Birmingham has a ‘Big City Plan’ - a 20 year vision for its continuing transformation into a world-class city centre. Ridge, working closely with Centro, is managing an extension to the city’s tram system, a critical part of the plan.

As part of the aim to improve connectivity, the existing Midland Metro tram system is being extended through the heart of the city centre, from the existing terminus at Snow Hill, through to New Street Station. The project includes an additional 1.4km of track and four new tram stops with associated overhead line, utility diversions, traffic signalling and new high quality public realm.

The project has seen trams return to the streets of Birmingham for the first time in over 60 years and represents an important first step in ambitious expansion plans for Midland Metro in the West Midlands.

Ridge is the project manager and programme manager for the Metro extension and has also managed the delivery of the associated Tram Depot expansion to accommodate the new tram fleet. PROJECT MANAGEMENT | COST MANAGEMENT | BUILDING SURVEYING

ANTHOLOGY DEPTFORD FOUNDRYThe Ridge building services division is gaining huge momentum and we now have a team of mechanical and electrical engineers in our London office. Clive Roberts (who joined us from Troup Bywaters + Anders) leads the team, to which he has recruited additional expert engineers. The team is already established in the London market and our current projects include a new neighbourhood known as Anthology Deptford Foundry.

The £70M residential & commercial development is scheduled to complete in 2018 and comprises eight buildings between 5 & 8 storeys and a 22-storey tower. Ridge are providing detailed building services design for the development, which is supplied with core services from a central energy centre containing thermal storage and a small scale CHP (combined heat and power system).

Following the success of this project we are in negotiations with the Client for further residential developments in the capital.

BLETCHINGDON PRIMARY SCHOOL Bletchingdon village, in north Oxfordshire, has a new primary school courtesy of The Duchy of Cornwall. Ridge provided the full building services design for this very traditional building which achieves a high level of sustainability and low carbon objectives.

Ridge expects to support further schools seeking to improve their buildings through the CIF schemes via the Academy Capital Funding Scheme. Despite the Government’s recent perceived U-turn announcement that all English state schools are to become academies by 2020, the Government clearly still wants 100% academisation but the pace of change has been adjusted.

A statement by the DFE, released on 6 May 2016, reads:“The Government has decided, while reaffirming our continued determination to see all schools to become academies in the next 6 years, that it is not necessary to bring legislation to bring about blanket conversion of all schools to achieve this goal”

Since 2012 Ridge has been working with academies to develop funding strategies and prepare submission documents to secure government grants to improve the condition of buildings. We provide these services on a “no-win-no-fee” basis with the proviso that Ridge secures the professional services for the capital projects when funding is awarded. This offers a risk-free solution to schools, which go on to benefit from our unrivalled expertise in successfully delivering refurbishments and new builds in the education sector.

As project partners we are always pleased to bring news of the BLOODHOUND SSC, the super-sonic car set to break the land speed record. The car is now 95% built and almost ready to run. The team aims to start UK runway testing by the end of this year and set the 800mph record in the summer of 2017, with a 1,000mph attempt planned for 2018. Meanwhile, BLOODHOUND’s education programme continues to grow, engaging over 100,000 children a year with exciting maths, science and engineering projects.

RECOVERY AFTER DISASTER

ARCHITECTURE | BUILDING SERVICES ENGINEERING | CIVIL & STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

Ridge is frequently called upon by our insurance industry clients to respond rapidly following major loss incidents, such as fire, flood, impact damage and even earth quakes. Typically this leads to our multi-discipline teams assessing the extent of damage and returning the buildings to their pre-loss condition. The diversity of our services allows us to mobilise immediately and provide pragmatic technical, legal, financial and Health & Safety advice.

Our experience in this field enables us to offer guidance on both the short-term requirements of businesses affected by a major loss, and the most efficient and appropriate course of action to reinstate a building or facility.

An impressive rapid reinstatementMagdalen College School suffered a fire that damaged the sports hall and other amenity areas. The School appointed Ridge as a single provider for all professional services who, together with Zurich Insurance, Cunningham Lindsey and the contractor SDC, successfully reinstated the facilities within an impressive 9 month period, to meet the academic programme.

SUPERSONIC CAR READY TO RUN!

The Centenary of the Royal Air Force will be marked with the completion of a comprehensive, multi phase, HLF grant funded redevelopment of the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon. One of the Museum’s ambassadors is the BLOODHOUND super-sonic car driver and current world record holder, Wing Comander Andy Green.

Ridge is project manager and cost manager on the Museum redevelopment in Hendon, where exhibitions will showcase the RAF's 100-year history. As part of the celebrations, you can donate £30 and have your name written on a Red Arrows Hawk Jet, which will fly across the world throughout the 2017 display season. The Ridge team are integral to the McDonald’s Restaurants team delivering a national rollout programme of store re-imaging. In addition, our Challenge70 charity fund raising campaign will raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families with children receiving treatment at children’s hospitals nationwide.

Our new Manchester office has 28 staff who specialise in programme management, project management, cost management and development management. The Manchester team works closely with our Liverpool team to deliver services across the North West.

Projects we are working on from our Manchester-Liverpool base include: • Metro Midland Birmingham City Centre improvement scheme (cover story) • £60M Circle Square serviced apartment development in Manchester • £130M City Suites development in Salford • £40M new National Science & Innovation Campus at Daresbury • New Enterprise Zone for Lancashire County Council • £50M Princes Reach residential development on Liverpool’s waterfront

A particularly exciting project for the Manchester office is the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel at Old Trafford cricket ground. Ridge is involved in the construction of a £12M, 150-bed hotel for Lancashire County Cricket Club. The ground will remain operational throughout the course of the works and construction will therefore have to be managed around a busy programme of international and county cricket matches. Our experience and unrivalled knowledge of the site makes us perfectly placed for the job: Ridge has project managed £55M+ worth of ground-wide development since 2008. This has included a players’ and media facility, 7000-seat stand, refurbished pavilion and a 1000-delegate conference venue.

Guy Austin reaches retirement in June, 40 years after he first started at Ridge; however, we are delighted that he has agreed to continue working with Ridge as a consultant, maintaining continuity for his clients and projects.

It is no secret that Guy has a passion for motorsport and aviation. His unique understanding of the motor racing industry has led Ridge to deliver many successful projects in such a specialist sector (we have worked for 19 Formula One teams over 25 years; indeed, 9 of the last 11 World Championship F1 cars have been produced in Ridge buildings.)

Guy was made an Equity Partner in 1991 and, as a member of our ‘Exec Group’, he has been instrumental in leading and growing the business over recent years.

We are pleased that we are able to continue working with him, in his new role as a Ridge Consultant.
