Alfred Gregory: From Everest to BlackpoolTRANSCRIPT
“I photographed the silence on Everest.
It is no longer there.”
FROM EVEREST TO BLACKPOOL
For many of us, the image of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reaching the top of Mount Everest is indelibly printed in our minds. When climbing was without the mod cons of our century, these vivid images evoke a sense of accomplishment and a time when reaching great heights was for the immortal.Today we can only marvel at the sense of achievement. In 1953 Alfred Gregory ‘Greg’ was chief photographer with the triumphant British team that took Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to the summit of Everest. There he took spectacular photographs that record not only the human struggle to conquer the Himalaya but also the once-pristine beauty of the world’s highest mountain. Each photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but a sense of spirit- superb in their clarity and character, and familiar to millions throughout the world. As he once stated: “The high peaks on earth are lovely beyond description, too lovely perhaps to portray in photographs, but on an expedition they are the props, the background scenery to human endeavour.”
Surprisingly, given his great body of work from the Himalayas, so well depicted at this exhibition, Alfred Gregory always felt his best work was of Blackpool in the ‘60s, his home town for many years. In this body of work, a mix of stunning black and white and colour images, we see beehive hairdos, Teddy boys, beaches crowded with day visitors and a depiction of fun times now faded. Greg went on to photograph people and places from every corner of the globe. In all there is something incredibly romantic and carefree from a different era.
With each photograph the printing is impeccable, the composition classically balanced, and the observation as sharp and kindly as that of any of the great photographic masters. With epic landscapes, iconic imagery and a sense of breathtaking beauty, this exhibition captures those short-lived moments when ordinary people, objects and places become extraordinary.
