We dedicate our 2018 VBS to both Bryan Toler & Mike Ciszewski. As loving fathers and dedicated VBS volunteers, Bryan & Mike shared their love of God and their faith with everyone they met. Before you begin your small group activities… 1. Introduce yourself and decide as a team how you all are going to address each other.

For example, do the adults wants the youth to address them as Mr./Mrs. Or, is everyone going to be called by their first name?

2. How long you have been involved in VBS as a participant, a teen, and/or an adult volunteer?

3. Share one interesting facts about yourself.

SMALL GROUP RING BUOY ACTIVITY

PURPOSE: This activity is meant to help you get to know your VBS crew/station team and collaborate as a team to create a crew/station ring buoy.

OBJECTIVE: Use the “shipwrecked” survival plan and questions to learn more about each other, learn about your team members gifts and talents, and work together to create your TEAM RING BUOY.

FINISHED PROJECT: Use the answers from your “Shipwrecked Survival Plan” answers to create/decorate your team buoy. All team buoys will be integrated into our Shipwrecked entrance decorations for all to read and enjoy.

THE ULTIMATE SURVIVAL PLAN SHELTER-WATER-FIRE-FOOD-SAFETY

1. Stay alive. 2. Have a positive attitude. 3. Be smart, safe, and aware. 4. Care for, help, and lift those in need. 5. Find comfort & security. If you were shipwrecked on an island… • What three things would you want to have with you? • Who would you want to be shipwrecked with and why? • Who would you miss the most? • What book or music would you want if you were stranded on a deserted island? • Where is the first place you would go once rescued?

A Message in a Bottle ~Sacred Scripture in Action

While we hear Scripture read aloud at Mass, as Catholics, we are also called to read the Bible to deepen and fortify our personal relationship with God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says that: “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for

teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete,

equipped for every good work.”

Nearly 1600 years ago, St. Jerome said that “ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ.” So, as Christians, we use the Bible to help us become complete and equipped to live the lives God is calling us to and to come to know Jesus better.

SMALL GROUP SCRIPTURE ACTIVITY1. Ask a team member to read the Bible passage aloud while everyone else follows along to hear it and listen.2. Take a few minutes to reflect about the reading by addressing the following questions:

What part of this passage stands out to you most? What does this passage teach us about God; who he is or what he’s like? What does this passage teach us about ourselves? What is one lesson we should take away from this passage? What are some of the benefits of applying this verse to our lives? What are some obstacles to applying this verse to our lives? How does it connect to our VBS Shipwrecked theme?

3. Group Discussion: While team members share their responses, have another team member record key notes and ideas.

4. Together, write a ‘Message in a Bottle’ that:† Highlights your Bible story; † Explain how it encourages us to discover God’s peace and love whenever we are

lonely, worried, struggling, failing, and/or powerless; † How it helps us come to know and serve Jesus better.
