TRANSCRIPT
Jeremy & Aliza Davis Jeremy stands lean in build and intellectually curious. Aliza is vivacious, ready with a smile and quick in pace. The couple, and their five children, are part of the new generation of Young Israel of Passaic-Clifton, yet blend comfortably with people of all ages. “What really appealed to us about Young Israel was the welcoming and inspiring at-mosphere for davening, and programming for children,” said Aliza, noting how the couple joined the shul 4 years ago. “We also appreciate Rabbi and Rebbetzin Glasser’s hashkafic approach that emphasizes the advantages and unique challenges of being a committed Torah Jew in a complex modern world.” “We loved how the shul focused on the whole family with learning and programming for men, women and children,” Jeremy added. Jeremy and Aliza married and moved to Passaic in 2006, attracted by the community’s warmth and passionate commitment to religious growth. Shortly after joining YIPC, Aliza chaired the Youth Committee for the first two years Young Israel was in its new building. There, she oversaw programing and training of the group leaders and helped set the standards of the department. Aliza continues to play an active role in youth, teen, and adult programming in the shul, including its dynamic Shavuos all-night learning, and programming for the Yomim Nora’im (High Holidays). Meanwhile, Jeremy is a founding member of the Kiddush Cleanup Crew and participates in many of the shul’s learning opportunities, including its daf hashavua. For Aliza, Young Israel represents a continuation of her connection with the broad-er Orthodox community. She grew up in Hewlett, NY, graduating from Hebrew Academy of Long Beach (HALB) and Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls, before spending 1 ½ years in Israel at Michlalah. From there, she earned her BA in psychology at Stern College and, after stints at NCSY’s summer programs and na-tional office, she went into formal education, teaching limudei kodesh at The Moriah School, Yeshiva Beis Hillel (YBH), then Bruriah High School and Bais Yaakov Machon Ora. Aliza is currently in the process of getting her MA in Jewish
Studies from Touro's Graduate School of Jewish Studies and this fall, Aliza will be joining the limudei kodesh faculty at Naaleh High School for girls in Ridgewood, NJ.
“I owe much of my passion for Jewish communal work to my grandparents, who
were Holocaust survivors and lost so much, yet remained extremely committed to
Yiddishkeit and rebuilding the Jewish community. And also to my parents, Dr.
Norman Blumenthal and Haidee Blumenthal,” she said.
“I’ve always enjoyed working with children and teens, whether at camp or volunteer-
ing at great organizations like NCSY, Chai Lifeline, Yachad and OHEL. And I
continue finding rewards working with pre-adolescent and teen girls in the yeshiva
system.”
Jeremy grew up in a small hamlet in upstate New York, between Manhattan and
Albany., NY. He enjoys challenging new acquaintances to play Jewish geography
using his hometown.
Jeremy was raised in a home with a strong Jewish identity and his parents, Rich and Susan Levine, were active in their synagogue and in communal organizations. He at-tended public schools and was involved in Jewish youth organizations. Jeremy’s inter-est in Judaism surged during a group trip to Israel, after which he began taking on new observances, including being the only kippah-wearing student in a high school of 1,600 students. From a young age, Jeremy was drawn to words and the power of language. This appreciation has influenced both his professional and religious life. Jeremy attended Rutgers University, earning an undergraduate degree in English Literature and embarking on a journalism career that included editorial roles at the Financial Times Group’s Mergermarket.com, Mergers & Acquisitions Journal, and SC Magazine. Jeremy is currently vice president and senior content editor at the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). Religiously, Jeremy was active during his college years at both Hillel and Chabad. He subsequently spent time learning at Sh'or Yoshuv Yeshiva in Far Rockaway, NY, and
Shapell's Darché Noam in Israel. In shul, it is not uncommon to find Jeremy among the last to complete the Amida. He finds solace and connection to God through prayer, and the very notion that through speech we can create a positive or negative change in the world. Jeremy and Aliza are the proud parents of five children: Shmuel (12), Avigail (10), Elisha (8), Yechiel (6), and Orly (4), all of whom attend YBH of Passaic.
Marc & Chava Kurtz
Marc and Chava Kurtz will never be mistaken for wallflowers.
Whether it’s boosting a new learning opportunity, initiating a monthly Carlebach Friday night service or helping with kiddush cleanup, the Kurtzes are much more comfortable giving than receiving.
Which is why it may be ironic – though entirely fitting – that Marc and Chava are finally on the receiving end as honorees at the Young Israel of Passaic-Clifton’s annual dinner, which takes place on Sunday, June 16 at the shul. Joining them as honorees are Jeremy and Aliza Davis, a dynamic couple with five children.
“We appreciated the diversity of the membership,” Marc said, sharing why the couple joined YIPC in 1994, just two years after relocating from Washington Heights to
Passaic.
“It was a place where our children were welcome and comfortable. We felt a sense of community and belonging.”
Chava added, “Then came Rabbi and Rebbetzin Glasser (in 2005). They have been in-spirational role models to us and our three children. We became more involved to feel a greater sense of connection to the shul and to help make it a place where we not only go once weekly on Shabbos, but for other opportunities to learn as well as to have fun.”
Chava did her undergraduate studies at Michlala in Jerusalem and at Stern College. She received her Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University and
currently practices in subacute rehab settings working primarily with a geriatric popula-tion.
The couple brings a midwestern warmth to the shul. Raised primarily in Chicago, Chava grew up in a traditional Orthodox home where both her parents were very active in the Jewish community. Her father, Rabbi Marvin Pachino, started out as a pulpit rabbi,
before switching to chinuch, serving as principal of Judaic Studies at the widely-recognized Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago and then as headmaster of CHAT (Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto).
Her mother, Judy Pachino, taught at the local day schools and was national president of Emunah Canada. “My parents have always been involved in Jewish community life through their work and affiliations with other organizations,” said Chava. “My parents were proud religious Zionists.” Not surprisingly, her parents made aliya nearly 12 years ago.
Raised in St. Louis, Marc earned a BA at Yeshiva University and a Masters in
biochemistry at St. Louis University. He has spent the past 29 years working at Merck, one of the nation’s largest pharmaceutical companies, in research and development of pre-clinical therapeutics.
“Most of my career I worked on cholesterol lowering by small molecule inhibitors,” said Marc. “Part of the excitement is working on medical therapies that can really make a difference in people's lives.”
That sense of “making a difference” played out decades ago in Marc’s religious life, where he followed his older brother, Rabbi Shmuel Kurtz, to embrace an Orthodox way of life. Marc and his siblings grew in their religious passion.
“The transition to orthodox living was a result of a summer program in Israel, living with a family on an orthodox Moshav,” Marc recalled. “This incredible experience and lifestyle inspired us to ‘convert’ our parents to living a more orthodox style of Judaism.”
Today, the Kurtz’s love of Judaism and community is reflected in their children: Eitan (who is married to Brittany and lives in Massachusetts), Dani, and Aliza.

IN HONOR OF OUR DEAR CHILDREN
Each of you, a very special gift to us!
EITAN and BRITTANY: Your individual talents in technology and special
education respectively, as well as your growth in your careers and the respect
that you have gained in your places of work are impressive. But even more
impressive is the selfless giving of your time as a couple, and your dedication
to YACHAD and helping special-needs children. May you be blessed to keep
giving, and in return be the recipients of Hashem’s many blessings.
DANI: Your dedication to Talmud Torah and your Avodas Hashem in and
of itself is inspiring. Devoting so much of your time to this and juggling a
rigorous pre-Med curriculum at the same time seemed nearly impossi-
ble. Your self-discipline and perseverance is remarkable. As you begin your
pursuit of a medical degree and career, may Hashem grant you the ability to
maintain a balance of both worlds successfully. AND never lose your unique
sense of humor and fun!
ALIZA: Our baby, our princess (who never really was a princess because you
were too busy keeping up with your brothers). Where has the time gone? We
are proud of your many accomplishments, but more so of your desire to
keep learning and growing. Your love of Torah and striving to live a Torah-
true life is admirable. You are never one to compromise on your values. With
Hashem’s help may you be matzliach as you begin the next phase of your life,
and in all your future endeavors.
With much love,

insight - and I look forward to continuing working together.
Aliza - it was a privilege working with you on behalf of the YIPC youth. Our Youth
Department is flourishing (thanks to the tremendous leadership of Sara Younger), but
you set-up the infrastructure and systems for this to happen. Although you are
