All My Love Uncovered! The secret romance of two of Australia’s most famous faces.

For decades, Australians have fleetingly looked at the face of two literary giants when handing over a ten dollar note… never realising that Henry Lawson and Mary Gilmore, “the faces on the money” had shared a love that was kept hidden from the public.

Details of the romance did not come to light until writer, Anne Brooksbank, while researching a biography of Dame Mary Gilmore, uncovered actual letters between the two which revealed for the first time, the extraordinary relationship and the dramatic betrayal that emerged.

All My Love is a play that uses actual excerpts from the surviving letter s and so the audience discovers this story, in the actual words, from two of the greatest names in Australian literature.

Respected actor, Dion Mills, who featured in the Foxtel series Conspiracy 365 and the film Killer Elite, brings Henry Lawson to the stage. Kim Denman, from Neighbours, Blue Heelers and Romper Stomper, plays Mary Gilmore. Kim said: “Mary was a trail blazer, an important literary and political figure who dedicated her life to fighting against injustice and inequality.”

From Dion: “Lawson was such a famous and complex man. Funny, brilliant, a larrikin but very troubled. It is a rare privilege to be able to speak his actual words when telling this true story. While many of us grew up reading his works like “The Loaded Dog” and his other incredible stories of the bush, few have seen the romantic side of this Aussie bloke.”

Producer Christine Harris has been touring high profile shows across Victoria for over two decades, says this production brings to life a famous yet forgotten woman. Christine said: “I guarantee, after seeing All My Love, you will never look at a ten dollar note the same way again!” “Mary is a celebrated writer and led campaigns for women’s right to vote, establishing pensions and for aboriginal rights.”

Already Denman and Mills have received rave reviews for their performance in this

production. Don’t miss it - Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall - Wednesday, 21st March at 8 pm.

Book now - gotix.com.au or 5434 6100.

Air News

Miss Joyce Glass had the unique experience of journeying from Pyramid to the Kerang show last Wednesday by aeroplane. When above the showground the air pilot signalised their arrival by looping the loop, which provided an added thrill for the fearless young passenger.

Messrs Geoff Manley (Mincha) and Reg Hodges (Pyramid) are well on the way to securing a air pilot's license. Their exercises in the air during the past three weeks (under Capt. Roberts' tuition) have given township residents a good deal of interesting, exciting, and gratuitous, entertainment.

November 25 1931

Local Airmen

After intensive tuition under the capable guidance of Captain Roberts, two well-known local young men, Messrs. Geoff Manley and Reg Hodges, appeared before an official examiner, and gained the airman's license with "flying colours." We heartily congratulate them on their success.

December 2 1931

Pyramid's First Airman

Reg Hodges claims the distinction of being Pyramid's first airman, and also being the first resident to acquire an aeroplane. He arrived here early on Monday morning with his air machine, a sports model Spartan Moth, and made a graceful landing. He is the recipient of numerous congratulations.

House Swimming Sports

Our swimming sports were held in magnificent weather conditions and the level of enthusiasm and participation by competitors was particularly impressive. Whilst records tumbled and students gave their all in the pool, the sportsmanship displayed was also a highlight of the day. House Captains Ed Caburnay, Ethan Ellis, Mikayla Gibson and Olivia Hampson demonstrated great leadership as they motivated their troops and had them entering as many events as possible to gather points for their team.

Competition in the pool was tough all day, with Loddon house coming home with the win.

The parent v teacher v school captain v sports captain relay was once again the highlight of the day. This time the school captain team was awarded first place after the staff team was disqualified for using an illegal swimming aid to enhance their performance.

It was also great to have such parent enthusiasm with the Junior events. The much anticipated race, that junior students describe as the fun race, when parents drag them through the water, was once again hotly contested. Parents demonstrated their prowess in the water as they had their eyes focused on the finish line. Pleased to say that all children in tow, also completed the race safely.

Thank you to Miss Closter and Mr McCann and all staff for the organisation and orchestration of a very successful day. A special thank you to Sarah and the St Patrick’s staff for their organisation of the Junior events.

Finally, thank you to the large, support-ive crowd of parents, grandparents and friends of the college who came along to help us celebrate the day.

Bowls NewsBowls NewsBowls NewsBowls News

Saturday Pennant : Last Saturday saw the completion of the first and second rounds of the finals matches with no representation from Pyramid Hill. Both P H Divisions 1 & 3 finished neatly at the bottom of the ladder. Matches were played at Kerang with the following results: Division 1 - Cohuna Golf defeated Kerang 84-54. Barham Services lost to Leitchville 63-64. What a nail-biter!! Division 2- Cohuna Golf lost to Barham Services 55-70. Cohuna defeated Cohuna Golf 72-63. Division 3 – Kerang Blue defeated Barham Services Gold 84- 55, Wakool defeated Cohuna Golf 83-71. A great effort by Cohuna Golf and Barham Services to be represented in all Divisions. Next week’s Preliminary finals will be held at Barham Services with Kerang playing Leitchville in Division 1, Cohuna Golf White playing Cohuna in Division 2 and Barham Services Gold playing Wakool in Division 3. It all augurs well for some more great bowling. It’s much more relaxing on the sidelines!

Tournaments: This Wednesday we hosted an Any Combination Fours Star Tournament sponsored by Moama Bowling Club and Riverina Bowls. A full report will be in next week’s Press. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the day. What a treat for those who attended and enjoyed Kate’s catering cuisine! MKR eat your heat out!

Well done Marie S. Some of our players have been getting in some more practice at coming second – this time at local tournaments. However, Marie S. went one better when she and two other players from the Northern District won at Regional level and will now compete in State finals in Bendigo later in April. Well done Marie.

Social Night The days are flying past so quickly.

Before you can turn around it will

be March 24th when we are

celebrating the fifties. Our Club

Rooms are fast approaching the

fifty year anniversary since their

opening. That momentous occasion

gave us incentive to stage a Fifties

Night. Of course, for those who can

remember, the fifties was a great

decade of energetic dancing - a time

when dancing became quite radical

with the introduction of the jitter-

bug and rock and roll which

involved quick movements and

fancy footwork. We would like to

and extend the invitation to all to

come along and listen to some great

songs from the past presented by

“Justuss” who are a singing duo

from Cohuna. All who have

witnessed these ladies perform

praise them very highly – they come

with very strong recommendations.

Cost of the night is only $20 which

includes a very yummy supper.

Drinks are available at Club bar

prices. There will be prizes and

spinning wheels so a night of good

fun and entertainment is assured.

You are not required to dance

although some may get into the

groove. Some may wish to dress in

fifties attire. But dressing up and

dancing are not requirements for a

great night. Be there, or be square.

Harry’s Epic Burke & Wills Journey Mr Harry Vidal, in his home-made wagon, with his trusty Clydesdale horses, George and Henry, and loyal Dalmatian-Border Collie-cross Akeesha, has left Royal Park, where Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills began their ill-fated trip in 1860. The 3250km trek, titled Harry’s Epic Journey, will take Mr Vidal through some of Australia’s harshest terrain towards his destination at Normanton and a fundraising goal of $50,000 for beyondblue.

“I’m fundraising for beyondblue because the organisation does so much to help people in rural areas, such as Australia’s farmers, who are doing it tough,” he said. “The suicide rate in rural and remote areas is almost double the rate of major cities.

Mr Vidal, 61, will follow Burke and Wills’ route as closely as possible, stopping at several places where they set up camp, including the Dig Tree at Cooper Creek. Burke and Wills died on or about June 30, 1861.

Mr Vidal, from Rockleigh, South Australia, will travel no more than 20km a day, sometimes stopping for several days at a time to rest his horses and meet locals.

Donations for beyondblue can be made at bb.org.au/harrys-burkeandwills or given to Harry in person, at Mitiamo.

Harry will be at Mitiamo—opposite the

Mitiamo Store on Friday 23rd March from

Barefoot BowlsBarefoot BowlsBarefoot BowlsBarefoot Bowls

The Barefooter Season culminated with players experiencing the full gamut of weather conditions. Over the five week period we have gone from the freezing cold to the steaming hot, to the sublime and finally to the windy. Mother Nature certainly made sure that the full range was included. For the final night play was commenced with players divided into three groups and a roll to the coloured disc. Winners were Joe, who won on a measure, Kim and Jorja (mother & daughter prowess) and they were each presented with delicately engraved coffee mugs. A trophy that they will no doubt treasure for life! Play then resumed for the prestigious awards with several teams vying for the major titles. Finally after a couple of hours play, the music ground to a halt and the bowls were all returned to the store room. Before the presentations began President Marie thanked the Club members for their contributions toward making the nights so successful. Thanks went to Kim for the provision of the slaw, Wayne for cooking the Bbq, Jean and Nola for help in the kitchen, Robyn for assisting with the bar and all manner of things, Allan for having the greens ready and Lionel for his overall management of the project. Without the tireless work of these people the Barefoot Bowls sessions would not have run so smoothly. Thanks also to the players themselves who assisted with returning the bowls to storage, tidying around the greens and helping in the kitchen – especially Kellie on the last night. Also prior to the presentations, wardrobe fines were imposed on those folk who left garments of clothing lying around the place following last week’s game. Their 50cent fines went straight to the red-pig. Of recent times we have been bombarded with TV coverage of the Oscars, The Logies and the BAFTA Awards but they pale into insignifi-cance when compared to the B’Foot Awards presented to the players. Winners of the best Power-play for the series were George, Pom and Geoff with a high score of 14 shots. They were presented with fine glass drinking vessels. Other B’Foot Awards were as follows: 12th and last place were Ally, Sammi and Keeley. They were recipients of the different sized wooden spoons allocated according to height and complete with a sweetener in case they had been left with a bit of a sour taste.

11th Ash, Roy & Therese who were presented with sharpeners to help them sharpen their skills. 10th Lions’ Club accepted by Liz, Rebecca & Emily as the Lions’ Club representatives fizzled out. They may or may not share the bag of Fizz Buttons with the original players. 9th Ash G., Adam & David were reminded that playing bowls is also about building friendships. Their packets of Fisherman’s Friends were a subtle reminder of this point or they could take their prize and go fishing. 8th Tanya, Kim & Kellie were presented with a pack of cards each. If they consider playing bowls a bit slow or tiring they were encouraged to take up cards and see if they could ace anything. 7th Olivia, Jorja & Jordann were compensated with little Malteser chocolate bunnies because we can all attest to times when bowls makes us feel like a bit of a bunny. 6th Carmen, Colleen & Des. They were deemed the most likely candidates to eventually take up 60 and over bowls given their ages and the direction that 60 and over will probably take by the time they reach the age requirement. Surely by that stage their eggs will have hatched into the hens which are so zealously pursued as dead chooks. 5th Grant, Geoff & George were presented with chocolate bars in appreciation of their weekly raising of the bar – or at least soundly raising the bar profits. They generously declined a major prize as a gesture of encour-agement to others. Thanks, guys. 4th Coffee Bank – Deb, Hayley & Leigh who crashed out of the final three contention on the last night. They must have been spitting chips for letting a great opportunity slip through their hands so they received a packet of chips. 3rd Donnie, Teagan & Kelvin showed great potential but were encouraged to take up skittles before returning to competition. Their packets of Skittles should serve as a reminder. They were also presented with a meal voucher generously donated by the Vic Hotel providing them with something to chew over. 2nd Byron, Teagan/Cody, Pete were given packets of Extra to provide them with a bit of extra power, precision and providence. Their major prize was donated by Miller’s Ag. Get with the power!

1st place and Champions were Max, Pete & Joe. They were presented with notebooks in which to make important recordings such as when Pennant Season starts and Member-ships fees etc. They were issued with a warning that unless they become Club Members next season they will be hit with a handicap next time they front up for Barefoot Bowls. The Coffee Bank generously donated their major prize. Congratulations to all winners. Thanks for your involvement and support to our Club. We hope to see you return next year for another round of fun and friendship. And a very big round of applause for all generous sponsors. Best wishes to Byron and Teagan for a wonderful wedding day and many years of happiness. Another match made in heaven on the bowling greens.
