Warford, in 1930, decided thatmore resistance to wear could be built intotreads if ground tire cord fabric could properlybe compounded into rubber. After much testingthe correct formula was found. Sen-ator Prescott Bush (R-Conn.) got the letterstogether ... Bush was the USCA presi-dent when Joe was hired . . . That was alucky day for golf and the USCA ... Joehas been of incalcuable value to the game... When he's been in a tough spot - andthere have been plenty of them in his 25USCA years - he always has thought ofthe good of the game and the golfers, rath-er than about what's good for Joe . . .There have been times when that attitudedidn't get him any votes as America'sSweetheart but everybody's got to sayJoe always stood up as an honorable gen-tleman and thorough sportsman . . . Hehas been right in the difficult decision awhole lot oftener than he has been wrong... That's better than par for humans.
