THU, 8 MARCH

Queens of Syria Queens of Syria (the documentary) tells the story of fifty women from Syria, all forced into exile in Jordan, who came together in Autumn 2013 to create and perform their own version of the Trojan Women, the timeless Ancient Greek tragedy all about the plight of women in war. Not one of them had ever acted before. What followed was an extraordinary moment of cross-cultural contact across millennia, in which women born in 20th century Syria found a blazingly vivid mirror of their own experiences in the stories of a queen, princesses and ordinary women like them, uprooted, enslaved and bereaved by the Trojan War. It was a process charged with emotion and fraught with challenges, as long buried issues came to the surface, and at times the project itself hung in the balance. Reservation is required. Stella with the Red Gloves Born with values that don’t agree with the customs and perceptions of her time, Stella, a wild spirit that cannot be tamed, surrenders to love without inhibitions and chooses a rupture with a painful end instead of the false happiness of a dull life. Iconic and much loved, both in its theatrical version and the film adaptation by Michael Cacoyannis, Kambanellis’ work serves as a hymn to unconventionality. The writing of the most important Greek writer of the second half of the 20th century combines the beat of lively language with emotion. Konstantinos Arvanitakis, who directs the play, sheds light on the timelessness of the subject, in a performance with live music composed by Stamatis Kraounakis. In Greek with English and Turkish subtitles. Venue: THOC New Theatre Building (9, Gregori Afxentiou str., CY-1096, thoc.org.cy) Time: Thu & Fri 20:30, Sat 17:00

Winter's Tale - Royal Ballet Christopher Wheeldon, Artistic Associate of The Royal Ballet, created his adaptation of Shakespeare’s late great romance The Winter’s Tale for The Royal Ballet in 2014. Building on the success of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Winter’s Tale received ecstatic praise at its premiere, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its intelligent, distinctive and emotionally powerful story, told through exquisite dance. It is now widely judged to be a modern ballet classic. The story follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a seemingly miraculous return to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. With powerful designs by Bob Crowley and atmospheric music by Joby Talbot, The Winter’s Tale is a masterful modern narrative ballet. Venue: Rialto Theatre (19, Andrea Drousioti str., Platia Iroon, CY-3603, T. 77777745, rialto.com.cy) Time: 18:30 Entrance: €15|€10

WED, 28 MARCH CYPRUS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Easter Concerts by CySO With Greek Orthodox Holy Week just around the corner, the CySO offers us a concert full of pain and passion. The first work, Rudolph Barshai’s transcription for string orchestra of Shostakovich’s String Quartet no. 8, which the composer wrote in just three days in July 1960, shortly after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is a work which the composer himself considered his epitaph. The programme continues with anguish at the death of Asa, Peer Gynt’s mother, but also with a threnody in contemporary Latvian composer Peteris Vasks’ “Musica Dolorosa”. Last but not least, Haydn’s “Passion” symphony, a name not coined by the composer himself but rather given following a performance of it in the German city of Schwerin during Holy Week of 1790. Conductor: Jens Georg Bachmann
