Introduction
Our idea: to introduce a 3D printing service within the library
Our purpose: to provide our patrons with a new and up-to-the-minute service
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
Why this service?
On campus but not accessible to everyone
The Library wanted to provide this service for all members of the UQ community
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
So, where to begin?
Seek approval from Library Executive
Road trips to visit other providers
Internet searches
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
What did we learn?
One machine is not enough!
for a continuous, reliable service to be offered, at least 2 machines are needed
Individual print jobs are the way to go because…
Malfunctions occur Multiple job lots, multiple failures
Time component alert
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
Other investigations
Internet searches revealed most of the university libraries offering the service were located in the USA, from their webpages we learned:
Various ways of costing the service Methods for submitting requests Popular software and file types Methods of payment Who was allowed access to the machine Conditions of use
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
What printer do we buy?
Our selection criteria:
1. Operating costs – the price of printing
can impact the success of the service
2. Reliability – maximum uptime
Timing is (nearly) everything
3. Ease of use – we aren’t all “tech-heads”
4. Support – “Who you gonna call?”

How do we process orders?
How much will it cost?$5.00 processing fee includes checking for :
• Design errors
• Scale
• Amount of infill (internal material)
• A print preview
+ 10 cents/gram for materials
….let’s drop the materials fee
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
“Taking orders from students”
How do we get the orders?
Plan A: digital files on USB + paper form
…WHERE did you hand that in….?????
Plan B: upload the file with an online order
forms

Training for Staff
User Manual – read the manual…or at
least the cheat sheet
Lynda.com - video training courses
Using 3D modelling software
3D printing basics
Tips on operating Makerbot printers
Learn by doing - break it, fix it, get your
hands dirty!
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
Training for Staff
Skills gained: Understand the printer
Optimum results: size, resolution and position
Troubleshoot:
Was it the model?
Was it the printer?
Was it the user?
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
Information Sessions
Learn about new and exciting technology
Examples from:
Architecture Engineering
Medicine Archaeology
Models to play with…and break
A live demonstration of printing
Place an order for free!
ALIA National Library and Information Technicians' Symposium, Sept 2015
Questions & Answers
Will printing be restricted to course work?
How long does it take?
What about copyright infringement?
Does it apply in this case?
Can we reuse the off cuts and waste?
Will we print guns for the students?
* No Government frontbenchers turned up for Q&A…
