Hidden GemsThere’s a Malaysia out there that you need to discover.

If you’ve never considered being a local tourist, this article will convince you otherwise. Because while we may be familiar with the country’s usual sights and attractions, there’s a whole Malaysia out there that remains relatively under the radar.

In celebration of these intriguing and often unique sites, we suggest you start packing, get in your car and prepare to have your curiosity aroused.

KAMPUNG PULAI, KELANTANHidden eight kilometres outside of the southern Kelantan town of Gua Musang is the tiny hamlet of Kampung Pulai. An old Hakka village settled by first generation immigrants who came to seek their fortunes and mine for gold, it’s over 600 years old, yet remains relatively unknown except to the most ardent of travellers.

Isolated from the rest of the country until 1978, now its wooden huts and houses are replaced with

brick and mortar buildings, but its charm and cultural practices remain. Taking centre stage is Shuiyuegong Temple or Water and Moon Temple, which is the oldest in the country and contains some fascinating artefacts that were transported from China nearly half a century ago. It attracts an annual parade of devotees who come to celebrate Goddess Guan Yin’s birthday with prayer and vows of vegetarianism.

To best appreciate the town, take

the bridge across Galas River and pick your way to the other side of the lake and up the stairs to Princess Hill. You’ll be rewarded with idyllic views, the type now hard to come by, and the impressive statue of the Goddess herself, which has been carved from one of many large stalagmites within this limestone outcrop.

MERAPOH CAVES, PAHANG Just shy of the Kelantan border on the edge of Pahang, Merapoh is known for two things – as the gateway into the lesser explored Sungai Relau side of Taman Negara and the access route up Gunung Tahan, Peninsular Malaysia’s highest mountain. Now it’s gaining recognition for a third attraction – its caves. Of the 400 plus scattered across the karst-rich landscape, three quarters remain unchartered and 80 or so that have been mapped out are unspoilt, lacking

lit stairways and accompanying crowds but teeming with biodiversity and rare and unique flora and fauna such as bats, snakes, spiders, scorpions, terrapins and funghi.

Bearing exotic names like Gua Harimau and Gua Kubang Rusa, the caves provide an exhilarating adventure for every level of caver, from intrepid beginner to adrenaline-junkie expert. Start with Gua Tahi Bintang, an expansive chamber whose floors and walls sparkle with crystalline mineral deposits

formed more than a million years ago. Other caves require jungle trekking to get there and may hide magnificent rock formations, underground rivers and towering waterfalls, such as the one hidden deep within Gua Padang Kawat (reached by squeezing through narrow crevices and awkward nooks and crannies).

To get to Merapoh, take it slow via the jungle train, or arrive in dramatic style via the new Lipis to Gua Musang highway; it passes wildlife corridors that connect Taman Negara and the main mountain

range and is studded with those dramatic limestone formations.

MATANG MANGROVE FOREST RESERVE, PERAKYou wouldn’t know that situated 15 kilometres outside of Taiping, in the small fishing hamlet of Kuala Sepetang, lies one of the world’s premier sustainably managed mangroves in the world. Spanning 40,000 hectares and stretching from Kuala Gula in the north of Perak to Pantai Remis in the south, Matang Mangrove Forest was gazetted a permanent forest reserve in 1908, and is sustainably managed to support the area’s two key industries: traditional charcoal making and fishing. But unbeknownst to many, it’s also a wonderful local natural attraction.

Wander the one-kilometre boardwalk that weaves through the forest’s tall skinny trees and past chalets for rent. If you’re quiet enough, you may be able to identify a myriad of bird species, butterflies, lizards, squirrels and even hear the early morning and late evening holler of gibbons. For something even more special, during the day, opt for a boat tour that sails along the Kuala Sepetang Estuary to spot white-bellied sea eagles and, if you’re lucky, the rare Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphin. Then at night, go in search of fireflies at Kampung Dew located further inland. You can also bookend your trip with a visit to the traditional charcoal kilns to see how this local resource is made, before capping off your evening with a delicious seafood meal in one of the restaurant overlooking the river as the sun sets.

PINNACLES OF MULUBefore there were skyscrapers there were the Pinnacles of Mulu. While not every Malaysian will be able to witness these curious naturally-formed limestone spires, if you’re fit, able and over 16, you must. The three day-two night journey involves a long boat ride from Gunung Mulu National Park headquarters in Kuala Litut up the Melinau River to Kuala Berar. Then, there is an eight-kilometre hike across swinging bridges and through pristine virgin rainforest before you get to your campsite. Get a good night’s rest, because you’ll need it, as the following day

is a deceptively short but ultimately grueling 2.4 kilometres climb through Melinau Gorge that involves rope work, a series of ladders, burning calves and willpower of steel.

Thankfully the higher altitude mossy forest with its orchids, pitcher plants and chattering shrews provides a welcome distraction from the treacherous and often slippery rock and tree root trail. After a sweaty four to five hour slog, you’ll emerge halfway up Gunung Api and Gunung Benarat, 1,200 metres above your starting point with the spectacular sight of Mulu’s razor sharp serrations protruding some 50 metres above the forest canopy. Pair your climb with a detour to the many nearby caves such as the Wind and Clearwater Cave system and Lang and Deer Caves; the latter at two kilometres holds the record for the world’s longest cave. VEGETARIAN BURGERS BY KILLER GOURMET BURGERS (KGB)Go meatless on Mondays and head to KGB for their sumptuous vegetarian burgers. The Sunshine Bella is a winner, comprising sautéed Portobello mushrooms, a runny sunny-side up egg and herbed ranch dressing served between fluffy burger buns. Another one to look out for is the Portobello Bomb – a double serving of Portobello mushrooms stuffed with three cheeses and their own Shack sauce. Chloe’s Earth Burger is also an interesting addition to the menu with guacamole, chipotle mayo and sweet potato crisps served in a blackbean and pistachio bun.

WHITE PEARL BY ASHLEY’S BY LIVING FOODWhile it sure helps, you don’t actually have to give up meat to eat healthily. At Ashley’s, the emphasis is on healthy food, good quality, and being free of preservatives, artificial colouring and MSG; even the beef is grass-fed and organic. On the menu here (that caters to gluten and dairy free, vegetarian, vegan and raw vegan diets) is the crowd favourite White Pearl – a gorgeous concoction of Chef Em’s Japanese Passion sauce, quinoa, avocado, shredded vegetables, mango and a variety of seafood topped with nori flakes. EGGS BENEDICT BY REPLACEMENT CAFÉThis café’s highly raved about Friendly Eggs Benedict does not disappoint. The dish is made up of two fluffy English muffins beneath buttery spinach, slivers of smoked salmon, sautéed Portobello mushrooms and teardrop-shaped poached eggs done to creamy perfection, and just the right amount of hollandaise sauce. It may not sound like the healthiest dish, but the abundance of fresh salad leaves that accompany the eggs provides that healthy balance. Beef pastrami and turkey ham are available as worthy substitutes for the smoked salmon, but why have it any other way but the original!

Describe your eating habits.I believe in being present and engaged in the act of eating by being free from distraction and eating in moderation. Moderation here means portion control and the variety of food that we eat.

What are your New Year’s resolutions? I’d like to continue to be present and increase my awareness about what I’m putting in my body by cutting down processed food, especially processed sugar. Planning ahead would be great too, so I don’t give myself an excuse to eat unhealthy. And part of planning ahead would involve me doing meal prep in advance and stocking up with healthy food options in the fridge/cabinet. I’d definitely want eat more home-cooked meals too!

What are the new food trends? Farm-to-table or farm-to-fork. People are more conscious about the food they consume and where it comes from. They know they are getting the best produce from the local farm where flavour, freshness and nutrition are the key selling points. Another food trend I have noticed is that plant-based proteins are gaining more popularity, especially for people seeking alternatives to dairy and animal protein. This category of protein provides the essential nine amino acids that the body requires and is easily available from sources like chickpeas, beans, tempeh and such.

POKÉ BOWL BY PAPERFISHOriginating from Hawaii, the poké bowl (pronounced ‘POH-keh’) starts with a base of either rice, salad leaves or quinoa. Next comes the main highlight – cubed raw salmon or tuna (sometimes this is replaced with cooked shrimp or avocado). There’s a selection of sides to add to the meal’s nutritional value, such as tomatoes, corn, edamame and zuchinni, and the dish is finished with your choice of toppings that include scallions, seaweed flakes, ebiko, sesame seeds and more.

LINDY HOP This fast-paced dance is an exciting mix of jazz, swing and tap. Originating in 1920s Harlem, New York, the Lindy Hop has mixed roots in European and African dance cultures and requires close coordination with a partner throughout the routine. Even so, it’s great for people with little-to-no dance experience and includes fast spins, jumps and fairly simple steps; the dance sometimes incorporates ‘air steps’ (where at any one point one partner’s legs are in the air). The Lindy Hop can help tone calf muscles while burning those extra calories quickly in a fun way with a partner.

LIONEL TANCo-founder

Lindy KL Dance Studio

What are the benefits of Lindy Hop?Aside from cardio, it’s a cure for daily stress and anxiety. It’s such a happy dance; I’ve never seen a face on the dance floor that’s not smiling. I’ve heard stories about how this dance has helped people overcome depression, get off medication, and have a better outlook in life. Maybe the elevated heart rate due to having a cute guy or girl in your arms also helps.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about Lindy Hop?I often hear people say “I have two left feet” or “I can’t dance”, but I couldn’t dance either when I started. We don’t expect you to know anything before starting. Just show up!

Any quick tips on improving your dance style in a short time?Firstly, go dancing! Find a social event and just go. There’s no better way to relieve the stresses of your week than to sweat a little and get your heart pumping. Secondly, focus on just one or two things you would like to work on. Write it down or keep it in mind, and work on it as you’re dancing. That’s one of the quickest ways I know how to improve in a short time, both for beginners and intermediates.

To whom would you recommend this dance? I’d recommend it to people who haven’t experienced any other type of dancing before because it’s unlike any other dance style out there, and sometimes it’s best to have no experience. Age is also not a limitation for this dance; when Frankie Manning revived the Lindy Hop in the modern world in 1986, he was 71 years old!

What do you think makes Lindy Hop unique? There’s something about dressing up and going out dancing that’s lost in our society today. It’s both making the effort to look well put together and placing your best foot forward. It gives you the confidence and self-satisfaction that you’ve thought about it and made the effort.

INLINE SKATINGIt’s not surprising that inline skating can improve one’s balance and coordination tremendously. Besides being a great form of cardio and aerobic exercise, inline skating builds up the hip and thigh muscles while burning at least 200 to 300 calories in just 30 minutes of steady activity. The fluid movements of skating ensure that the knees, back and ankles are protected from the sudden jerking movements typically associated with running. So strap on some safety gear and start out slow – it’s more fun than you expect!

FENCING This prestigious sport never fails to wow spectators, but more importantly, it boasts some first-rate fitness benefits. Fencing engages a range of muscles from the feet and the lower legs up to the arms, shoulders and neck, and enhances flexibility, upper body strength and coordination. Plus, to perform the sport accurately, a certain level of mental discipline is required, which heightens the brain’s function making fencing a workout for the mind as well. It’s a great sport for kids and adults who don’t mind the discipline and patience it requires.

Ola Bola, the 2016 movie based on Malaysian football directed by Chiu Keng Guan, is set to hit the stage in February 2018. Ola Bola The Musical, like its celluloid screen predecessor, will embark on a story-telling adventure inspired by the glories of the Malaysian national football team that entered the 1980

Summer Olympics.Come February 8, Ola Bola The Musical takes centrestage amidst great expectations

and its musical director Datin Tiara Jacquelina – founder and president of Enfiniti (M) Sdn. Bhd. (the production house behind Ola Bola The Musical) – is one from whom we can expect a show that’s nothing less than amazing.

“My vision for Enfiniti is to tell Asian stories through spectacular memorable experiences,” says Datin Tiara. “There is always a slant towards Asian content. That’s what our strength is and there are a lot of stories that are untapped and unique, and should be told to the world.”

Enfiniti has announced Muhd Luqman Hafidz, Lim Jian Wen, Brian Chan, Abimanyu Masilamani, Kai Chalmers and rapper lyricist Altimet as part of the leading cast for the upcoming musical. Joining the already star-studded cast are Iedil Putra as Rahman and Melissa Ong as Chow Mei Ling. The ensemble cast includes dancer-actress Emma Tosh and winner of Miss World Malaysia 2015, Brynn Zalina Lovett, alongside award-winning street dance crews Giller Battle Crew consisting of three illustrious B-boy brothers from Sabah – Khenobu, Weskarnain and “Juicy” Mohd Yasin – and renowned champion hip-hop dancers Budak Joget, led by Ola Bola The Musical’s Assistant Choreographer Fuzz Wayne.

Like everyone who watched the movie and was moved by it, Datin Tiara felt no different. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it all night,” she shares. “I kept playing scenes in my head as musical scenes, and I’d catch myself saying ‘Ah, there’s a song moment’ or visualising scenes performed as a dance. After watching it for the second time in the cinema, I was convinced Ola Bola had the right ingredients for a great musical.”

Ola Bola En Route To The Perfect PitchDirector Datin Tiara Jacquelina waxes lyrical over her upcoming production Ola Bola the Musical.

ARTISTRY

As the project was going to be based on football, Datin Tiara as the director had to have some knowledge on how the sport is played. “I wouldn’t say I am the most ardent football fan, but I follow the World Cup fairly religiously and the Olympic football as well,” she divulges. “I really enjoy watching football and I enjoy any kind of sports where I see amazing human feats and when a sportsman performs at the top of his game. I enjoy Usain Bolt for being a super human almost because of the work he puts into his athletic training. I also enjoy watching Roger Federer. I love seeing a human being perform at a spectacular level.”

“To me, football is similar. I love watching players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for their football skills. I could rewind and watch them again and again. It’s something about people like them that makes me wonder what it takes for a person to perform at that level of his game.”

Watching Ola Bola the movie did push Datin Tiara to become more aware of football in our country and motivated her to watch more live matches. “Since I decided to do the musical, I have gone to watch a lot of local matches,” she says intently. “I have watched friendly football matches, inter-school football finals, and I even went to watch the FA Cup. I also flew to Australia to watch Argentina and Lionel Messi playing against Australia to get a feel of the excitement of a live football game and to understand the game better.”

As opening night looms closer, there is much to be done. According to Datin Tiara, most departments have been working in isolation; for instance, choreographer Aswan and movement director Stephen Rahman Hughes have been working with the cast to design the movement and dances to be performed on stage, while music director Duan has been working with the cast on all the solo and ensemble songs and piecing everything together and rehearsing with the band in a recording studio. But now, everything has to be brought together. And Datin Tiara herself is not one to shy away from hard work and late nights at rehearsals.

“I have been doing scene work with the cast, working on characterisation and working them as actors,” she explains. “In between we would run scenes, songs and dance and movement sequences together. All the sets and costumes are also being put together right now.”

Projection mapping and other images that will be projected on LED scenes in the background is another area that takes a considerable amount of Datin Tiara’s time. “Right now everything needs to be timed to precision because it involves projection mapping. In musicals, everything is down to split second precision which is what is exciting about putting up a live show. It’s probably the most stressful part of the whole process. When it all comes together on opening night, it will be magical and worth all the angst and stress we are going through right now.”

As a director, Datin Tiara is there to ensure audiences will get the chance to relive and experience again one of the most inspirational Malaysian stories ever live on stage. “It’s not easy to come across such a naturally compelling and inspiring story with a strong emotional message. It’s a reflection of the multi-racial Malaysia some of us were fortunate to grow up in.”

Catch this truly Malaysian experience Ola Bola The Musical from 8 February to 11 March 2018 at Panggung Sari, Istana Budaya, Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. Show times are 8.00 pm and 2.00 pm matinee on weekends. For more information and full ticketing details, visit the website at www.olabolamusical.com.

Malaysian designer Cassey Gan shares how her passion for fashion drives her creativity. For The Love Of Fashion

Cassey Gan had set her sights on a life as a Chemical Engineer. After completing her Bachelor of Engineering (Hons): Chemical in Melbourne, she chose to follow her heart and pursue her passion for fashion. After four years of studying in London, she graduated with a BA First Class Honours in Fashion Design & Technology: Womens Wear from the London College of Fashion in 2012. The London College of Fashion featured her graduate collection as one of 25 collections for its external press show. She was one of 34 graduates from the UK to be talent spotted and featured in Vogue Italia for their global edition of “Discovering fashion’s future generation of talents”. We discover how her passion drives her creative streak:

What sparked your interest in fashion? Before I pursued a degree in fashion design, I worked for a fashion magazine. During my time there, I was constantly surrounded by beautiful clothes and found myself always intrigued by the crafts of clothes making. As I learn more about fashion, I find that it is more than just beautiful clothes. Fashion encompasses art, politics, culture, social issues and more — and that I find rather fascinating. How has your work evolved since you began your own label? When I started my label, I had a rail of eight dresses. As time passed, the collection grew into a range of garments. We now have womenswear, menswear, kidswear and a small range of bespoke bags. In terms of design, I think when I

WHAT IS CASSEY GAN LISTENING TO NOW:

Jacky Cheung“I’m listening to his greatest

hits mix on Spotify. I find it very nostalgic; it brings back a lot of memories, which is always

helpful when I design.”

Jay Chou“While I was studying overseas, I listened to his Fantasy album a lot. I like his old songs and when I listen to them now,

memories come flashing back. I like that feeling of nostalgia.”

Broken Fences“I’m listening to Broken Fences a lot lately because I find that it calms me down when I work.”

first started, they were a lot ‘safer’. As the brand developed, the designs become much more experimental but wearable nonetheless. Are there any types of clothing you avoid wearing? I don’t wear anything tight fitting simply because I don’t feel comfortable in them. Comfort is key, as with comfort comes confidence. How do influences from Malaysia find their way to your work?I like the multi-cultural aspect of Malaysia and that we get to meet people from different races and religions on a daily basis. That in itself is enriching because we constantly learn about our differences. All these differences inherently come through in the overall aesthetics of my designs. For example, my silhouettes are largely inspired by the baju kurung, however my prints and colours are more Oriental. What are you drawn to at the moment and how does it feed into your work?Presently, I’m extremely fascinated by the works of Maria Svarbova; they are my main point of study for a new collection I’m working on. I like the tension between real versus fake in her work, which translates very much to how the young generation nowadays ‘struggle’ with perhaps an online versus offline persona. What is the biggest lesson you have learned since you started your label? There is nothing wrong in growing a brand slowly and organically. Building a brand is a long-term commitment and a marathon; one should never expect overnight success.

The Accord 2.4 VTi-L Advance, which just received a safety technology update, has joined the CR-V in becoming the second model equipped with Honda SENSINGTM in Malaysia. The existing Accord model

had already gained favourable accolades for its top-in-class features when it launched in September 2016. With the addition of Honda SENSINGTM suite of next-generation advanced technologies, the Accord aims to redefine its segment and continue to dominate.

Honda SENSINGTM helps drivers on the road by alerting and mitigating signs of danger that it picks up from around the car via a millimetre wave radar and monocular camera. It includes Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

A quick test drive by paultan.org revealed all its assistive capabilities. “When you go on the highway, it makes your driving a lot more relaxed and things like autonomous braking can save you from minor accidents.” That said, as a driver-assistive feature, you should still stay alert and keep your

eyes peeled for potential risks when you are on the road. The pairing of the Honda SENSINGTM to its powerful

and highly efficient Earth Dream TechnologyTM 2.4 litre DOHC 4-cylinder engine makes a perfect combination for ensuring your daily drive is both exhilarating and safe. The ride quality remains as comfortable as ever, with good high-speed stability and outstanding cabin quietness. As elegance personified, the upgraded Accord 2.4 VTi-L Advance still carries the same premium features such as leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and 7-inch Advanced Display Audio with i-MID Integrated Display.

At the same time, the Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, Honda LaneWatch and 8-Way Driver and 4-Way Passenger Seats are now available as standard features across the variants, on top of other facelift upgrades like Auto Dim Rearview Mirror, Auto Wiper and six airbags. The new 2.0 VTi-L and 2.4 VTi-L Advance are now priced at RM149,350 and RM169,800 on the road, without insurance. The Civic Type R high performance hatchback continues to represent dynamic purity.

COVER STORY

The world’s fastest front-wheel drive production car to ever finish the merciless Nürburgring circuit in Germany is finally here! Having broken its own outstanding lap record and creating a new one at 7

minutes and 43.8 seconds, Honda’s racing badge of honour proves that is not an ordinary fast car.

Designed to express the trinity of speed, handling and comfort, the latest generation of Civic Type R can produce a high output of 310 PS with peak torque of 400 Nm from its 2.0L VTEC Turbocharged engine. The powertrain pushes acceleration from zero to hundred in just 5.8 seconds, all made possible thanks to optimised engine control and a lighter, more rigid body.

The All-New Civic Type R has stiffer chassis and improved aerodynamics with best-in-class balance between lift and drag, which makes it great for a stable, high speed handling with minimum torque steer. Every component is in perfect balance. Even its rear wing is maximised for downforce with minimal air resistance. At a glance, the exterior of the car is every inch an assertive racing legend that is without a doubt, supported by a complete safety package inside.

The Type R comes with three driving modes, designed to allow drivers to take the car from track to street without sacrificing on neither comfort nor performance. The +R, SPORT and COMFORT modes optimally control device settings such as Adaptive Damper System (ADS), Drive-by-Wire throttle (DBW), Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), traction and brake system.

“The FK8 fires up in the default Sport Mode, and its compliant ride on the uneven stones is truly impressive, given the trend and its 30-series tyres. No choppy high speed ride too, and we didn’t even have to put it in Comfort,” as reviewed on paultan.org.

The fun experience in manoeuvring the car is echoed by Carlist.my after a test drive around the Lausitzring Circuit in Germany: “The 6-speed manual transmission turned out to be an absolute delight of a gearbox with its short and precise throws. The Type R remains a devastating track weapon. This is truly a car that can serve track duty and then be driven home in decent comfort after the fun is over.”

The All-New Civic Type R, a direct import from United Kingdom, is priced at RM320,000 (excluding insurance) and comes with 5 years warranty with unlimited mileage.

The DrivingForces of

Honda Pride Get behind the scenes with Honda’s Service Advisors and

discover the true grit behind their smiles.

While we trust that you love your car as much as we do, there is only so much you can do on your own to keep it running optimally. That is why, at Honda Malaysia, we do our best to make it convenient to take care of the car you love.

Not only do you get a 5-Year Warranty with Unlimited Mileage when you purchase any Honda, we also offer wallet-friendly discounts for Honda parts on top of free labour service. Plus, our friendly Service Advisors are always ready to ensure that you receive a comfortable service experience and that your Honda gets a thorough health check.

We went behind-the-scenes to speak with several of Honda’s top performing Service Advisors to find if the job goes beyond just having a genuine smile and a friendly greeting.

“Being friendly is part of the job but every customer is different so you need to pay attention when they bring their cars to you. I love interacting with customers and I try to attend to them to the best of my ability. The key is to follow up and provide prompt updates to keep them engaged,” explains Aiman, 23, of Syarikat Tan Eng Ann, Terengganu.

Tan Hui Yen, 25, of K.M. Lim in Johor Bahru, remarks that a Service Advisor must practice courage

and sensitivity when dealing with customers. “To be honest, I enjoy the challenge of facing a frustrated customer and helping them resolve their issues. Maybe I am better equipped to understand them after spending six years as a Honda Customer Service Executive but it is only after becoming a Service Advisor that I really feel the joy of helping customers overcome any dissatisfaction.”

For someone who has been on the job for less than year, Chai Song Yee, 21 of Sumber Auto in Selangor, have scored remarkably well in meeting customers’ satisfaction. What’s his secret to success? “Smile and stay calm,” he says. “You will feel better and that will make customers feel better too. I also make an effort to improve my knowledge on Honda parts in order to respond to customers’ questions professionally.”

For Lam Cheong Hoong, 35, of Peringgit Sri Motor in Kuala Lumpur, good teamwork and strong customer relationships nurtured over years are perks of the job that he finds hard to trade. With 10 years of experience, Lam says that having returning customers is a great motivation to go to work. “My tip to others in a similar

role is to always listen to understand your customers first. Learn how to ask the right questions and guide customers to reveal any issues they encounter. This will in turn help the technicians with their job,” he claims.

Lam’s advise is echoed by Selembarasan Silbarajan, 23, of Tian Siang Auto Tanjung Malim, who says, “It helps that there is a smooth system in place by Honda so you just have to adhere strictly and follow up. The unseen part of the job is really in learning to fulfil customers’ needs by focusing and listening carefully. We meet all types of customers daily and it is important that we are respectful and sensible in our interactions.”

Other Service Advisors who have excelled in their job not only gained positive feedback from customers but also friendships. For Zarina Bt Aris, 37, of K.M. Lim Motor in Batu Pahat, her customers are now her friends. “I am lucky to have many customers who feel like family to me. Although I get invited to their gatherings and weddings, it is important to serve all customers professionally and with honesty. There is still room for improvement but I hope I have been a good role model to others,” she says.
