GCSE – General Certificate of Secondary EducationFocussed on your future

visit bellerbys.com 2322 GCSE – focussed on your future

From September 2014 we are introducing a GCSE Pathway Programme at Bellerbys Brighton which will offer students as young as 13 the chance to start their preparation for university early. This exciting new programme provides students with the opportunity to establish the language, learning and cultural skills they need to succeed at university. With excellent pastoral care and support, we help every student to explore their academic choices in a safe and secure College environment.

This, along with our other GCSE programmes, has a clear focus on what students expect to study at university and we nurture every student’s passion for their chosen subject, encouraging them to learn through state-of-the-art technology and enriching extra-curricular experiences.

We know that many parents dream that one day their child will graduate from a top university, and everyone at Bellerbys College works towards making that dream a reality.

For students who have not yet completed their high school education in their own country and want to start their journey to university now, this GCSE programme is an important first UK qualification.

One-year accelerated programmeProviding a fundamental grounding in a number of core subjects, the 1 Year GCSE programme is both intensive and efficient.

Daily homework and regular testing to keep you on trackDoing homework everyday is an important part of studying. Students will progress quickly, and learn key skills that will help them with their next academic step. Student learning is kept on track through regular in-class testing which allows teachers to identify a student’s key strengths, as well as areas where they may require additional support.

English and Mathematics plus a choice of other subjectsStudents will study two important core subjects - English and Mathematics. They then have a choice of four other subjects to study, with a focus on their future academic ambition.

Personalised teaching and monitoringThroughout the GCSE programme students will have personal attention from their teachers - monitoring and assessing progress, keeping students on track for their academic goals.

Progress directly to a Bellerbys Foundation or A Level programmeGCSEs are just the beginning. Once the GCSE programme has been successfully completed, students are ready to progress to either the Bellerbys A Level or Foundation programmes. From there, the next step is university study.

Pre GCSE and 1 Year GCSE

Pre-GCSEPreparation for your GCSE programmeThis course is ideal for students wishing to study the 1 Year GCSE course but whose English has not met the required standard of IELTS 4.5. Students wishing to undertake the Bellerbys pre-GCSE programme are usually 14 or 15 years of age.

Flexible course lengthThe course can be anything from one to three terms, depending on abilities, and leads to either a 1 Year GCSE September or January start date.

30 hours study each weekAll students will receive up to 15 hours of English studies to help them improve their language skills. They will also receive 15 hours of core subject classes including Mathematics, ICT, Art, Science, Business Studies, PHSE and PE.

Extra care for younger studentsWe understand that Pre-GCSE students require extra care, as often coming to Bellerbys is their first experience of being away from home. Our classes run for the whole day and students receive close supervision, beginning each morning with a formal registration under the care of a personal tutor, who monitors both social and academic progress.

By the age of 13, many children have already begun to discover what they are truly passionate about. Bellerbys approach to learning gives each child the opportunity to explore their personal interests, while building life and study skills that will serve them well in their future university applications.

Bellerbys GCSE Pathway Programme nurtures a student’s passion for their chosen subjects. Experienced teachers help develop and guide every student, supporting their talents and, at the same time, encouraging them to learn new skills. Students are fully immersed in their subjects by studying and experiencing more than the prescribed curriculum.

This broader understanding helps every child engage with their studies giving them a strong foundation upon which to build further knowledge. As always, there are mandatory subjects at GCSE level, which are taught to the highest possible standard.

Enrichment programmeEnriched learning is a key part of the Bellerbys experience and each of the six different GCSE pathways has its own tailored enrichment programme to help students ‘learn around the subject’. Through a programme of specially focussed extra-curricular activities, students are immersed in their subject in a way that can develop their lateral thinking.

Trial modulesWe recognise that while many students are ready to decide on their pathways straight away, others may still be trying out different subjects. That’s why Year 9 students can get a taste of everything offered by taking a series of trial modules. They try nine core modules, and eight pathway subjects to find out what suits them best. Each trial module lasts four weeks.

Choosing a pathwayYear 10 students are required to choose their pathway from the start. As they may have missed the opportunity to trial modules in Year 9, there will be regular reviews with teachers to ensure that the correct pathway has been chosen.

If necessary, teachers will support a change of pathway to support the students ambitions and ensure that their studies inspire and interest them to achieve excellent results. All Bellerbys students are exceptional, but for those with a particularly high academic ability we offer an Oxbridge pathway, subject to assessment.

English in Preparation for PathwaysThe EPP programme has been designed to provide 3 hours intensive English teaching each morning with a varied academic programme each afternoon. EPP students will also have full access to the Enrichment Programme as well as all sports and activities.

Inspirational clubs and activitiesWe hope that students learn and grow as much in their spare time as they do inside the classroom. Bellerbys College Brighton provides schedules of optional extra-curricular activities that all students are encouraged to take part in. From team sports to debating societies, photography to theatre visits, exhibitions, shows and events, a busy social calendar is offered.

The Foundation programme has been tailored to provide students with the skills and experience they need to succeed at university and beyond. It is our belief that knowledge gained by experience is knowledge for life, and at Bellerbys we go beyond the curriculum. As part of the Foundation programme, students are immersed in their subjects from the day they start through a wide range of enrichment activities, which allow them to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of their subjects.

Through visits to universities and industry work places, guest speakers in class and subject specific competitions and through societies and groups run by the college, our students turn theory into practical reality.

The successful completion of the Bellerbys Foundation programme at the required level guarantees a place at one of over 80 prestigious university destinations.

Shiyi from China studied Pre-Masters Progressed to study MSc Finance & Management at Loughborough University

International students often seek to enhance their prospects by studying abroad to gain valuable experience in another country.

Preparing for the process, a Pre-Masters programme gives students the additional support they need before they start their Masters. It is an ideal choice for those who are academically prepared, but lack the English language skills to study an English-taught degree. Adjusting to a new country and new environment can take time, and a Pre-Masters programme gives students the space to settle in while continuing to learn and advance their knowledge.

Small class sizes mean that any issues, or areas of challenge, that arise can be addressed by teachers before a student starts a Masters programme.

A Pre-Masters programme can mean all the difference in your postgraduate success. Students who take on postgraduate study are interested in giving their academic or industry careers a boost.

Fast, effective progress in reading, writing, listening and speaking The Bellerbys English Language Preparation Programme (ELPP) is a fast, personalised and highly effective programme that will fully equip students to succeed in their studies.

This programme focuses on maximising progress in each of the four core English skills so that students develop a fully rounded language proficiency.

Crucial skills for future academic learningStudents will also acquire the crucial study skills such as examination technique, note-taking and text scanning, to help them learn faster and with greater confidence.

Personal study plan The level of English for each student is tested before the start of the programme, and they will be advised on the length of time they need to study in order to reach the required level.

Close attention from a personal tutorThroughout the programme, each student will be carefully monitored by their personal tutor who will resolve any academic issues which might arise.

Regular testing to keep students on trackProgress will be monitored and students will be regularly tested to help ensure they reach their full potential.

In addition, students will be able to access the exciting Enrichment Programme relevant to their course as well as sports and other activities.

The acquisition of English language will underpin the whole

programme and it is important that students have a strong level

of English on arrival.

visit bellerbys.com 8180 Scholarship programme

Bellerbys College is able to offer scholarships to ambitious, outstanding young GCSE and A Level students that are able to demonstrate a commitment to their studies and the college. Scholarships range from 15% up to 50%.

Being awarded a Scholarship at Bellerbys is an acknowledgment of a student’s outstanding academic performance in their current school. They will be expected to engage fully in all aspects of College life, particularly in the classroom.

Over the past 50 years thousands of Bellerbys students have won places at every university in the UK.

Many Bellerbys students have gone on to work for some of the most successful companies in the world, whilst other are pursuing entrepreneurial success with their own companies.

Dmitry from Russia graduated from Bellerbys Brighton having studied the Business, Finance and Management Foundation. Dmitry received a Bachelors in Business Administration from the University of Bath and went on to launch his own company, London Brand Management. As managing director he looks to develop innovative software that allows companies to augment communications through the use of mobile technology.

Dmitry says of his experience at Bellerbys:

Bellerbys gave me the insight into the workings of business life in the UK and the University of Bath brought out the acumen to be ahead of the competition and think big!

For these reasons, Bellerbys has an outstanding reputation amongst British universities. Bellerbys students are among the best prepared and most likely to succeed of any in the UK. Here are just a few of our high flying alumni.

Tamara from the Ukraine graduated from Bellerbys Brighton having studied the Pre-Masters programme. Tamara received an LLM in International Commercial Law from City University London and is currently working in a private legal practice specialising in corporate, competition and banking law.

Tamara says of her experience at Bellerbys:

Thankfully my education has already helped me to succeed both in the private and government sectors. Bellerbys was just the start on the road of great professional achievements.

Huini from Korea studied the Business, Finance and Management Foundation Programme and graduated to the University of Manchester to study Economics and Business Studies. She then obtained an MSc Financial Engineering from Birkbeck, University of London.

She is now working for the Korea Development Bank (KDB) in London, in Corporate Finance.

The academic knowledge I gained at Bellerbys was invaluable, helping me understand university lectures. I was given tremendous support by teachers, staff and fellow students – even after I graduated. Choosing to study at Bellerbys will become a real asset in your life.

Living in Homestay accommodationHomestay is ideal for students who want to live a relatively independent life, but still have a caring home environment.

visit bellerbys.com 8382 Living in Homestay accommodation

Homestay gives students the opportunity to become immersed fully in UK culture and to feel part of a family, eating meals and sharing their lives to get a real experience of British life. All Homestay accommodation is carefully chosen for the security and friendliness it provides and regular visits are made to ensure that students have everything they need. We offer a choice of either single or shared rooms. All Bellerbys homestays will warmly welcome you into their homes.

Great Britain is a multicultural and diverse nation. This means that families can have different origins and different cultures. British law does not allow discrimination between ethnicity, origin, religion, sexuality or disability.

Included in all Homestay accommodation• Fully equipped study bedroom,

including desk and wardrobe• Breakfast and evening meal• Telephone access• Weekly laundry

Homestay ExtraHomestay Extra retains all the benefits of the homestay experience detailed above, but offers the additional feature to the student of a private bathroom.

Homestay Plus – under 16Students under 16 years of age will be automatically registered for Homestay Plus. (Note: Homestay is only available in London to students who are 16 years old or above). Homestays for students under the age of 16 are registered and assessed by the local authority. This gives extra support and higher levels of personal supervision.

A detailed care plan will be prepared, focusing on class, personal study and curfew times as well as dietary and medical issues. A copy of the Careplan is available on request. Homestay Plus gives extra pastoral care, liaising regularly with the college, and giving extra support to students when they need it.

SharingThere is an option to share a room with another student. Many students find this a very good way to ease the transition of living away from home. They often find it easier to settle in, and benefit from making friends with their new room-mate.

LocationThe location of a homestay in some cases may involve some travel to the college, usually by bus or train. This is a great way for students to see more of the city they are living in.

All Homestay accommodation is carefully chosen – regular visits are made to ensure that students

have everything they need
