Francis McEvoy grew up in his family home with a variety of Irish

dogs – Irish Terriers, Kerry Blue Terriers and Irish Setters. It was with an Irish Setter that Francis and his wife Anne began their joint journey into the world of dog shows in 1971. As time passed their involvement in ‘dogs’ broadened, incorporating obedience (Francis trialed the first Irish Setter in this State to the CD title) and lure coursing with conformation showing. eir first Irish Wolfhound, Erindale Fortuna, joined the family from the UK at Christmas time in 1972, and she became their foundation bitch and the beginning of a love a air with the breed. Pioneers then in the breed in Australia, their Irish Wolfhound kennel is now recognised world-wide for the quality of their breeding program, based heavily on a series of imports from Eaglescrag, and crowned to this point with some 22 Specialty BIS wins in the breed. eir kennel prefix is Tirowen (www.tirowen.com.au).Francis is licensed to judge All Breeds at Championship level as well as Best In Show and has judged extensively across Australia and internationally at All Breeds level. He has awarded Best in Show internationally in Italy, New Zealand and the United States.Francis has judged Irish Wolfhound Specialties in Ireland, the US (New England, IWAWC and Puget Sound), in Sweden, Italy and New Zealand. He has also awarded CC’s in the breed in the UK and judged the Youth classes at the EIWC Show in Germany. In South Australia, Francis is a permanent Councillor of the prestigious Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia, which conducts the Royal Show each year - Australia’s second largest dog show! He is currently also the president of the Adelaide Kennel Club, leader of the Judges Training Panel for the Hound group and a licensed assessor of trainee judges.Francis holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and is currently Assistant Principal at one of South Australia’s leading Colleges.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE

Amy BenjaminAerie Irish Wolfhounds

Lewisville, PA. USA

I got my first Irish Wolfhound in 1973 as a companion dog, I was 12 years old. We were completely naive; we had never even purchased a dog before. We got in the car drove to the address in the ad and said Hi, is Mr. Ewing here we want to buy a Wolfhound. My family has not lived without a hound since, including many rescues. After completing college in 1981, I got my first Irish Wolfhound for showing and breeding. My husband, Doug and I, entered the show ring shortly thereafter. We then bred our first litter in 1983. We have bred many champions since then. In the ensuing 20 years we spent hours with Sam Ewing; grooming, lead breaking, showing, going over dogs, not discussing politics, traveling abroad, scheming, laughing and crying. He was our mentor, father figure and friend. We will miss him. Our philosophy is to love and enjoy our dogs. We raise healthy, well socialized puppies, & give preference to companion homes. We obsess over pedigrees and enjoy looking at and going over all dogs. Being students of the breed is important to us. We are absolutely passionate about this breed and feel an immense responsibility to keep it healthy and functional: to be both a companion and as a dog that can catch a wolf and kill it.

We belong to and participate in activities with Wolfhound and all breed clubs. We feel that it is our responsibility to contribute to the well being of the breed by being a part of all breed and specialty clubs. We are both members of the National Irish Wolfhound Club and Doug is the permanent trophy chairman. Amy had the privilege of judging the Sweepstakes at the Irish Wolfhound Club of America in 2006. We both belong to the Irish Wolfhound Association of the Delaware Val-ley where I am in my 3rd term as President and we chair the Delaware Valley Specialty. We also belong to the Chester Valley Kennel Club. For Chester Valley, Doug is on the board and Amy is the Secretary.

IWCC P. 2 IWCC P. 11

As a young girl I spent my holidays on my grandfather’s farm in Ireland where I met and fell in love with Irish Wolfhounds. In my early adulthood I bred working Basset hounds and enjoyed whipping in for the Grims and ree

Shires packs.

Not until thirty years on, after becoming a theatre sister at St Bartholomew’s Teaching Hospital in London, marrying and raising four children, did I finally, in 1969, come to have an Irish wolfhound of my own. is was Sanctuary Casbah who came from Margaret Harrison. On the advice of Ruth Jenkins she was bred to Sulhamstead Bronwen Myles, and Witchesbroom Magic was the result –the start of it all.

Having bred many champions who have done well in the UK and Europe, in Canada, America and Australia, it is, however, the influence of the lines in the success of others kennels that, in many ways, has pleased me most.

Notable Witchesbrooms have been: Ch Witchesbroom Wildrose, a group winner; Canadian and US Ch Witchesbroom Sorcerer, a group winner and top winning Irish wolfhound in the USA and, in his old age, Best of Opposite Sex at the Canadian National Specialty . Ch Roskruge Richelieu of Witchesbroom, Best of Opposite Sex at the American National Specialty; Ch Witchesbroom Wizard, an influential sire;Ch Witchesbroom Whimbrel; Ch Witchesbroom Nocent, who was both a Show and Field Champion; Ch Witchesbroom Berwyck Uther a US Specialty winner; Ch Witchesbroom Sirius, a strong influence in Sweden and Witchesbroom Himself, a star of American television.

I have been privileged to judge both nationally and internationally and served on the committee of the Irish Wolfhound Club of Great Britain.

What do I feel about the breed? Irish wolfhounds are my passion. I believe in a continuity of purpose that never changes, that is having a vision of the breed which is encapsulated in three words –size, power and grace. My attempts at always striving to improve on what I have bred has been made possible by the kindness and advice given to me by these legendary breeders-Ruth Jenkins, Florence Nagle and Susan Hudson.

My start in wolfhounds was early but only as a spectator; I have been infatuated with the breed since 10 years old. An encyclopedia with the Gelert story and a pencil drawing had me falling head over heals with a breed I had never met in person. For well over 10 years I collected and read anything I could about this amaz-ing breed.

It was 1988 before life o ered me the opportunity to bring home a hound that would a ect the balance of my life. I was very fortunate, in my first calls, to touch base with the Allwards who o ered me an exceptional bitch to show and possibly breed. is bitch was every-thing and more. She spoiled me for all future wolfhounds. I was lucky to start with such a solid bitch and everything I have today is thanks to her. Can Am CH Wolfdanes Mystic Crystal, obtained her CH’s easily despite my fumbling and learning. She was a patient teacher.

Today I am proud to say we have had hounds in the top ranking in both US and Canada. We have several BISS at sight hound specialties as well as BISS’s at IWCC, DelVal and Quebec Regional.

I attend as many Specialties as I can as the basis of continually learning. I hope to continue to share my life with this breed and o er something back for the richness they have brought to it.

I keep relatively few hounds; currently sharing our space are Aretha, Q, Crush, Gaia, Rizzo and Demi. All are members of our family along with my husband Gord and daughter Halie and her whippets Pink & Fira. I also co-own many hounds with others which bring pride and pleasure to share in their lives, accomplishments and heartaches that come with this breed.
