Statement of PrinciplesWe, the members of the Libertarian Party, challenge the

cult of the omnipotent state and defend the rights of the

individual.

We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole

dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in

whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not

forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in

whatever manner they choose.

Figuring Things OutMany of our questions about politics are based on preconceived notions about history, human behavior, economics and how public policy works.

Many of these assumptions are wrong.

When we don’t know history, we don’t know to ask the right questions.

When we don’t understand human behavior in relation to money, we can’t understand how the economy works. We can’t understand how to best help poor people.

When we don’t take into account the unseen effects of central planning, we aren’t prepared for all of the negative side effects.

I can’t explain libertarianism without explaining these things first.

Paradigm Shift

What is a paradigm shift? A fundamental change in underlying assumptions.

How do you have a paradigm shift? Being exposed to new information.

Most libertarians have had a paradigm shift. Examples:

Assumption: Government is meant to help people & help plan their lives.

Paradigm Shift: Realizing government executes and imprisons people, and wages war across the world. Maybe government is not good at planning or protecting my life.

Assumption: Welfare is good for poor people.

Paradigm Shift: Learning that welfare creates a fear-based disincentive to seek out fulfilling employment and a greater sense of self worth and meaning in life.

EDUCATIONAssumption: People NEED public school.

Assumption: Public school is good.

Libertarian Platform:

Education is best provided by the free market, achieving greater quality, accountability, and efficiency with more diversity of choice. Recognizing that the education of children is a parental responsibility, we would restore authority to parents to determine the education of their children, without interference from government. Parents should have control of and responsibility for all funds expended for their children’s education.

LET’S BREAK DOWN THESE ASSUMPTIONSUS public schools rank 36th out of the 79 countries that participate in the international PISA ranking.

In 1967, we ranked 11th.

(PISA - Programme for International Student Assessment)

Public School funding has increased dramatically since 1967 - maybe the US is doing it wrong.

Page 21: all of the time! Fighting for all of your freedoms,

MORE PARADIGM SHIFTSPublic schools are one of the only places that children will be forcibly imprisoned, subjected to law enforcement, inescapable bullying, and violence.

Children are literally locked up when they go to public schools.

How many school shootings have ever taken place at a private school, remote schooling, or home schooling?

What Does Public School Teach About History?Have you learned about the Holodomor? The Ukrainian Famine caused by Stalin’s starvation campaign and destruction of Ukrainian farms during the Soviet Union’s reign?

Have you learned about Armenian genocide?

Have you learned about Pol Pot’s killing fields? His campaign of killing educated people and people who wore glasses?

Have you learned about Che Guevarra’s targeting of LGBT people and his concentration camps?

Have you learned about George Bush Jr.s War on Terror and The Patriot Act?

EconomicsLibertarian Platform:

Libertarians want all members of society to have abundant opportunities to achieve economic success. A free and competitive market allocates resources in the most efficient manner. Each person has the right to offer goods and services to others on the free market. The only proper role of government in the economic realm is to protect property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide a legal framework in which voluntary trade is protected.

All efforts by government to redistribute wealth, or to control or manage trade, are improper in a free society.

Page 27: all of the time! Fighting for all of your freedoms,

PARADIGM SHIFTMinimum wage prevents companies (often small businesses) from employing people with no skills on a part time basis.

Running a large business is incredibly complex and involves decisions that most voters (who have never run a business) do not even think to consider. The average voter may not be the best person to determine what a business should or shouldn’t do.

It is impossible to predict all human behavior in economics; therefore, it is impossible to plan for every economic transaction. Ex.: hoarding toilet paper.

Page 28: all of the time! Fighting for all of your freedoms,

What Governs Economics?Spontaneous Human Action

Individuals engage in conscious actions toward chosen goals. It is impossible for central planning to account for every individual action and goal.

Value

Consumers decide the value of products. Government cannot decide value.

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is judgment decision making under uncertainty.

Criminal JusticeLibertarian Platform:

We oppose the administration of the death penalty by the state.

We favor the repeal of all laws creating “crimes” without victims, such as gambling, the use of drugs for medicinal or recreational purposes, and consensual transactions involving sexual services.

The only legitimate use of force is in defense of individual rights — life, liberty, and justly acquired property — against aggression. This right inheres in the individual, who may agree to be aided by any other individual or group. We affirm the individual right recognized by the Second Amendment to keep and bear arms

Page 30: all of the time! Fighting for all of your freedoms,

CRIMINAL JUSTICE PARADIGM SHIFTCriminally minded people are going to find access to firearms because they are comfortable breaking the law (because they are criminals).

Laws restricting firearms don’t keep forearms out of the hands of people who are determined to hurt other people.

Ex.: Chicago has one of the highest murder rates in the nation and they have strict gun control laws.

Realization: Gun control does not prevent violent crime.

FOREIGN POLICYLibertarian Platform:

American foreign policy should seek an America at peace with the world. Our foreign policy should emphasize defense against attack from abroad and enhance the likelihood of peace by avoiding foreign entanglements. We would end the current U.S. government policy of foreign intervention, including military and economic aid. We recognize the right of all people to resist tyranny and defend themselves and their rights. We condemn the use of force, and especially the use of terrorism, against the innocent, regardless of whether such acts are committed by governments or by political or revolutionary groups

How Would An All Private School System Work?HIstorically, schools were usually private, not public or compulsory.

The rise of public schools accompanied the rise of the industrial revolution and technological advances that allowed to children to attend school instead of having to work on farms (subsistence farming).

India, a place where girls struggle to receive the same level of education as boys, has seen a dramatic rise in “Budget Private Schools”. These schools are affordable, and many are geared towards low income families - not middle class families.

Private schools have less bureaucracy and less overheard. They can cost much less.

Technology And The Changing Landscape of Education

Here we are, having class online.

Many of you have friends in small school “pods”.

Some of you probably have friends who are homeschooling now.

Have you heard of “unschooling”?

There are affordable homeschool curriculums for a range of budgets, like the Ron Paul homeschool curriculum.

Self-directed learning is more fulfilling for students.

EnvironmentLibertarian Platform:

Competitive free markets and property rights stimulate the technological innovations and behavioral changes required to protect our environment and ecosystems. Private landowners and conservation groups have a vested interest in maintaining natural resources. Governments are unaccountable for damage done to our environment and have a terrible track record when it comes to environmental protection. Protecting the environment requires a clear definition and enforcement of individual rights and responsibilities regarding resources like land, water, air, and wildlife. Where damages can be proven and quantified in a court of law, restitution to the injured parties must be required
