Above: Kathy is the matriarch of the Herbert clanand still very much involved with the businessthat her husband, Dick, started. With a family business, long vacations are nottypical. 'We're on call,' says Joe Herbert of Dick'sAuto Sales, who does enjoy a few days off nowand then with family. From left, Joe and KatieHerbert with children Ella, Evan, Maggie andLanie.
mong the dozens of photos onthe walls of the repair shop and
used car dealership is a picture ofMaggie Herbert, now age 14, whowas then too young to walk but justthe right age to hold a wrench in herpint-size palm.
Maggie's sister, Ella, age 6, boastsher own drawer in the garage's toolcabinet that yields screwdrivers, ratchet drivers and cutting pliers.
Ten-year-old Lanie answers thephone. Brother Evan, age 12, in hisspare time changes tires and accom-panies staffer Jake Murphy on tow-ing calls.
“I run the tow bed, the winch, hooking up cars with chains,” saidEvan. “Jake does the driver's sideand I do the passenger side.”
But Evan also has plans for thefuture, when he hopes to run thefamily business, Dick's Auto Sales
on Route 52 in Kohlertown.“We do car repairing, selling, tow-
ing and body work,” explained Evan.“My plan is to expand the sellingand expand the body work.”
“I like cars and trucks, and I likedriving,” Evan said. “I have since Iwas little. I know this business andwhat's going on. It kind of runs inthe family.”
Evan and his sisters represent thethird generation of Herberts in theindispensable work of keeping local
cars running smoothly. It's a true mom, pop and kids busi-
ness, where a friendly sign pro-claims “If U can't stop, wave!”
Grandma Kathy Herbert serves aspart-time bookkeeper for her sonand daughter-in-law Joe and KatieHerbert, at the business founded 52years ago by husband Dick Herbert. He died in 2014.
“Joe and Katie are running Dick'sAuto now,” said Kathy. “The focus ison them.”
“Don't let her tell you that,” quipsson Joe. “She's still very involved.”
Joe and his sister Jacki Mallett, who lives in South Carolina, grew upin the business, pumping gas andsweeping the floor well before theywere in their teens. Their fathertaught them the meaning of hardwork and “he was always there tokeep us in line,” said Joe.
Dick Herbert, who grew up on afarm in Fremont Center, began thecar business in 1963 at a ShellStation (now a laundromat) acrossthe street from Jeff Bank inJeffersonville. Eventually Herbertmoved twice, to a Texaco stationwhere Justus Auto is now and to thecurrent site, which sold Amoco gas.

“Without all the people who workfor us, we wouldn't be able to dothis,” he said.
Apart from Murphy, CameronAbplanalp, Tyson Gosley and BobKohler in the shop, Gloria Garn doesoffice work. Numerous friends andfamily members help out. The keyplayer among them is Mark Hubert, who married Katie Herbert's sisterAudra.
“Mark worked for my dad for 22years,” said Joe. “He is a big part ofkeeping everything going.”
Joe himself worked with his fatherfor 20 years, returning home toJeffersonville after college inMorrisville, N.Y.

from the Jeff-Youngsville CentralSchool, and the couple married in1999. At first, they lived above thecar business. A year later, theybought the house next door. Katie, ateacher for the Liberty school dis-trict until the couple began havingchildren, now runs the PlayfulLearners Nursery School on NorthBranch Road.
“I do most of my bookkeeping work(for Dick's Auto) from home,” Katiesaid. “It's nice being home and hav-ing the kids able to be right nextdoor, too. Joe and I work together oneverything. The kids learn to helpout – even on snow days, they'reshoveling and cleaning snow off thecars – and they learn to help people.”
But the automotive business ischallenging, and Dick's Auto is notexempt from facing the seismicshifts taking place in the industry.
“Cars are changing every day,”said Joe Herbert. “It's hard to keep
up. You have to update tools anddiagnostic equipment all the time, and it's expensive.”
But in the end, the satisfaction ofhelping people and working withfamily makes the effort meaningful.
“Dick and I worked side by side,”recalled Kathy Herbert. “I was hispartner and he was mine. It wasenjoyable. Now it's passed down tothe next generation and the next.”
Twelve-year-old Evan Hubertdelights in pondering the future.
“The business will be here,” hesaid. “It's good to know that we havesomewhere to go – a place that'sbeen in the family for 50 years.”
‘I grew up in the business, went away to college, came backto help out and here I am.’
Joe Herbert
Evan Herbert, age 12, relishes making something new out of old, as in body work on cars.'First, I look at it and take a picture in my mind. Then after I'm finished, I look at it and say'I did it.'”

ometimes pasta can be boringand somewhat repetitive, with
the same flavors and the samesauces. Northern Farmhouse Pastareally takes a step out of the box withtechnique and flavor, while still keep-ing it simple.
Northern Farmhouse Pasta is runand owned by Bob Eckert and hiswife Jennifer, who reside in the ham-let of Roscoe, otherwise known asTrout Town. The small artisan busi-ness took off in 2011 but its historygoes back much farther.
Bob is originally from Queens whileJennifer hails from Roscoe. They meteach other by chance, at a friend’swedding in the city. Although Bobwas working for a large, successfulconstruction company, they soonmarried and bought a house upstatewhile keeping his house in Queens.Bob commuted to the city onMondays and back to Roscoe onFridays, spending the weekends with
his family. One aspect of Bob’s construction
job was to take clients out to dinner,
where he would pick apart the dishes, trying to figure out how they madethis, what flavors were in that, the
inspiration continually growing. “One day I realized-my stepson was
about to turn 21 and my youngestone was growing so fast; I didn’t wantto miss out anymore because I was sobusy working and away during theweek,” said Bob. “That’s when I start-ed to think, something needs tochange. So I began brainstormingabout what I could do. Should I farmupstate? Should I grow mushrooms? Then it came to me, ‘pasta’.”
Bob started making dough andhandcranking pasta in his home inQueens – just to experiment – andbegan handing it out to friends asgifts for them to try. His pasta was ahit, the flavors different and unique;friends and family encouraged himto start selling.
So in July of 2011, Bob and Jennifer, set up a stand at the Roscoe FarmersMarket and Northern FarmhousePasta was born. It was when theystarted selling at the Callicoon

Farmers Market, that they realized apasta-making machine was essentialto the business. Within two months, and with the business doing so well, they decided to sell the house inQueens and use some of that moneyto finally buy a machine. The busi-ness gained momentum in 2012, andin addition to selling at the farmersmarkets, their pastas were also beingsold in various stores across eightstates, as well as individual orders.
What makes Northern FarmhousePasta so unique is that all of theiringredients are locally sourced. Theyare the first and only pasta businessthat uses locally grown wheat from asmall farm upstate that grows onlyabout 25 acres. The cheese for theirravioli is from Tonjes Farm Dairy inCallicoon; the mushrooms are for-aged from the forest or grown, an artnot commonly practiced here. Theirvegetables are sourced from areafarms, and they also have their own
chickens and ducks for eggs. In thefuture they hope to have more oftheir own animals, as well as theirown vegetable garden.
“Could I buy from a large supermar-
ket or a chain store? Yes, but I’d ratherbuy from people who are around me,because I know where my ingredientsare coming from. I know who I’msupporting.” said Bob.
“Step away from the typical sce-nario or thought of ‘If I’m buyingfrom a local, I’m just basically feedingtheir family,’” Bob continued. “Yesyou are, but also try to think of it as

you are supporting that person orthat business, who in turn could besupporting a local farmer by buyingfrom them, which in turn is increas-ing that farmer’s property value or thevalue of their product, which increas-es the value of the community whereyou live. Essentially you are support-ing yourself by buying local, becauseit all comes back around, it’s a cycle.”
The Eckerts decided to open up ashop last year at 64 Rockland Road, inan old refurbished farmhouse on 40acres of land, just down the road fromthe center of town. There they are ableto display an assortment of pastas aswell as sell their signature, freshlymade ravioli. They keep it simple byusing no more than six ingredients(two of them being salt and pepper),rather than the 30 or more unpro-nounceable ingredients you find in
store bought pastas. Some examplesof the pasta you can purchase areGnocchi Sardi, Spinach Rotini, WoodFired Portobello Fettuccine, and oneof their best sellers, Bourbon BarrelCracked Pepper Pappardelle.
Soon after opening the store, theybegan serving dinner on Friday andSaturday nights. Bob is the chef andevery weekend he creates a differentmenu depending on what’s in season, with both meat and vegetarianoptions available. They were so busytowards the end of the summer thatthey had to switch to reservation only, and at times turn people away. Yet,they don’t want to expand, focusingon their product and its quality, ratherthan making more seats in the restau-rant.
Jennifer said of her husband, “Ithought he was crazy when he startedall of this.” Laughing, she continued,“I still sometimes think he’s crazy, butpeople love the product. It works.”
The Wood Fired Portobello Fettuccine is abig hit with a nice smokey flavor.

Northern Farmhouse Pasta wasrecently featured on the FoodNetwork channel, on a show called“Great American Food Finds” andShopRite recently came to theEckerts to talk about selling their pas-tas and raviolis in their stores. Theremay also be another possible TVshow in the works for the couple.
Smiling, Bob concluded, “I get to bea kid most of the day. Making pasta islike playing with playdough. The bestpart is, this went from a passion to abusiness, so I get to be with my familywhile enjoying what I do.”
There is a rustic, artisan, home-y feelinginside the local shop of Northern FarmhousePasta where a variety of fresh pastas (theirsignature ravioli, gnocchi, rotini, linguine, fettuccine) in a variety of different flavorsare sold.
orty-three years ago, Paul A.Rouis, Jr. opened his CPA firm
in Wurtsboro, and while he hadvisions of a successful future inbusiness, no thoughts or plans wereever given to the possibility of beingjoined by any of his four children.
As the years passed, his son PaulA. Rouis, III became an engineerand relocated to the Saratoga area, and daughters Dina and Aimeeopted to be teachers in localschools.
However, following his graduationfrom St. Bonaventure and after afew years working for an accountingfirm in Westchester, son Jonathanjoined his father’s practice in 1997.Two years later, the father-son teamwas transformed into a successfulpartnership at Rouis & Company.
The family touch is also present in
the very building which houses thebusiness as it was designed by PaulA. Rouis III with interior design byPaul Jr.’s wife Marianne.
Asked if working together presentsany challenges, Paul responds,“We’ve always gotten along verywell and although it never occurredto me when Jonathan was growingup that we would be workingtogether, we have created a uniquefamily business.”
Jonathan adds, “It’s great to seeyour father every day and as amulti-generational partnership, we
appeal to many clients who mayalso work with other family busi-nesses.”
In addition to sharing professionalinterests, Paul and Jonathan areknown for their political, charitableand community involvement. Many may recognize Paul as pastSullivan County Administrator andJonathan for his years as SullivanCounty Legislator.
With a bit of twinkle in his eye,Paul explains, “While we do providepersonal service and develop rela-tionships with our clients, many like
knowing we are both familiar witheach other’s work and enjoy the lessformal environment in our office. We are public relations related peo-ple who fight the image many mayhave of an accountant,” he contin-ued, “What tends to surprise peopleis in a parent-child client situation,I tend to gravitate toward the childwhile Jonathan relates well with theparent.”
For Jonathan, working with familyis best described as, “A great oppor-tunity. It is certainly worth doing.”
Asked if he thinks any of his tengrandchildren may someday beemployed by the family firm, Paulanswers, “Well, we have five boysand five girls between my four chil-dren. One has graduated with afinance degree from Iona, but Idon’t think he will join us at this

“My older son, Jonathan II, is cur-rently pursuing his college educa-tion and will more likely follow thepath of his uncle in engineering,”answered Jonathan, “and we willwait and see what my younger son,Alexander, decides.”
Paul concludes, “We are a closefamily and although we have noknowledge of a traditional partner-ship, we do what we think is rightand it’s worked.”
Jonathan and Paul Rouis are a father-sonteam that has built their family business intoa successful partnership at Rouis &Company, LLP.
rying to get all three principalsof the Resnick Companies
together is nearly impossible. Tryingto sit down patriarch Billy and hissons, Butch and Randy, is like playinga game of “catch me if you can,” as allthree men are in constant motion, and not necessarily in the same placeat the same time.
This is understandable, consideringthe scope and breadth of the workthat they do under the umbrella oftheir many different companies.Even finding a starting point is diffi-cult, so perhaps the best place tobegin is at Billy's beginning.
In 1970, a 17-year-old Billy Resnick“ended up” in Sullivan County afterhis car broke down here on his way toupstate New York. He never left. “Myfirst job was de-beaking and inocu-lating chickens,” he said proudly. Aseries of other odd jobs led him to hisown landscaping business, whichended suddenly during the gas crisisof 1974. “It was like a switch turnedoff,” he explained. “So I started buy-ing and selling stuff,” and ResnickSupermarket Equipment Supply wasborn.
Eventually, his sons came to workfor the business, especially Butch, who, having dropped out of school, began working full time for his dadat age 17. “I started as a truck driver’shelper – and got to know all of theins and outs of the business,” hesaid.
Butch took over the SupermarketEquipment business 15 years agoand since that time, he and Randyhave grown the Resnick empire toinclude a supermarket equipment
parts business, the Coffee Factory (acoffee roasting business), DanielResnick Rentals (90 rental propertiestotal), The Sullivan Hotel (which is inthe process of becoming a Ramadaflagged hotel), BHR (formerly theiconic 50-year-old mainstay Bernie'sHoliday Restaurant), Crust ItalianEatery (serves pizza, yes, but has afull Italian cuisine menu as well),Brew (closed for now, but a re-worked version will open in thespring), the Resnick Industrial Parkin Glen Wild (comprised of eight lotsfor industrial businesses, two ofwhich are now occupied), FanaticsBar and Grill and Resnick Energy.
Ongoing, large renovation projectsinclude Main Street Mountaindale, where they own numerous buildingsand storefronts on Main Street, reno-vating and renting them. And ofcourse, the Apollo Plaza, the long-abandoned mall in Monticello. Bothare behemoth and ambitious proj-ects, but it should be obvious by nowthat the Resnicks are “all in” when itcomes to investing and believing inSullivan County.
While Billy is largely retired, he stilllends his experience and advice to hissons. Randy, a long-time chef andrestauranteur (he and Butch ownedand operated the legendary DodgeInn in the ‘90s), is responsible for theoperation of BHR, Crust, Fanatics,Brew and all catering that takes placeat BHR and the Sullivan.
He is also responsible for ResnickEnergy (formerly Global Oil), whichhe founded 12 years ago as a way tokeep the driver of his then-business,Global Trucks and Equipment, busy

We are oneof the top five taxpayers in the Townof Fallsburg, so that should give youan idea of how deeply invested we arein this community. This is our home –we grew up here. Our goal has alwaysbeen to bring back life to SullivanCounty.”
Working on breathing new life intowhat was recently a modern-dayghost town, the work the Resnicks aredoing in Mountaindale will leavethose who haven't visited in a whilehappily surprised.
“In our restored buildings we havetenants including a furniture manu-facturer, a company that producesorganic toothpaste and the generalstore will be open again soon,” saidButch. “We have a new companycoming into our Glen Wild IndustrialPark, that is building a factory thatmakes specialized airplane parts, sowe're also bringing living wage jobsto the area.
“I'm not a politician, I'm a busi-nessman,” explained Butch. “SullivanCounty had a defeatist mindset – Ihave a different mindset. Our life isbased on recycling. My father taughtus how to make old supermarketequipment run like new again, andwe've applied that concept to everylevel of our lives. That's what we needto do in Sullivan County.”
While Randy agrees that SullivanCounty is in need of a re-tooling,going totally old-school won't do.Those days are gone. “We need tomarket ourselves as 'updated-old-school Sullivan County' – build on
the nostalgia of what once was, butfor the modern world. The markethas changed. The Resnick Group rec-ognizes that. Our companies repre-sent the true evolution of entrepre-neurship in Sullivan County.”
