Program NotesTHE NATIONAL ANTHEM arr. Pfautsch

Conducted by Jo Scurlock-Dillard, TMEA Immediate Past-President

O Clap Your Hands John Rutter (b. 1943)Psalm 47, vv. 1–7

Rutter’s tuneful, sprightly setting is typical of the joyful, uplifting compositional style that has endearedhim to choristers worldwide. His influences include early 20th-century French and English choraltraditions as well as the craftsmanship of American songwriting. As measured by the performances of hisworks, he is clearly the most successful choral composer of his generation and famed as well for therecordings of his Cambridge Singers, a group of professional singers he formed in 1981. Based in hisnative Great Britain, he appears as a guest conductor and lecturer throughout the world.

Ecco Mormorar L’Onde Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643)(Hear the Murmuring Waters)

The greatest Italian musician of the first half of the 17th century, Monteverdi made a great contribution tothe transition from Renaissance to Baroque musical styles. A master of the polyphonic madrigal, whichfeatured independent lines of equal importance interwoven in an intricate vocal texture, he also masteredthe emerging homophonic, dramatic style. Ecco Mormorar L’Onde appeared in a book of madrigalspublished in 1590, one of nine such books Monteverdi composed.

Here are the waves murmuring and the foliage quivering at the morning breeze; the shrubs, and on the tree branches the pretty birds sing softly; and the Orient smiles. Here dawn looms up and is reflected in the sea and brightens up the sky and beads the sweet ice and gilds the tall mountains. beautiful dawn, the breeze is your herald and you are herald of the breeze.

Gloria from Mass in D, op. 86 Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904)Slava from All-Night Vigil, Opus 37 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943)

The pairing of these two pieces, the first written in 1887 by Dvořák, a Czech, and the second publishedn 1915 by Rachmanioff, a Russian, reveals the influences of the musical traditions of their respectivecountries while showcasing their unique musical intellects and craftsmanship. While helping in hisfather’s butcher shop in his early years, Dvořák received musical instruction and became a skilled violaplayer. Performing, private teaching, and, ultimately, composing, eventually brought him financial stabilityand notable commissions and awards. His choral works were particularly popular in England, and whileteaching in America between 1892 and 1895 he composed the Symphony No. 9 “From the New World.”In addition to Czech folk music, his works display influences of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert,Wagner, and his close friend, Brahms. Literally and figuratively a musical giant, Rachmaninoff was aconcert pianist and prolific composer who stood 6 feet 6 inches tall with a hand span the interval of a 13th(about 12 inches) on the keyboard. His compositional style, fundamentally Russian and greatlyinfluenced by Tchaikovsky, speaks of 19th century Romanticism. His familiarity with and affection forRussian Orthodox chants strongly influenced his sacred choral compositions.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will to men.O Lord, open Thou my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim Thy praise.

Chichester Psalms Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990)I. Psalm 108, v. 2; Psalm 100II. Psalm 23; Psalm 2, vv. 1–4III. Psalm 131; Psalm 133, v. 1

Zachary Waggoner, as the boy David

Chichester Psalms was commissioned for the 1965 Southern Cathedrals’ Festival at England’sChichester Cathedral. Serene and affirmative, the work makes extensive use of word painting, beginningwith the introduction to the first movement. The dissonant intervals present in each chord sound like theclanging of bells, inviting the listener to awaken as the piece unfolds.

The first movement is in a joyous 7/4 meter that contributes to the festive mood. The second movementbegins with the Psalm of David set in a more conventional metric grouping of 4/4. The tranquil melodysung by the soloist and the women’s voices is abruptly interrupted by the low-pitched rumbling of themen’s voices singing Psalm 2. Gradually, the women’s voices are David (represented by the soloist)predominate, but the last measures refer to the interrupting section, a symbol of mankind’s constantstruggle with conflict and faith.

The third movement returns to materials used in the introduction, then breaks into a tender chorale thatsuggests the undulations of desert palms swaying in the breeze by the use of a 10/4 meter. Withoutpause, the finale again utilizes musical material from the introduction, giving unity by providing a senseof returning to the beginning. The final example of word painting is the unison note on the last syllable ofthe text, the Hebrew word yachad, which means together, or, “as one.”

Bernstein is regarded as one of the most influential figures in classical music in the last half of the 20thcentury. Conductor of the New York Philharmonic, narrator of 14 seasons of televised Young People’sConcerts and composer of West Side Story, his versatility is clearly demonstrated by his success as aconductor, composer, author, and educator.

Homeward Bound Marta Keen, arr. Mack WilbergDedicated “to our military families and their heroes,” Homeward Bound is a poignant depiction of the dailychallenges faced by soldiers deployed overseas and their anticipation of being safely homeward bound.Marta Keen, who wrote the words as well as the music, has broad experience as a music educator, professional pianist and vocalist, accompanist, writer, and composer. She is presently a school librarianand accompanist for church and community choral groups in the Las Vegas area.

Wade in de Water Traditional Spiritual, arr. Allen Koepke (b. 1939)This arrangement effectively utilizes a thick choral texture, wide range of dynamics, and relentlesslydriving rhythmic pulse to create a powerfully expressive statement. It was commissioned by the PrairieHS Choir in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a 1998 performance at Washington National Cathedral. An Iowamusic educator since 1960, Luther College graduate Allen Koepke is an active clinician, adjudicator, andcomposer.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Robert Robinson (1735–1790), arr. Mack WilbergMethodist pastor and hymnist Robert Robinson wrote this text in 1757 at the age of 22. The melody, attributed to Asahel Nettleton, is included in John Wyeth’s Repository of Sacred Music, 1813. MackWilberg conducts the Brigham Young University Concert Choir and is Associate Director of the MormonTabernacle Choir. This arrangement, often performed on the choir’s concerts and weekly broadcasts, isalso featured on two Mormon Tabernacle Choir albums.
