ALL ABOUT RABIES What Is rabies? Rabies is a zoonotic disease that spreads when a warm blooded animal infected with the virus bites a person. The virus spreads through the nervous system. Facts: · All animal bites do not cause rabies. Only the animals which have contracted the virus can transfer this disease. When bitten by an animal, just take Immediate medical measures, as mentioned in the do's and dont's category. If possible get the dog examined by a veterinarian to confirm if he/ she had rabies. If a dog is salivating excessively or barking un- neccesarily he/ she Is not rabid, they could be suffering from ulcers, stomach Infection or any other problem which can be easily attended to by simply calling any local animal welfare organization or a veterinarian. Prevention: · Never disturb or provoke a female when she is with or around her puppies. Do not tease or provoke dogs during mating season (around May and October). Do not provoke animals by throwing stones, hitting or kicking them. As per the World Health Organization, Government of India guidelines and the Animal Birth Control (Dog) Rules, 2001, the only scientific, practical and legal way of checking the dog population and rabies is by undertaking the Animal Birth Control project and vaccinating the dogs against rabies. Treatment: Oo's: - Wash all wounds under running water for 10-15 minutes. Clean the wounds gently with a detergent or any soap available. Antiseptics like Dettol, Savlon or Betadine may also be used. Report at the Civil Dispensary sector 19, Chandigarh for further treatment. (number mentioned below). Get a W.H.O certified vaccination course available for It.
