors this year. In particular we would
like to thank NZICA, ACCA, ASB, ANZ, FINSIA, Madison Recruitment, Deloitte, Ernst &
Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG and also Massey University for their continued
support. Interaction with these organisations has been greatly received by the students and we
look forward to continuing these relationships next year.
Highlights of the year for us have included our Chapter Installation Ceremony, Mock
Interview Workshop, Meet the Grads event, and the Motutapu Restoration Project.
Following a year of petitioning to be a chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, Massey University
successfully achieved the requirements to be installed as an official chapter. This is a great
achievement for the university, which joins a network of 300 universities throughout the world,
and is the third chapter to be established in the Oceania Region. Massey University will be one
of the first to introduce Beta Alpha Psi to the New Zealand business community.
The Mock Interview Workshop was a hugely successful event with over sixty students, and six
accounting and finance firms participating in practice interview sessions. The feedback students
received on their interview skills was invaluable to students looking to start their careers.
Students also made useful contacts in the firms they are interested in working for. This was
also a great event for recruiters to scout some of Massey University’s best students.
This year was the first time BAP has hosted Meet the Grads with a panel of graduates from
each of the Big Four accounting firms. This session was hugely beneficial to students who
wanted the opportunity to ask questions about career paths, firm cultures and how to secure
graduate positions.
During the year we continued to support the Motutapu Restoration Trust in their efforts to
restore the native ecosystems of Motutapu Island. The success of this project since our first
visit has been phenomenal. In June of this year the island was declared pest free, and several
bird and plant species were introduced back to the island. This year we also initiated support

for MS Auckland by participating in the annual Multiple Sclerosis Collections Day. BAP -
Massey University looks forward to continuing to support both projects again next year.
The enthusiasm of our members this year has been infallible and we congratulate them for their
achievements thus far. For those members who are graduating this year we wish them every
success in their future endeavors. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, thank you to the 2011
Executive Committee who have given their time and effort to organising BAP events. The
executive team have worked hard to provide valuable opportunities to Massey students, adding
value to their education, and we recognise this as our core purpose going forward.

FACULTY ADVISOR’S REPORT
2011 has been yet another year of learning for our budding chapter. We had several new experiences, the installation of the chapter, the attendance of our co-presidents in the Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting in Denver, USA, the organisation of a large mock interview session and an efficiently arranged meet the grad session. Between all of these, there were several other events. These events have been listed in the activities section of this annual report. On the whole, this has been a year full of achievements. Once again, much of the credit goes to a very focused, resourceful and committed executive committee. The accomplishments of an organisation are often not effective enough without the backing of its supporters. In our case these supporters are, our colleagues at Massey University, our sponsors and people and organisations who participated in our events. Among our colleagues, I would like to make a special mention of some names. These are Professor Larry Rose, our immediate past College Pro-Vice Chancellor; Professor Fawzi Laswad, the Head of School of Accountancy; Assoc Professor Russell Gregory-Allen, School of Finance and Economics; Professor Jill Hooks, School of Accountancy; Mr Fraser Bell, Marketing Manager, College of Business; and Mrs Natalie Snyders, Administrator, School of Accountancy. Our main sponsors for the year were the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Their executives Siobhan Warren (NZICA) and Alana Pellow (ACCA) need special mention for their contributions during the year. I would also like to mention the names of several other individuals and organizations for supporting our activities. I acknowledge the active participation of the following: Frank Olsson, Regional Manager New Zealand, FINSIA; Nick Tuffley, ASB Chief Economist; ANZ Bank; ASB; PricewaterhouseCoopers; Ernst and Young; KPMG and Deloitte. I would also like to state the warm reception we have been receiving from Motutapu Trust for our participation in their Motutapu Island restoration programme. Similar to 2010, we made two trips to Motutapu Island for weeding, planting and nursery work. Each time they have been very welcoming to Beta Alpha Psi members. I commend the whole executive committee of the Massey Chapter for achieving success on various fronts during the year. In particular, I would like to thank the Co-Presidents, Maria Way and Melissa Clark, for stepping into the shoes of leadership when our President-elect for 2011 had to step down for health reasons. I would also like to congratulate the 2012 executive team under the leadership of Corbin Neale, President-elect, for taking up their roles. Finally, I welcome our new Co-Faculty Advisor, Jeff Stangl, and look forward to working with him for another fruitful year. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES
CV and Interview Preparation Workshops
The beginning of summer intern and graduate recruitment in March marked the perfect time
for CV writing and interview preparation workshops. These were conducted by Massey
University Careers Advisor, Trish Fleetwood. The aim of these workshops is to equip students
with invaluable skills to kick start their careers.
Member Initiation Ceremony
This formal ceremony welcomed our new candidates, and celebrated the success of existing
candidates who have achieved full membership status. This event was attended by a large
number of staff from the School of Accountancy.
Mock Interview Workshop
This event has been hugely successful this year and last. The workshop started with a brief
presentation by Siobhan Warren (NZICA), followed by a presentation by Letisha Tan and Julie
Cressey from Madison Recruitment.
The 60 students who signed up were then allowed the opportunity to have a practice interview
with senior recruiters from Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Ernst & Young, ASB,
and ANZ. Students subsequently received feedback on their performance and attended a
networking session following the interviews. We were pleased to receive excellent feedback
from both students and recruiters.
Life as a Grad
This event hosted a panel of seven graduates representing each of the Big 4 accounting firms,
who shared their experiences as grads. It was a great opportunity for students to ask questions
about the different cultures of the firms, the recruitment process, and career paths. This event

received enthusiastic feedback from students, ensuring its place in next year’s programme of
activities.

Chapter Installation Ceremony
This event was a major achievement for the Massey University Chapter of BAP. Following a
trial year/petitioning period, Massey University successfully met the requirements to become
installed as an official chapter of this international organisation. This event was attended by
Andy Bailey (Immediate Past President of BAP International, currently on the Board of
Directors), Quentin Stoker and Cassey Budd (President and Faculty Advisor of BAP- Brigham
Young University, respectively), Professor Larry Rose (Pro-Vice Chancellor), Alana Pellow
(ACCA- sponsors of the event), and numerous Massey University faculty.
Speaker- Frank Olsson
Frank Olsson is currently the New Zealand Country Manager for FINSIA, Chairman of the
Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Swedish Consul to Auckland, and President of the Pompallier
Lawn Tennis Club. His previous experiences have seen him in many senior banking roles
including General Manager of BNZ. BAP-Massey University Chapter was pleased to host
Frank on two occasions this year speaking on the topics ‘Leadership and Success’ and
‘Motivation and Happiness’. His life and work experiences give him a unique perspective,
making him a truly enjoyable speaker.

Speaker- Nick Tuffley
Nick Tuffley is currently Chief Economist for ASB, and was formerly Senior Economist for
Westpac. His extensive knowledge of economic forecasting and analysis makes him a leader in
his field. He is regularly featured in media publications and interviews. BAP- Massey
University Chapter invited Nick to present an outlook on the local and global economy aimed
at keeping students up to date with economic trends.
Motutapu Island Restoration Project
BAP- Massey University Chapter first initiated support for this cause in 2009. We have built a
great relationship with the Motutapu Restoration Trust, which leads this large scale
conservation project, intended to restore the islands native ecosystems. Our activities include
tree planting, nursery work and weed busting.

PRESIDENT ELECT’S REPORT
The Executive Committee of 2012 aims to follow on the achievements of our departing
executives and rally around their performance for the new year.
We will continue on the imperative to actively promote and increase the presence of Beta Alpha
Psi at Massey University, by driving forward with the objectives of our chapter as clear
guidance.
Massey Beta Alpha Psi strives;
To facilitate networking amongst students and professionals, and
To develop transferable skills including communication skills, which will prove invaluable
academically, career-wise and in personal development.
We apply these directives through a range of events bridging both professional exposure and
community work. These include events which leverage our relationships with the big four
accounting firms, keynote speakers, and the restoration of Motutapu. Through these
experiences Beta Alpha Psi will challenge and extend its members, and it is that extension
which we have seen translates into internship positions for all of our executives.
Finally we look forward to our opportunity in 2012 to host the regional conference, which will
cement our position in Asia-Pacific and transpose Beta Alpha Psi’s values on our shores and
university. It will be a platform to network, learn, and define our chapter as an example of Beta
Alpha Psi applied internationally. Those incoming 2012 as a year to reach out to students,
professional firms and communities, and continue the efforts of the 2011 executive.
To conclude on behalf of our committee I would like to recognise the achievements of, and
thank our graduating member Maria Way. Her effort, organisation, and commitment set
precedence for arriving executives. As she takes up a graduate role at ANZ we wish her the
best for the future.
