Activites for All Aboard Trains Activites for All Aboard Trains The following activities are well suited as follow-ups to learning about the types of railcars and cargo on trains. 1.Art Have each child draw a different rail car on a 11” by 81/2” piece of Manila drawing paper and put these cars together on a wall so it resembles a real train going around the classroom. Names of the various types of rail cars could be cut up individually and placed in a paper bag and each child gets to pull out a name to see which car s/he has to draw. One train could be a passenger train and another could be a freight train . 2.English Language Arts Use the names of the trains for various Language Arts activities: alphabetical order; syllables; vowel sounds; Creative writing; spelling. 3. Science  -See “Project Collabor ation” on this Web site for related Science experiments. The following 3 units lend themselves directly to the science related to railways, force, speed, wheels on the trains, levers, pulleys, inclined plane, etc: i. How Does Your Bicycle Work? ii. Life in Motion iii. Complex Problems, Simple Machines 4. Social Sciences-have students find objects in their homes which have been imported, i.e. various foodstuffs, furnishings, cars, heating oil, etc. and have them list these objects and the countries they have come from. Then have the students decide which type of rail car these things came in and write the name beside each object. Some research may be necessary.
