Foreward by Rosanna and Melissa Grelo

About thirty-five years ago, my parents embarked onmy Father’s dream of opening up his own riding schooland importing and breeding Lusitano horses. What I’msure they did not know at that time was how many livesthey would touch by doing so.

Hundreds of people have walked through our doors, thousands have seen my Father and his studentsperform, and all of them have marvelled at his abilityto turn any horse into gold. Out of a little farm northof Toronto, one receives not only some of the bestinstruction on horses available, but learns aboutoneself and life. It is as if one transcends time, entersthe universe of nature (sometimes jokingly called thePortuguese Clock), is welcomed into the warm familyof the farm we have created, and sits in the stillness

of the present moment where nothing else exists. Because of my Father’s expertise and my Mother’s fullsupport in helping make his dreams come true, I have the rare opportunity and inheritance of this legacy thatthey have created. It is truly a gift to bear witness to the work of my Father and to see how far one whois following his passion can reach.

I continue to be fascinated by his skill, I enjoy watching myself and others advance in our skills by practicingwhat he has imparted to us, and I strive to be as complete a person in my life as he is in his.

So here we are, about thirty-five years after the dream began to become reality, and I am fortunate enoughto have both my parents alive and well and still living the dream. As my Father turns seventy years of age,he continues to teach, breed horses, give clinics and perform; my Mother still puts up with him, keepingus all in love with each other and nourishing our stomachs and our souls. It is an understatement to say thatI am blessed to have been born into this life with them.

In celebration of my Father’s 70th birthday, I salute you, Pai, the master of horses, the centaur of my universe.

FRANK GRELO, THE DREAMERMany know that my Father came to Canada with the dream of creating a riding school in the tradition ofclassical horsemanship from his native Portugal. What many don’t know is that he worked tirelessly for manyyears to even be able to take the first step in that direction. He worked on the assembly line for AmericanMotors. After meeting my Mother, Claire, he bought a small supermarket where he worked around the clockstocking produce, keeping inventory and living in the apartment upstairs, saving every penny. Finally, aftermuch blood, sweat and tears, he purchased a farm in the rolling hills of Caledon. It was worth every apple ...

FRANK GRELO, THE TASK MASTERIn so much of what he does, you can see my Father’s military background. For me and my sister, Rosanna, that came in the form of a very strict upbringing: from the age of four, chores like mucking stalls and feed-ing, no sleeping in on weekends or risk being awakened by a mock trumpet, army-style, and earning everypenny of our allowance by getting creative with horsemanship like running summer riding camps together. Each lesson required self-discipline. I was seven years old when my Father said, “You will sweep this barn untilit’s clean and I don’t care how long it takes”. Hours later, I looked back at beautiful, clean aisles with a hugesense of accomplishment. Every activity was a lesson to be learned.

FRANK GRELO, THE PHILOSOPHERI have said many times that my Father was born in the wrong era. His contemporaries should have beenSocrates,Aristotle or Xenophon.Anyone who has had even one lesson or lunch with him knows exactly whatI mean. And you all know that he has a saying for everything! But he has come by these teachings honestly, living a life that has brought forth so many challenges that one could only become wiser from the experi-ences. Sayings like, “A fish always dies by its mouth”, and “I don’t get pregnant through my ears!”

To my Father on reaching the milestone birthday of seventy full years of life ... No person could feel morefortunate than I do to have had you wear so many hats in my life. A life of challenges and hard work has madeyou strong and, in turn, you have passed those lessons on to your children. You could not have given usa greater gift than following your dream and living your passion. Congratulations on creating a legacy thathas literally touched every corner of the earth and inspired so many. I can only hope that this apple has notfallen far from the tree ... Happy Birthday!

Melissa Grelo

So many know Frank Grelo, the Riding Master, but I first came to know him as

Frank Grelo, my Father. It has been a unique perspective of a man that, for so

many, is larger than life, and for many, has played numerous roles. Here are a few:

Feeling the power of a thunderous collected canter beneath my saddle is one of my life’s never-to-be-

forgotten moments – like so many of the days and nights I’ve spent at the Grelo farm.

When I arrived at the farm with my first horse in 1986, I had no idea I was about to begin a chapter of life

that would bring me personal growth beyond all my expectations. I learned how to ride a horse, navigate

myself through my fears, and reach moments of euphoria I would otherwise never have known. And that’s

only a small part of the story. Frank Grelo taught me to focus inward and increase the scope of my

consciousness.

Frank Grelo’s commanding presence in dealing with horses is nothing less than fascinating. Each lesson he

gives is an exercise in focusing the mind and staying focused - which is how this man lives his life every day.

I have never known anyone so relentless in their pursuits, and yet so inviting of others to share in them.

He enables others to see through his eyes, to reach their own level of greatness. This is his private badge of

honour.

As the 70th birthday of my dear friend and Riding Master draws near, I feel it’s an appropriate time to

acknowledge that he has touched the lives of many, and has, in fact, altered the destiny of some.

This book contains a few of these stories. We are happy that Mr. Grelo continues to thrill and to educate,

to lavish patience on his students and guide them toward achieving personal greatness.

Introduction

One student who contributed what they received in equal measure was Chuck McKenzie. Chuck always had a piece of wood or power tool in his hand, fixing and renovating. In fact, many a weekend we rode around a loud table saw he had set up in the arena. For quite a few years, Chuck spent week nights, weekends and most of his holidays at the farm for quite a few years. On Chuck's fiftieth birthday, his wife, Barb, presented him with Corcel. I don't think shesaw much of her husband after that! Sadly, Chuck passed away in 2011. His fellowship and contributions to the farm will never be forgotten.

I find it difficult to express in just a few words how muchFrank has impacted my life in the thirty-two years sinceI first met him at the Schomberg Fair. It was the summerof 1980, I was eight years old, and I had become completelycaptivated by the fearsome dance performed by Frank andAbu. I just had to experience that too, and so marked thebeginning of my being a Frank Grelo student. It becamemuch more than that over the years. Frank not onlyinstilled in me a deep appreciation of Classical Dressageand the Lusitano horse, but he became my mentor, influencing how I approach life both inside and outside ofthe arena. I hear his words in my ear, Just keep movingforward, Lady and I get through anything in life, whetherI'm on the back of the horse or have my feet on theground. The best way I know to honour his enormouscontribution both personally and to the world of classicalequitation, is to carry a piece of his legacy through mywork in equestrian and wellness, and in the breeding andpromotion of the Lusitano horse.

I have not met Frank Grelo yet but I want to thank him. I want to thank him for beinga world–class coach, a mentor, a father–figure, and an inspiration. Daily, whether at the farmor at home, I see the influence Frank has had on my wife Rebecca. I understand things likepiaffe, shoulder in, collection as Rebecca tells me how she learned them from Frank.WhenI see Rebecca ride I can hear Frank’s voice coaching her along. I hear about Claire, Melissaand Rosanna and how welcome Rebecca felt at the Grelo farm. I see the amazing Lusitanohorses that Rebecca brought from Frank’s farm to ours in Victoria, B.C. as her way ofhonouring Frank, his teachings and what they mean to her. I hear people refer to Frank asa Riding Master and I can’t help but think that he is so much more.Thank you Frank, forhaving such a profound, positive influence in the lives of those you teach.

I was no more than six years old when I first started lessons with Frank. It was fun jumping off Dugan into Frank’s arms! I looked forward to goingto the farm for a lesson or to do chores, whatever I could do – so muchso that my Mother would threaten to take away my barn privileges ifI misbehaved! I remember once Frank asked if I wanted to ride Negrito,I was so nervous that I just avoided eye contact until Frank forgot thesuggestion! Riding got a lot more serious when I was given a project horseor when I could tack up and ride any of Frank’s stallions, always a specialprivilege. I can still remember what it felt like to ride temperamental Pluto,I was about nine years old then. My first project when I was eleven washelping to train Neguinho, a young Lusitano stallion owned by Vitor Silva, whom I rode almost daily for a year. Under Frank’s instruction this horsewas probably my greatest teacher. For my fourteenth birthday, my parentsasked Frank to breed Tentadora and Favorito, and soon after that I wasthe proud owner of Tricana. From the moment I saw her I knew thatbreeding horses would be in my future. It’s been a great experience cre-ating two more Lusitano mares. Frank, you’ve been a father–figure to methroughout the years.Thank you for teaching me so much about horses, and so much about myself.

Becoming Frank Grelo’s student was the first and greatestadventure I set out on after graduating into the real world.Needless to say, I was disappointed: Grelo farm wasn’t thereal world. I had clearly wandered into Never Never Land, populated by storybook horses and characters who spun talesof “the old country”. And of course there was Frank,a Riding Master/Philosopher who might have rubbed shoul-ders with Xenophon in a different age.

During my time at Frank’s, I rode twice, three times, some-times more, every day. Each morning began as dark as the nighthad ended, slowly lifting into dawn as I rolled a wheelbarrowback and forth from stall to compost. The way a stallion feltat the end of the leadline as we moved through the dance ofturnout became familiar, as did the half-wild explosions thatoccurred each time a sauntering mare was led down the longbarn aisle. I became physically fit in a more satisfying way thanI’ve ever been able to accomplish at a gym.

I had come for the riding – full of undirected aptitude that Ihoped could be honed into something with focus. My journalentries from the time are embarrassingly rapturous: On thishistoric day, I , Megan Elisha H.Tong, piaffed and passaged onthe back of a stallion as magnificent as any that exists,

What I had not come searching for was found, an unexpectedand therefore precious gift, in the form of Frank’s philosophy.I suppose I may have guessed at our first meeting (a kiss onboth sides, for balance) that Frank’s instruction would proveto transcend the particulars of riding well. To preface this,I should first say that I had made up my mind to get the mostof my experience with Frank before I ever arrived, by puttingaside my own ego and philosophy while under his tutelage.Within a short time, I knew my trust had not been misplaced. My riding was transformed in the first three days of lessons, not because I was spectacular but because Frank was actuallyteaching me. And so on the fourth day when I found myself

standing with Frank, looking out at the fields through a gentlerain after the barn had emptied, I initiated a quiet conversationwith him. Specifically, I told him of my own dreams. I wantedto be really, really good at this. More than anything. I wantedto have a riding school, years down the road. I wanted to trainhorses to the highest levels. I wanted to ride like I breathe. And Frank, who had spent the last few days watching me rideand trying to translate my raw enthusiasm into propertechnique, nodded and answered the barely-asked question:Am I good enough?

The advice he had was among the best I have ever been given.I paraphrase here: Have you read all those books, the onesabout Young Masters? No? You see, kiddo, there are no suchthings as Young Masters. That’s why you haven’t found any ofthose books. You have a good start, you have all the tools, andyou have the desire. But everyone “wants” – to be a greattrainer, to be a “Riding Master.” People like you, now, are com-ing to me to try to learn. But if you are still doing it in five years, how many of them will have given up for lack of patience orability or money? You were not born in a golden cradle, butneither was I. When I first started, and when you first start,it is a lot of work – but if you are still doing it in five years, youare five years ahead and people will be coming to you to learn.Ten years, and you are still doing it? Twenty years? Here I am.I have always been Frank Grelo. But I was not Frank Grelo whenI started.

I was twenty-two years old. I should relax, there’s no rushingthis kind of knowledge. Riding is not like a single fact, to bememorized and re-used. It is a set of tactile memories, a com-plex language shared with animals entirely unlike ourselves, and all I can do to become great is keep doing. I have a roadmany years long to follow. A road that my own Riding Mastertravelled, first as Frank Grelo and then as Frank Grelo.

Grelo Farms: where dreams come true. It has been an honour to be yourworking student, caring for your wonderful horses, learning all they have toteach me.Thank you Meister, from the bottom of my heart!

I prefer to immerse myself in an environment where the learning is rich andaugmented by those with whom I'm learning. I found this place at the GreloFarm. Sundays became a religious day for me, mucking stalls, scrubbing andfilling water tanks, parceling out flakes of hay and waiting with bated breathto be told which horse I could ride that day – heaven. Then I met andbecame great friends with Trish Botting. I also met Esmerada as a week-oldfoal. Friendly, coy and strikingly beautiful, Esme is out of Tricanaby Manjerico II. I'm very proud to have undertaken her training myself –we've come a long way in a year! I value all of the time, effort and energyof the extended Grelo family, and I cherish each and every minute I get tospend with my very own Lusitano mare.Thank you, Frank, Claire, Rosannaand Melissa.

Frank Grelo and his horses took an interest of mine and turned it into a passion, created an atmosphere ofrelaxation, respect, and a seeking for knowledge and understanding of horses and people. He taught me personallythat to understand and know horses was to work with them 24/7, or as much as otherwise possible, and toabandon fear, again as is possible. He has also been a very great personal friend and mentor.

We met Frank Grelo through an article in the Toronto Star back in 1985.At first, I wrote letters to Frank, and we corresponded back and forth bymail. I would ask Frank such questions as, how to teach a horse theSpanishWalk, and Frank would reply with a detailed letter. Over the yearsI had some memorable lessons on some very memorable horses and video-taped quite a number of riding performances. And, it is Frank that made itpossible for us to have our own Lusitano, Soñada. The Grelo family has al-ways been very generous to us – Frank with his time and lifelong expertisewith horses, Claire with sharing her warm–hearted conversations andincredible meals, and Melissa and Rosanna with their always–welcomingsmiles. We thank them all.

Be ready when opportunity comes ... luck is the time when preparation andopportunity meet. – Roy D.Chapin, Jr.

It was six years ago when I first called Frank Grelo. It was my husband’s 40thbirthday. His dream was to learn to ride well on his favourite horse, theLusitano. Since that time, things have changed around my home. All threeof my children have also joined the riding program at Grelo Farm. Calm andForward, they chant on their way to lessons. Jeff always smiles, as this famousFrank saying is also posted on his office door. We feel privileged andgrateful for the opportunity to learn to ride with Riding Master Frank Greloand cherish his warmth, kindness and knowledge.

I've made many footprints in and around the life of Frank Grelo! Eventhough it's been well over twenty years, my memories are as acute as ever... the smells of the barn, the wobbly wheel on the grain cart, to the soundthe chalkboard made when Frank would write down who was riding whathorse for our lessons: Dugan, Joe, and my favourite, Northern Lights. What I love so much about Frank is his awareness and compassionateunderstanding of each of our personalities. He knew our minds that day andwhat we were capable of doing. From my very first lesson on the longe lineto one of my last with my fellow quadrille riders, we were always given histime and dedication and never left the barn without learning something new.Thank you, Frank, for your teachings, wisdom and, most of all, your friend-ship - they are lessons and examples I've applied to my life today. My yearsand memories at the farm are truly some of the best experiences of my life.

As instructor to my family and my many lesson students, I love to quote Frankand his infinite horse wisdom. Some of my favorites include: Lady! What are youdoing? Any monkey can wind a horse up – it takes a rider to calm him down. And something he told my son a long time ago, Use your head for somethingother than raising lice, fellow! We love you, Frank.

I cannot count how often I've heard Claire's signature greeting, "C'mon, have lunch with us!", as she swiftly addsanother place setting to the table. There always seems to be enough food for everyone, proof enough for me thatshe's an angel with an agenda all her own. Claire lives for her family - looking after Frank's needs (including makingsure he has his lunch on time!) and checking in with her girls every day.. She is also a good friend to all, ready tolisten or apply her wisdom to solve a problem. In this photo Claire is, as usual, taking care of business while Frankis taking care of the horses at a show.

When I first came to meet Frank Grelo, I had no idea how much I would learn over the nexteight years, and how much impact he would have on me. Frank introduced me to ClassicalHorsemanship first, working on the basics of equitation, calm, straight and forward, his mantra always ringing in my ears, and from there, the more lofty goals of ClassicalDressage. I am so grateful to Frank for enabling me to fulfill my lifelong dream of havingmy own horse, and introducing me to the amazing athletic Lusitano breed. I am fortunateto have one of his lovely Lusitano mares, Carinhosa, as my equine partner. She continues toteach me even well into her senior years. I adore her!

When I first saw Frank giving his lessons, I just fell in love with his thinking, his approach and the respect he gave to the horse. When he asked if I wouldlike to come to his barn and work with him, I thought,How could I not takesuch an opportunity to discover this new world of riding? During the timeI worked at the farms, I owned my Canadian stallion, Math, who startedworking at real dressage at the same time as me. We went far together, andstill have a long road ahead of us. He is a wonderful teacher. To me, theLusitano breed is the perfect horse for dressage. One day at Grelo FarmI met this little horse with a gold-coloured face. Frank said, This one is foryou!! This is how I came to own Eldorado, out of Raposa and Orgulhoso. With him, I will probably ride at a different level and learn many new things. Thanks so much, Frank, for putting Eldorado in my life. I hope you will stayclose to me to be our guide.

Frank, do you remember???

My terrifying ride on Dugan in the back field, when he kept runningup to the barn to turn and gallop down the hill when I tried to get himback for our lesson?

Screaming on the inside as you made me capriole on Negrito! Jumping off Pluto mid-lesson because I was terrified to ride him! Galloping in 20-metre circles in the arena on a crazy Raphael after hebucked me off a few weeks before, determined that he wasn’t going toget the best of me again!

Hearing you say my name on my 16th birthday as I strolled up to you andEstrondo.

Singing Portuguese songs with you and Kerry on the old (and very scary)truck!

I certainly do. Memories I will cherish forever. You have been an integralpart of my life, and I will never forget all the great times and the lessonsyou taught. Wishing you all the best on your 70th birthday. Put your orangesto the sky and strut proudly (you’ve made it this far!).

The wisdom in Frank’s words, calm, forward, and straight go far beyond thesaddle. Under his caring guidanceI have learned the majesty and truepower of the horse, but also to finda centre within myself. Frank and hisstallions continue to illustrate to methat with determination no feat isimpossible and we all can be thequeens of our own desired kingdoms.

I was fortunate enough to have spent a great deal ofmy childhood around Frank, having learned some greathorsemanship from whom I believe to be one of thebest riding masters in the world. However, it was notonly great horsemanship that I learned from Mr. Grelo,he taught me many life-lessons and principles that havehelped shape me into who I am today. For that, I willbe forever grateful to Frank and his family and theywill always share a special place in my heart.

I know I'm not alone in stating that Frank Grelo hasbeen the most influential person in my dressagejourney. After meeting Frank in 2001, I started seeingthe horse as a physical and spiritual reflection of hisrider. The horses that Frank allowed me to ride andthe incredible lessons he taught always seemedto culminate in an experience that could neverbe replicated. For my 18th birthday Frankallowed me to ride Corsario, and I was so ex-cited, I could barely breathe. That ride is still, literally, the highlight of my life. With eachlesson I would gain confidence, learn moreabout horsemanship and have the absolutetime of my life.Thank-you Mr. Grelo!

Over the many years of riding instruction that I have had, it is Frank’s teachings that have stayed with me and have been the mostinfluential. If I feel myself getting stuck, it is his videos that I review, and I always end up with a much happier horse. I am very grateful tohave experienced working with such a talented man.

Beverly Furer is a graphic arts professional, living inToronto, Canada. Her first encounter withhorses was at the farm of a childhood friend, Fern Dodick in Amherstburg, Ontario andagain at the age of sixteen at her Uncle Phil Arber's farm inVankleek Hill, Ontario. Her AuntSamme introduced her to the pure joy of riding by giving her the reins of her Appaloosastallion, Chief, for an entire summer.Ten years later Beverly bought her first horse, a littleArabian named Peter Pan, and brought him to the Grelo farm. It was there she wasintroduced to the art of horsemanship and her own Lusitano, Girasol. For the next decadethis stallion would provide her with monumental challenges and endless rewards. A proudmoment for Beverly and one of her many contributions to the farm, was when she arrangedfor Frank Grelo and his students to perform a stallion quadrille and classical exercises in theColiseum at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair for two successive years. Her talent as anartist has blossomed in celebration of the richness that Frank Grelo and his loving family havebrought to her life.

"You Can't Have it All in the Same Pocket" is one of Frank Grelo's famous sayings, reservedfor when life falls short of our expectations. But on occasion, it's worth a second lookto find that, in fact, the opposite can also be true.
