Dear Parents and carers,

This is our final newsletter for the year and it is within this season of Advent we pray in thanksgiving for each of our Students, Parents, Teachers, Support Staff and Pastors. Within a year of wonderful school achievements I would like to acknowledge all of our students, and on behalf of the College wish our graduating Year 10 students continued success as they transition into All Saints Senior College from next year. I thank Parents and Carers for their wholehearted support of the College throughout 2017 and acknowledge the positive partnership we share. I take this opportunity to acknowledge those staff members who will be concluding in their current roles at the end of this year. While Mr Steven Muller is to be once again congratulated on his appointment as Principal of Mackillop College, Bathurst; Ms Deborah Hurst and Ms Chris Weber have both announced their retirement and we congratulate them on their careers and contribution to our community. Following the recent semester, Ms Alpana Sandha will now officially be joining the staff at All Saints Senior College from next year; Mr Michael Dixon, Ms Susan Foxcroft and Ms Rosanne Taccone are moving on to new appointments from next year and we offer our best wishes in their continued careers. Ms Alison Weber will also be departing our College and has accepted the opportunity to undertake some significant research study from next year. We congratulate each of these staff members and trust that they leave us with many satisfied memories of having faithfully served the All Saints community during these recent years.

As I prepare to take on a new challenge and a different leadership role within the All Saints community of schools from next year, I wish to express my ongoing commitment as we continue to seek and ensure the very best of opportunities for the young people of All Saints. Mary Aikenhead once famously stated to her community that “Just because it has not been done before does not mean it should not be done now!” Such a positive and open mindset is to me precisely what we should be encouraging in our young people today.I offer my personal thanks to the members of the College Leadership Team for their hard work and collective wisdom and I strongly endorse the proven leadership of Mr Michael Hollis who will lead this College from next year.

Last week, at our annual presentation evening, it was wonderful to see many students being recognised for their achievements. It was particularly rewarding to see several students receive their All Saints Medallion. This prestigious award requires students to achieve both an academic and community service goal after they have accrued two Principal’s Gold Awards.

Previous newsletters have outlined the College Award’s process, and details are also available in the College student diary. It has been a positive process to meet with these students who have earnestly worked towards fulfilling their goals. The College is impressed by the thought and planning that has gone into these goals and the calibre of the goals these young people have achieved. We thought it would be appropriate to share some details of each Medallion recipient in the final newsletter for this year.

Congratulations to:Mufaro M(Year 10) – Mufaro conducted a research project about the untold stories of significant people in our world. She then opened an interactive exhibition for the students at All Saints to educate, enlighten and inspire. Her aim was to inspire the student body of All Saints and push them to a point of motivation, where they realise they have the potential to make change in the world.

Mufaro also regularly assisted at the College’s Breakfast Club and prepared sandwiches for St Vincent De Paul. An impressive effort Mufaro!

Kira R (Year 10) – Kira created an excellent presentation about plastic surgery in South Korea and the obsession that exists in society regarding body image and outer beauty. Kira’s engaging presentation sent a strong message about the importance of inner beauty. She presented her work to members of the Leadership and Wellbeing teams and will also share this information with other students.

Kira also liaised with “Headspace” to create a mental health initiative and had representatives from this organisation present at the College on All Saints Day. Fantastic work Kira!

Andrew M (Year 10) - Andrew created an intriguing presentation explaining the mechanics of planes and how they fly. This well researched and informative presentation was inspired by Andrew’s interest in engineering.Andrew also composed a survey on homelessness. He distributed this to many members in our All Saints Community to gain insight into people’s knowledge, opinions and possible solutions to this complex problem. Well done Andrew.

Emily D (Year 10) – Emily offered her time and was a valuable helper at Breakfast Club for the entire year. She also volunteered at the Primary Reading School Program and attended Street Retreat during the July school holidays.

Emily created three eye catching canvases based around Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’. She also composed an engaging iMovie to complement her artworks.

WellbeingAthraa D (Year 9) – Athraa generously volunteered her time on a weekend to help young children at ASCC’s Buddy Day. She also contributed to making sandwiches for St Vincent De Paul. Athraa worked diligently in the area of Mathematics and completed additional work in order to improve her grades. She succeeded and did very well in her yearly exam. Well done Athraa!

Alston A (Year 8) - Alston generously offered his time to help children with their homework at the Migrant Resource Centre, a very worthwhile undertaking. He also helped for many hours at our College Breakfast Club. In addition to this, Alston created an excellent presentation on the human eye, which was piqued by his interest in science and the human body. Well done Alston!

Ronan A (Year 8) – Ronan used his passion and talent for visual arts to create two wonderful paintings for the College. He also volunteered his time at a local nursing home.

Jessica V (Year 8) Jessica Van offered her time generously to the ASCC Breakfast Club and also contributed to making sandwiches for St Vincent De Paul. Jessica set herself a goal in the subject of English, and not only achieved this, but showed growth in other subjects as well.

Nielston L (Year 8) - Nielston volunteered his time and assisted with office duties at the Salvation Army’s Legal Advice Centre. He also created some informative instructional videos on recent topics studied in his Mathematics class.

Riddhi S(Year 7) – Riddhi created a great resource in the subject of Science. She researched lunar and solar eclipses and created a great model to present to the class to explain orbits, leap years etc. She was also a valuable helper at Breakfast Club.

Congratulations to these students. I look forward to working with many more students in 2018 to achieve their ASCC Medallion.

I wish all students, parents and friends in our All Saints community a very happy and holy Christmas. Have an enjoyable and safe holiday break.

Teaching & LearningIt is with great sadness that I write my final newsletter article for All Saints this week. The past five years has been a really exciting journey and I have been very fortunate to work with such wonderful committed teachers, support staff and leaders in our community. I would like to thank our Principal Mr Stephen Gough who has been an outstanding leader throughout my time here. A leader who, very successfully, brought together two schools and who can take a lot of the responsibility and credit for developing a culture of high expectations and no excuses; a culture that values highly positive relationships between all members of our community; a culture that respects the dignity of every member of our community and who values the opinions of others. I would like to thank Ms Rachel Sampson for her outstanding leadership, particularly in the area of Student Wellbeing. Most importantly, I would like to thank Mr Gough and Ms Sampson for their great friendship and support throughout my time at All Saints. I know Mr Gough and Ms Sampson have the All Saints community firmly placed in their hearts and I am very confident that the future of our community is in great hands under their leadership and that of the incoming Principal Mr Michael Hollis.

I would like to thank all the teachers and support staff at ASCC who I have been privileged to work with, for their support, guidance and commitment. The Patrician and Charity charisms are clearly alive in the passion and dedication of the All Saints staff who continue to provide inspiration and direction for the young people in our care.

I would like to thank the parents and carers in our community. I really appreciate the many interviews and conversations I have had with so many of you over the years. My experience truly reflects the strong partnership our school has with the home in the education of the students of All Saints. There have been many times over the past five years when I know many parents have received phone calls from me that they really did not want to receive. I am proud to say that on every occasion, we were able to address each situation, whilst always respecting the individuals involved. I sincerely thank the parents and carers of our community for the support you have consistently shown myself as well as other members of our community.

Finally I want to thank the students of All Saints who made me smile every day - at least on the inside. There has never been a day in the past five years where my face didn’t light up upon seeing the first student each morning and being greeted. The friendly nature, the sincere sense of gratitude, the resilience in tough times, the hunger to achieve and the deep sense of community spirit are the things I will always take with me in my memories of the students of All Saints. I wish each and every one of you the greatest success in life, and my one hope is that each one of you continue to develop a strong belief in your ability to make a positive difference in the world in which you live. Let Christ be your light.

Best Wishes Steve Muller

On Tuesday 21st November Dr Kurt Russell, Senior Lecturer in Rock Mechanics at the University of New South Wales visited All Saints. Dr Russell spoke to interested students about the various forms of Engineering that are offered at University. Students were given the opportunity to see how science, technology, engineering and mathematic disciplines link together, to solve real life problems.

Dr Russell also unpacked his own career pathway and spoke to students regarding the importance of selecting the correct subjects at school, to enable a smooth transition into university courses.

Following on from Dr Russell’s visit, students were given the opportunity to register and participate in STEM challenges throughout the last two weeks at school. The challenges were run in the library facilitated by Mrs Hurst and Mrs Makram. The first challenge involved students using lateral thinking in order to solve a range of challenging puzzles. The second challenge was a construction task where students were asked to use newspaper and 30 cm of tape to build a table that could support the mass of a large dictionary weighing 3kg. The students worked in pairs in order to design and construct their tables and were given 30 minutes to complete the task. I would like to commend all participants on their ingenious designs.

Looking forward to offering many more STEM opportunities to students in 2018.

“Flight Simulator” in Darling Harbour

A trip, a learning experience and an all around good time!

The excursion to the “Flight Experience” centre in Darling Harbour provided Year 10 IST with a memorable experience on being able to fly a simulated Boeing 747 aircraft.

The experience educated us with skills which aren’t commonly taught and opened up an insight into a pilot’s career. The excursion allowed us to experience the responsibility and attentiveness needed for a professional pilot.

Our day started with a taste of flying where we were able to operate an F18 Fighter Jet through a Virtual Reality set. From there we were given the opportunity to use a Boeing 747 simulator used by professional pilots for training. In the flight simulator, we were able to land an airplane through multiple scenarios of time and weather.

The overall experience from the excursion was very positive and was a trip that many will remember for many years to come.

Teaching & LearningWhat Does Newman Mean To Me?

In the quotes below, students reflect on what they have achieved this year. On behalf of the Newman Team, I would like to thank our students for their dedication, and their families for the support.

God Bless,Miss. Angela Porro (Newman Facilitator).

We learnt many things. We have been extended in the way we think about our work.

Euan B.

Newman opens up countless opportunities. It makes learning more challenging, and more hands on. I enjoyed learning in Newman.

Nicolas E

The teachers are very supportive and helpful. Newman is great…

Kal E.

In Newman, I have learnt many things that help me excel in my subjects. It also challenges me to do things that are out of my comfort zone.

Jonnah F.

In Newman, the work has been engaging and fun. I have had an amazing experience.

- Aaron M.

Being part of the Newman class was an incredible opportunity. I got the chance to write a short story which was published. I also met many new people who became my best friends. Being in the Newman class is a privilege that I am grateful to have.

Laila A.

I was able to delve deeper into different topics in Newman. I was able to gain a clearer understanding of complex ideas. So pretty much, the hard work felt like we were doing simple work! What did I like overall? The fact that I was at the same level of others. I can’t wait to see what 2018 holds for me.

Justin A.

In Newman English, I learnt plays like Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” and poetry writing, as well as techniques and the skills needed to push myself to do better in writing. In Newman Geography, I learnt about parts of the world, the details and specifications of the land we walk and reside on, as well as the different types of geographical landmarks/landforms. In Newman Science, I learnt how to use a bunsen burner, the details of a microscope, as well as the makeup of particles within certain objects. In Newman Maths, I learnt the propers for congruent triangles and shortcuts to figuring out a hard answer. Generally, I learnt that if I push myself further, I can find myself going the extra mile.

Ivana A.

In the Newman class, I have learnt how to improve my learning and studying styles. In Science, since the learning we do now is more complex, the experiments are too, which makes it interesting.

Lara C.

I really enjoy being in the Newman class. In this class, we get to learn about different topics that we haven’t learnt previously. I especially enjoy the teachers that teach us. Without those teachers, I would get bored easily! They make what we are learning not only fun, but easy to comprehend.

Seth A.

In the Newman class, I greatly enjoyed our class debates.

Kade L.

I have learnt how to write good poems, and I also enjoyed the book writing.

Joshua M.

Being in the Newman class in my first year of high school was an amazing opportunity because I got to meet new people. For example, when I worked with the primary students, and then we showed our final product to people in the Symposium.

Amy E.

The Newman class has been an amazing opportunity which I have been given this year. I have had fantastic experiences which I will cherish forever, such as writing my own short story with a talented primary student on hope, which has been published. I have learnt new things, had fun and made new friendships with all of my other talented peers. I have been able to experience new things in a different co-ed learning environment which has let me hear what other people think about the same topics. The Newman class is such a great class to be in and I would never change it for the world.

Mikayla J.

I have enjoyed the fact that we are extended and we don’t have to do too much work on content that we already know. It is a lot of fun and I have learnt many new things. I have been challenged to think more than I normally would.

Petra T.

I have had the opportunity to make new friends and open more doors for the future. Our teachers understand what we need to focus on and they help us to do our best.

Anna T.

I have enjoyed being in Newman this year. We have had amazing opportunities and made many good friendships. Being in Newman pushes me to work harder and get the best possible result.

Olivia G.

I have learnt how to improve my knowledge of writing, poetry and film studies that I have never learnt before. This year I have enjoyed working in a co-ed classroom which I have grown up with.

Darcy G.

In the Newman class so far, I have really enjoyed the activities that are catered to our learning abilities, which makes learning more interesting and fun. I have been surrounded by great teachers who understand and adapt to our capabilities. So far this year, I’ve learnt so much in what seems to be a short time.

Owen O.

As a student in the Newman class, I was able to experience a different kind of learning. We don’t spend too long on things we already know and understand. I was able to become more comfortable with our class this year, making it easy to join in discussions and extend my knowledge even further.

Jasmine N.

In my full year of participating in the Newman class, I have made many amazing memories with my newly found friendships, and learnt new things along the way in our interesting and engaging classroom environments.

Jasmine T.

Being in the Newman class is a privilege. It is a opportunity to show what you enjoy and what you are good at. Being in the Newman class is a opportunity that I have received. At first when I got the news that I was put into the Newman class, I got a little bit scared. I thought that we were going to be given many tests and extra assignments but there is nothing like that! We are always reminded to try our best and have some fun!

Riddhi S.

In the Newman class, it is pretty fun as the teachers are engaging and give us work that challenges and interests us.

John N.

In Newman we learnt about the water cycle, landforms, liveability, Julius Caesar and Shakespeare!

Allan N.

I like being in a Newman class because there are many challenges so I am never bored.

Joshua R.

I learnt how to deeply understand what we are learning and why we are learning it. What I’ve enjoyed is working with the Primary school on a book full of our short stories - illustrating and editing them. Furthermore, I also enjoyed the Newman Symposium, being able to see our final pieces of work, making towers with straws, and of course eating Oreos whilst listening to my friend’s podcast.

Nicole C.

Being in the Newman class has expanded my knowledge of different topics in English, Geography, Science and Mathematics. Being in this class has challenged me to extend myself and ask questions to further learn about the topics. The Newman class waits for all students and doesn’t move on unless every student in the class is understanding what we are learning. All of my teachers are very easy to approach for help

Teaching & LearningLibrary News

What a wonderful and exciting year it has been in 2017, from chess competitions to Mensa challenges, Makerspace designing, peer study groups , blind dates with books, knitting club, colouring meditations, Premier’s reading challenge, shared reading with the primary school students, study skills seminars , new eBook collections and student art work exhibitions. After so much hard work and fun we now need to rest and recharge our batteries for new learning and challenges in 2018.

A great way to do this is to relax with a good book and it is easier than ever to do this. All students now have a single sign in for the College and Library. If you are signed in to CEnet you are signed into the Library and have access to 1,000s of eBooks. These are easy to download to your computer using Adobe Digital Editions or to your phone or tablet using the Overdrive App. So take advantage and curl up and escape with a great story this holiday.(For more information see the help video on the Library OLIVER Home Page).

Merry Christmas from the Library Staff.

I find it difficult to believe that we are at the end of another year. 2017 has been an amazing year at All Saints and I seem to remember writing my first newsletter article as Religious Education Coordinator.

There have been so many events to write about and be grateful for. I have been humbled by my experiences in this role and I look forward to creating many liturgies, establishing innovative teaching and learning programs and most importantly encouraging students to understand the mission of the Church and the important role that they play in this process.

Thank you to the many parents for their wonderful feedback during the year. I look forward to serving this community again next year. God Bless and have a wonderful Christmas.

Archdiocesan Religion TestsRecently students of All Saints Catholic College sat for the Archdiocesan Religion tests. These are tests that are offered to Year Eight and Year Ten.The tests are 50 multiple choice questions that need to be answered in 50 minutes. Questions revolve around prayer liturgy and sacraments, Sacred scripture, Church and Community, Morality and Justice, God, religion and life. I am happy to report that students of All Saints Catholic College received outstanding results.

Year 10: 7 High Distinctions, 54 Distinctions, 108 Credits and 73 Participation Certificates.

Students received their Certificates at the recent assemblies.

Year 8 : 16 High Distinctions, 61 Distinctions, 117 Credits and 55 Participation Certificates.

This has been an outstanding achievement and I encourage younger students to be inspired by these results. I look forward to the exam and results in future years. My challenge is to the students of the future to out perform the current cohort.

Fundraising It was a privilege recently to welcome Brother Paul Taylor, representing the Delany Reachout project and Maxine Goodwin from the Sisters of Charity Outreach Project, to receive monies collected from the fundraising efforts of the students of All Saints.

I am constantly surprised at the generosity of spirit from so many students who work tirelessly to either promote or support local charities.

Both Brother Paul and Maxine were presented with a significant amount of money to give back to the many and varied communities both in the local area and afar.

I thank the All Saints Community for their compassion. Currently Year Nine students have been collecting for the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. I know that Ms Lowe will write more about this cause however the outpouring of generosity is beyond measure. The Evangelisation Group has also been collecting toys and other items that will be donated specifically to the local community. I understand that the hampers will be welcomed by many families who are in need.

Australian Catholic Youth FestivalWhat a wonderful three days it has been to celebrate with joy at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival. Students were given the opportunity to reflect, pray and discuss their faith. The All Saints contingent was a large group that led the way with early morning starts and late finishes. During the time they were accompanied by Miss McPherson, Nireeksha and Miss Scutts and also had other staff join them on the way. The final mass in The Domain was one of the most beautiful celebrations of the liturgy that I have ever seen. Led by Archbishop Anthony Fisher and accompanied by a myriad of Bishops and Priests, including our very own Father Lewi. “Those with Jesus love the light and always choose the Good News of reverence and compassion.” Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP homily of the final mass of ACYF.

ACYF 2017On the 7th- 9th December , approximately 60 students from All Saints Catholic College travelled to the Australian Catholic Youth Festival to celebrate their faith with youth from around the country. They took part in prayer, music, talks and social justice activities that allowed them to open their eyes to their faith. This gave them the opportunity to take their experience and return to home and school with a new lease on their faith. Together we ended the festival with a Mass in the Domain with all the attendees and the public. The silence , emotion and community of joining together to celebrate the Catholic faith was truly a moving experience.

I would very much like to commend the Year 9 and 10 students that attended for their impeccable behaviour and incredible spirit. We were blessed with the company of Fr Lewi and seminarian Joe Murphy during our pilgrimage which only enhanced our All Saints’ spirit throughout the festival. A very big thank you for fostering the faith of the youth at All Saints. Without the staff that assisted, this would not have been possible, so an enormous thank you to the staff who gave their time to support and supervise the students during the festival, Miss Kelly Scutts, Miss Nireeksha D’Souza (Youth Minister), Mr Daniel Silva , Miss Joanna Kasz and Mr Tivoli Vaiotu.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year !Danielle McPhersonYouth Ministry Coordinator

2017 Christmas Under the Stars at All Saints ParishOn the 2nd December, All Saints Parish celebrated its annual Christmas Carols with performances from our All Saints Primary students, Senior College students and local parish talent as well. Joanna Jones of Year 8 performed a beautiful rendition of ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel’. Her performance was especially striking to the community as she bravely sung the carol acappella. The carol singing was a perfect medium to start of the Advent season, to prepare our hearts for the physical coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in the the world. Although the night was initially faced with trials due to the rainy weather, the Christmas Carols were a success due to the skill of the two Parish Youth Ministry Coordinators, Ben Woolf and Quyn Ha. The night was truly a testament to the binding community spirit that All Saints takes pride in. Wishing you all a Merry and Holy Christmas, Nireeksha D’Souza Youth Minister

‘You Can Make Christmas Wishes Come True’Christmas for most people in Australia is an exciting and joyful time but for many families in our community it can be a period of ongoing struggle and hopelessness. For these families, the support of organisations such as St Vincent de Paul is vital in restoring hope and making wishes come true.

For the past four weeks, staff and students at All Saints Catholic College have been working hard to raise money and collect toys and food items for the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. Thank you to all the students, parents and staff members who have generously donated to the appeal. This truly was a community effort and the gifts we have put together will make a huge difference to those who receive them.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful group of Year 9 volunteers who showed a great deal of care and enthusiasm in giving their time to this appeal. The students are: Elana Aziz, Anjali Bency Job, Jean ‘Darc Eid, Rachel Espinosa, Timo Fuimaono, Mariam Gerges, Simran Gill, Cathleen Gonzales, Alofa Lima, Mark Nader, Mady Singh, Ines Tomic, Aiden Andrade, Sharlene Gamo, Janella Huelgas, Joseph Kimindiri, Remon Muhana, Kyanna Musumeci, Sarah O’Brien and Jordan Petrevski. A big thank you also to Ms Bella, Miss McPherson and Ms Nugent for their assistance.
