had yourse l f asked th is same ques t ion to Sr i la Guru Mahara j , S r i la

Bhakt i Raksak Sr idhar Dev-Goswami Mahara j . Sr i la Guru Mahara j

rep l ied tha t Bhak t i v inod Thakur had sa id tha t i t i s no t poss ib le to rec-

ogn ize who is a Va ishnava un less tha t Va ishnava revea ls h imse l f to us .

So we are a lso pray ing to the Ho ly Name tha t , “Desp i te my d isqua l i f i-

ca t i ons , my o f fenses (aparadhas ) , you can , by you r own mercy revea l

yourse l f to me. ” Th is i s so hopefu l , because by one 's own min iscu le

s t reng th one does no t have to t r y to move moun ta ins o f f a l se ego in

o rde r to ga in en t rance in to the worsh ip o f t he Ho ly Name o r the asso-

c ia t ion o f the param Va ishnavas . A l l can be revea led w i th in our

hear ts , i f we rece ive the mercy o f a Va ishnava, such as yourse l f .

When Gop ina th Acha rya was cha l l enged by Sa rvabhauma

Bhat tacharya - “What i s the p roo f tha t you have ga ined the Lo rd ' s

mercy and I have no t ” - Gop ina th Acharya rep l ied , “A l though the Lord

was l y ing in d i v ine t rance in your own house , you cou ld no t recogn ize

H im. ”

In h is essay to the Harmon is t , S r i l a Guru Mahara j remarks tha t

because the j i va sou l i s cond i t i oned by h is samskara , o r acqu i red

na tu re , no t a l l may be ab le to recogn ize who ca r r ies the t rue mercy ,

who is Sr i Guru. But Guru Mahara j dec lares: “Real i ty can asser t i tse l f .

L igh t does no t requ i re darkness fo r i t s pos i t i ve p roo f . The sun by i t se l f


can es tab l i sh i t s supremacy over a l l o ther l i gh ts . Be fo re an open and

unb iased eye , the gu ru ( rea l gu ide ) sh ines above a l l p ro fessors o f phe-

n o m e n o n . ”

Fo r tuna te l y , I do no t have to depend on my own l im i ted powers o f

pe rcep t ion to be ab le to d i sce rn where i s my t rue bene f i t and who i s

my rea l guard ian . As many i l l us t r i ous Va ishnavas were unan imous ly

p roc la im ing S r i l a Guru Mahara j t o be a t rue sa in t and a pa ram

Va ishnava , so f rom the mou th o f S r i l a Guru Mahara j came more

than adv ice : energe t i c supp l i ca t ions to serve your lo tus fee t . He

showed us the t rue na tu re o f sp i r i t ua l rea l i t y by compos ing you r own

d i v i ne p ranam man t ra , enab l i ng us t o see and unde rs tand rea l i t y .

You t ru ly s tand e f fu lgen t be fo re us . Of tha t I have no doubt . Bu t

a las , my p rob lem is ano ther . As Mahaprabhu H imse l f dec la res : the re i s

no shor tage o f g race and mercy in the Ho ly Names o f the Lord . He

adds , my on ly lament i s tha t because o f my o f fenses , I am unab le to

have any rea l a t t rac t ion fo r the chan t ing o f the Ho ly Name.

When Mahap rabhu spoke w i t h P rakashananda Sa raswa t i he

remarked tha t my sp i r i tua l mas te r sa id , “You a re a foo l . You a re no t

qua l i f i ed to s tudy Vedan ta ph i l osophy . ” Th is pos i t i on was adop ted by

the Lord to i l l us t ra te the l im i ta t ions o f h is aud ience , the mayavad i

sannyas i s .

Un fo r tuna te ly , i n my case I am rea l l y unqua l i f i ed to en te r i n to the

presence o f the t rue Va ishnavas . Sr i l a Gurudeva , you a re a lways

ex tend ing you r me rcy , g race and f r i endsh ip t o me , bu t my na tu re and

ex is tence a re so low tha t I am ashamed to come in to the p resence o f

d iv in i t y . I am ashamed. I have no th ing to o f fe r , and my very ex is tence

is i t se l f an o f fense to a l l tha t i s t rue and pure .

I p ray to be ab le to con t inue to se rve you and o f fe r someth ing a t

your lo tus fee t . A l though tha t “serv ice” i s cer ta in ly impure , s t i l l you

may ex t rac t someth ing o f va lue f rom me, as you a re a lways merc i fu l

the Mas te r (whose g lo r i es a re anyway un l im i ted and un fa thomab le )

“ I am so low, so mean” e tc . Whi le th is sen t iment , to whatever depth i t

becomes, “You a re so k ind , you saved me, me, me” and no t rea l l y a

tes t and t r ia l in a pecu l ia r way (D iv ine d isp lay ! ) . He had to face oppo-

s i t i on o f a pa r t i cu la r t ype . Turbu len t were those bygone days . Wi th

H is hones t and s incere p rayer to Sr i l a Sr idhara Mahara j , He expressed

Himsel f as fo l lows: “My dear Sr i la Guru Mahara j th is has not been o f

my own w i l l bu t Yours . P lease he lp me ou t o f such an embar rass ing

s i tua t ion . P lease take th is cha l i ce con ta in ing b i t te r con ten t away f rom

me. I f You do not come to my a id w i th in 3 days, I w i l l w i thdraw myse l f

by g iv ing up the whole th ing. ” Amaz ing ly , a f te r exact ly 3 days, Sr i la

Sr idhara Mahara j appeared g lo r ious ly , as d id Lo rd N i rs imhadeva to

ever- increas ing g lor ies o f the Sr i Chai tanya Saraswat Math ’s Miss ion
