SOUNDSPHERE
“There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time.
There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact,
try as we may to make a silence, we cannot.” [John Cage]
The artificial pier area which is in the intersection point between
The Kadiköy Dockland and recreation strip was expected to be
function as a “Performance Space and Mediateque”. Alternative
methods were investigated and developed to form a foundation
for the relations between the functions and the urban area. Is it
possible to create a “cause and effect” context based on the
activity flow of the city? By revealing the increasing and
decreasing activity shift of the city, it is possible. “Sound” can be
a major source for diagnosing this activity shift. “Sound” is a
transposed type of a data that includes every kind of activity
parameter in itself.

HABITAT
The statement of the project was based on the theory that;
Istanbul’s largest airport will be out of function in a projected
future, yet urge of an urban mega-project will occure in the
following years. The area of this urgent design must focus on
the giant landing fields of the airport. The landing fields were
divided to relevant plots so that each designer gets one. Then de
process begun. In the plot no:24, “Habitat” was created.
Habitat, is a pilot settlement, containing every possible cluster
of an urban land. This area will function as an ordinary urban
settlement with its residential, commercial, socio-cultural and
recreational areas. The other face of the settlement will contain
research and development laboratories. Which will use this
pilot area as an experience field. The buildings for science
departments spontaneously gather data from every kind of
equipment and process it. This processing period will lead the
researchs further. As a fact, developments focused on urban
life will be revealed. Like a feedback mechanism, this develop-
ments will turn back to the pilot settlement area to be tested.
The unique way of gathering urban data from so-called “pilot
settlement” will be a valuable approach to research and
development era.

ABSTRACT
abitat’in ortaya çikis hikayesi, İstanbul kentinin engellenemez
genislemesi ile basliyor. Kentin yönetici otoritelerince 3. bir havaala-
ninin yapilmasina karar verilmesi ile, uzun yillardir İstanbul’a hizmet
alanin akibeti muallakta birakiliyor.
Habitat projesinin ortaya çiktigi alan, 100 metreye 600 metre
tasarlanmistir.
Olusturulan yapay topografya, öncelikle organik formlarda tasarlan-
alinmistir.
Yapay topografya üzerinde sivriltilen çekirdeklere ise, Habitat’in bir
kent prototipi olusunu tamamlayacak yasam alanlari eklemlen-
mistir.
barindiracaktir. Çekirdekler, yapilarin bir nevi sinir sistemi islevi
görecek, her türlü veriyi beyinlere, yani ar-ge laboratuarlarina
ulastirmada iletken rol üstlenecektir. Yüksek yapilarin tabaninda yer
almayan, bagimsiz durumdaki bazi yapay topografya parçalari ise
içerlerinde hacimler yer alabilecek sekilde boyutlarda olacaktir.
Yapilarin zemininde hacimlesen bazalar, içerisinde yari kamusal
fonksiyonlari barindiracak, iç/dis dengesini yari-açik olusu ile
saglayacaktir.

OPENUNIVERSITY
Today, the context of a university is expanded. Terms like,
“lecture”, “tutor”, “student” and “class” are standing for more
extensive meanings. As a happening, this type of approaches
occured in many cities of many countries. Is it possible to form
a network of [Open]Universities with the means of architecture?
The project is grounding on the answers to this question.
The term open refers to “open-door” policy of the system. It is
both physically and virtually accessible for every stratum* of the
community. The syllabus and the cirriculum of the education is
flexible and ambiguous. In fact, we cannot call this an education
system in today’s conjuctural know-hows. The beliefs of
open-source knowledge and free-flow of the public intervention
are the focal points.
*Stratum [n.] [from latin; stratum “a spread for a bed, coverlet,
blanket.] a level or class to which people are assigned according
to their social status, education, or income. [ex: members of
other social strata.]

ABSTRACT
he first “Open University” experience occured in United Kingdom,
with the same name, “The Open University. It has a formal organisa-
tional structure with a very defined educational methods. The motto
of the general approach is to use this experience in UK to create a
more flexible, more accessible, less defined and less formal
structure.
T
he site has many interfering axes. The urban pattern sliced into
strings that are creating both spatial and socio-economical tensions.
Congestion Mapping will lead the path of revealing the congestion
points/axes of the site. A fictional “tension topography” will show the
points/axes which are daring to be focused on.
T
he given site has many social cluster beneath. These clusters are
reacting like noble gases. A new concept is needed to break this
tension between the clusters. Kadıköy is potancially rich to study on
such a subject.
T
flow consist of 40 lines were drawn between each axe to reveal the
congestion [pressure] areas. The darker areas [more lines overlap
on each other] shows the spatial congestion points.
To percieve this overlaped and loosened areas in the site [after the
congestion mapping was made], a lofted topography was created.
This topography basicly shows the peaks and bottoms of this
“congestion/tension”. This visualisation and modeling work will be
highly useful in the forthcoming phases of the project.
A
ocial stratification is a concept involving the "classification of people
into groups based on shared socio-economic conditions ... a relation-
al set of inequalities with economic, social, political and ideological
dimensions." When differences lead to greater status, power or
privilege for some groups over the other it is called Social Stratifica-
tion. [Chris Barker, Cultural Studies: Theory and Practice.]
S ictional lines drawn in both directions in each 150 meters and
occasionaly a grid was created. This grid has been used to create
equally selected points for a research. The research is about the
rental values of real estates. This issue was selected as a parameter
because the most important difference between these stratums are
economical capibilities. So, on each intersection of the grid, 2
residential and 1 commercial real estate advertisement from
selected websites were investigated. [The real estate ads were
search by the nearest street addresses.] The overall of the rents are
calculated.
381 real estate rental costs from 127 points were used. The overall of
3 values for each point was calculated. Then a vertical line was drawn
to each point which the elevation values of each line was the same
with the overall of 3 rental costs. The lines create an equalizer-like
look. Finally, the lines were connected to each other with a horizon-
tal line (connecting the top points of the lines), and the a topography
of “rental costs-based stratification”. After gathering the quantitative
data from real estate websites and assinging them to the right points
on the grid, we are able to create a new topography of “Economical
Values” of the site. This aspect is able to show us the peaks and
valleys that occur because of the axes crossing throught the site.
[which are creating the actual stratums eventually]
F
he topography of Congestion Mapping was the very first study on the
specified area [Kadıköy]. This study revealed the spatial compression
points. As said before, these points/areas will be used to create
focusing points when they will be overlapped with the other study of
“Stratum Topography. This second study is aiming to reveal the
socio-economical differencies between specified stratums, which is
called “Stratum Topography”. After a quantitative research, the
values of this research interpreted into digital platform to be
visualised.
T
wo main topograhies were created with cognitive and quantitative
researches and experiments. The core point of the further study is to
bind them in to one piece of data. To make this possible, the 3D
visualised models of these two topographies will be overlapped. With
this overlapping process, eventually, we will reach to a point where
the quantitative and qualitative data will be bind to each other, and
show the designer a path to be focused on. This area which these
studies will show is going to be the site that the “Open University”
idea will be spatialize.
T
[Building#1] Receiver
This building has a facade to Bagdat Street, so it has a potantial of
welcoming public crowd and increasing visibility. Also, it will contain
more public features and most of the “Open” functions will be
designed here. [Like public studying areas, multi-functional hall,
digital library etc.]
[Building#2] Connector
These volumes will function as a binder between two main function
buildings. It will contain supportive functions like a studio for record-
ing online classes. It also has a hall like the other two building for
multi-purpose activities and for the pedestrians that are just passing
throught the railway.
[Building#3] Feeder
To become temporary, a routine activity cycle is a must for a universi-
ty which has a goal of being “Open”. Therefore both permanent and
temporary visitors and inhabitants should be present. This “Feeder”
building contains accomodation and management facilities for
student and civils.
he core theoretical aspect of the “Open University” idea is to reveal
both spatial and socio-economical borders of the city and be a
negotiator between two sides of these fictional borders.
In that case, a couple of cognitive and quantitative researchs and
experiments was made which were told in the previous parts of the
project. These researchs and experiments can be listed as; “a
congestion mapping” and “a stratification topography”. [for the given
site, Kadıköy] These two studies had given us two different ”topogra-
phies” as a product. And the overlapping parts of these topographies
had given us the actual areas that the idea of “Open University”
should focus on. [The details of this process was explained in
previous parts.]
So the selection of this area where the “Open University” idea is going
to be spatialize, comes from these studies.

herefore, the designs must be distributed and particaled to both
sides. Particals of the design are also going to be connected to each
other both physically and conceptually. The selected urban pieces
are down-sized to 4 major areas. These 4 areas were seen as future
project areas in Kadıköy. But the main concept is to be a distributed
design. Solid function areas and circulation paths are the main
ingredients of all ideas and designs.
Tour main areas were created after the intersecting process. The core
idea of the whole project is to create a challenge to dissolve both the
physical and socio-economic differencies occuring inside of the site.
These 4 main areas are the very first in the priority order. To bind
these differencies, the proposals must be work like an osmos
process. They will create a hole between stratums and let them flow
into each other.

HASKÖYHOLOGRAPHY
Humanity is seeking methods to widen its knowledge from the
very beginning of its own history. Technology and development
were improving owing to the mutualist relationship between
“Education” and “Production”. In the 21st century, these two
lines were united to form a more complex concept.
Hasköy Holography Center, will combine the settled production
habits of Hasköy district and combine them with contemporary
technologies of 21st century. It’s concept relies on the power of
“one nation, one country” notion of globalism. While feeding
from local production processes, this center will create a
nonlocal space by the usage of hologram technology. From all
over the world, every kind of minds who were specialized in
many disiplines of production and education, will be transferred
to this center to meet with local receivers from Istanbul, with
the hologram technology.

CAKAABANDONED RURAL SCHOOL
The first phase of Revitalizing Abandoned Rural Schools Project,
‘Çaka Design Workshop’ took place in Ordu, on June 15-16-17.
The workshop, which brought together 24 participants from
different disciplines such as architecture, landscape architec-
ture, urban planning, civil engineering and sociology, was held
on the shore of Çaka Village.
The three day workshop helped to collect necessary information
and to produce more than enough ideas to turn into a concrete
project. Throughout the process, we have tried to enrich our
initiative with new participants and contacted universities,
NGO’s and private companies in order to create a management
model for the new school buildings. We have created at
calendar so that the buildings will be used and maintained
throughout the year.
The overall project is planned to be implemented in the summer
of 2013, after defining the strategies for intervention with the
existing and possible new participants. If the funding can be
guaranteed, the workshop will invite more then 50 volunteers
from different parts of Turkey.

DISOBEDIENCEARCHIVE
“Disobedience Archive” is an ongoing, multi-phase video
archive and platform of discussion that deals with the relation-
ship between artistic practices and political action. Exhibition
design and spatial concept creation was made for the exhibition
that take place in Salt Beyoglu, from April 22 to June 15 2014,
curated by Marco Scotini and Andris Brinkmanis.
“Disobedience Archive brings a comprehensive map of social
conflict and a network of contemporary activism to town.” said
the curator, Marco Scotini.
The people of İstanbul recently demonstrated in a formidable
struggle to defend Gezi Park and to embrace their right to the
city. To propose any display idea for such an archive brings
along a certain susceptibility that has no option but to deal with
the aftermath of recent local acts of disobedience in İstanbul. In
order to provide a unique and presentative display, while
avoiding directly referencing the “Park,” our design basis
derives from the tension of two notions: individualism and
collectivism.

hese days, “home” refers to the individualization of society and the
changing context of acting, revolting and resisting today. While on the
other hand, as Constantin Petcou and Doina Petrescu said “at a micro
scale, capitalist space is drowned under promotional pressure that is
continually carried out by all communication means and media (mail,
telephone, television, internet), transforming the home into an
absolute center of a consumerist culture of the ephemeral. All
objects are disposable; they are no longer recycled or repaired by
oneself.”
Scotini’s project reveals the power of collectivism and defines a
self-positioning against capitalist space and consumerist culture,
while documenting and archiving. For this very reason, it is vital to
emphasize the power of collectivism both through the display idea of
the archive and within the overall process.
In the meantime, Architecture for All, by its nature, seizes upon a
collective way of thinking and promotes participatory design
processes in its activities. For the display of Disobedience Archive at
SALT Beyoğlu, Architecture for All concentrates its energy on
seeking a compelling design concept, which stresses the dichotomic
nature of individualism and collectivism, in other words home and
urban space.
We anticipated that this contradiction could be best expressed
through the articulation of recycling and constant disposal. Digging
through the inventory of SALT, we came up with a proposition to
reuse existing furniture and turn the fragments of an idle archive into
something fresh. We were attentive to the need to provide soft
material for a comfortable environment. This created a home-like
atmosphere, which eventually eases the conscious act of video
watching.
T
he aim of the design is to get beyond a level of installation and make
the exhibition material to be perceived as distributed knowledge
around the world. To provide a full realization and sensation of the
material, “home” as a metaphor is preferred as the basis of our
design instead of a direct metaphor of the park. “Home” refers to the
individualisation of the society and the changing context of acting,
revolting and resisting today. The whole acts, directly or indirectly
related to the “Park”, happen to be inbetween these two polars,
individualism and collectivism. The goal of the design is to transmit
this polarity into the exhibition space.
T
oft Material | Usage of soft material is important if the video archive
is to be watched. The aim is to create a comfortable and relaxing
environment where the viewer will feel like at home and watch the
archive from his/her television (ref. b) This is actually a metaphor of
the distribution of information through a visual media. As the viewer
is provided a comfortable environment, he/she can concentrate to
the videos.
Revolution will be Televised | As we look back to many revolutions,
the information was distorted by the mainstream media. People have
found or created different communication methods and television is
not on of the methods of information distribution. This time
revolution will be televised and every disobedience can be watched
through the exhibition via TV.
S euse | It is important to reuse the materials of former exhibitions by
SALT. It is an analogy of the evolution of daily materials into function-
al objects during the demonstrations and actions. Current seats from
the Salt inventory were re-used in the design to match the idea.
Blending | Even though the variety of the exhibition materials orients
the design to be devided into specific spaces for each kind of article,
as to represent the “Park” during demonstrations and actions, whole
space was designed as 1 big exhibition field. The presentation of
paper materials, objects and videos will be combined to create a
multi-layered experience.

ACCORDIONWORKSHOP
Accordion was a workshop held through the EASA 2013
workshop series in Zuzemberk, Slovenia for 15 days with a team
of multinational design students.
The main goal is to experience the possibilities of wood material
by practice and to build two different structures. The design and
practice processes were held simultaneously throught the
workshop. Different tools from digital to physical were experi-
enced and applied on wood. As a final representation, a movie
covering the whole creation process was screened and an
exhibition was held in the ancient castle of Zuzemberk.

he workshop begined with the process of drawing studies, to
embrace with the possibilities of the wood material. Drawings were
overlaped with the shadow experiments done with basic connections
between wooden sticks. Before working with the actual scale woods,
miniature scaled sticks were used to understand the nature of the
material.
T
he workshop’s final proposals were two installations inside the
ancient castle of Zuzemberk. On of them was an interior structure
which can be modified by the surrounding users. In stretchs and
expands on demand.
The other installation was in a cloud form to cover the yard outside.
Plenty of woods were bended to create a triangle-like module. Then
these modules were binded to each other to create a 3D sense of the
space. To bend the wooden sticks, first they were boiled in a large
water tank till they were flexible enough. Then they were bended by
hand to reach to the expected shape. Lastly, they were dried in the
sun to fix the bended shape.
The whole workshop process contained many layers of practicing,
experimenting, usage of digital and physical tools and teamwork.
