KEYNOTE: “I Need a Wife!” At every level of government, the story remains stubbornly the same: Women are un-der-represented, and often require a lot of convincing to get involved. Annabel Crabb argues that if women in politics got the same kinds of spouses that men traditionally do, it might be a different story. Research Fellow, UniSA:’Raising the bar on environmental stewardship’ The release of greenhouse gases as a result of human activities over the past 250 years has warmed the land and the oceans, made the sea water more acidic, melted ice and caused global sea levels to rise by almost 20 cm. In South Australia very hot days and nights have increased. Annual rainfall in the Adelaide region has decreased by 20 - 40 mm and evaporation has increased by up to 100 mm per year, a trend that results in less available water for plants, animals and humans. The fire danger season has increased in length and intensity. As greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise the impacts will intensify. The native fauna and flora of the region are highly sensitive to climate changes. In addition, widespread urban, agricultural and industrial development has led to exten-sive vegetation clearance, inappropriate fire regimes, pollution, water extraction, weeds and pest animals. This presentation considers the likely impacts of a changing climate on the environment and discusses how we need to raise the bar on environ-mental stewardship to ensure that the negative impacts are reduced and the environ-ment has the support required to adapt to the coming changes.

1:30-2:15pm Speaker 3– KEVIN OSBORN, Director AICD SA ‘Getting women on board’

Gender diverse boards are integral to better financial performance and improved governance, align with Australia’s economic imperatives and satisfy community and shareholder expectations. The global business case for more women on boards and in leadership roles is overwhelming. It no longer needs to be proven and debated, but believed and acted upon. This will require a significant shift in corporate culture and in the attitudes and behaviors of many who occupy positions of power. Kevin will talk about how and why women should ‘get on board’.
