Cinematography Master ClassKeith Partridge (Touching the Void) is an award-winning BBC cameraman and Director of Photography. He has significant experience shooting natural history, adventure and cultural stories in remote and extreme places. Keith is also an educator and communicator, and has taught the adventure filmmaking workshop at Banff for the past decade. In this class, Keith will be using the BBC's iconic Human Planet series as a case study for examining the HD production workflow necessary to bring a world-class TV series to the screen. Introduction by Fritz Mueller. Location: Old Fire Hall.

This workshop is a must for actors looking to work on film productions in the Yukon. Ben Ratner has starred in Carl Bessai’s Fathers & Sons, Chris Haddock’s Da Vinci’s City Hall and Bruce Sweeney’s Last Wedding and was awarded the 2001 Film Can Best Actor award. Ben operates Haven Studio for actors in Vancouver, BC. Ben also wrote and directed Down River, screening at ALFF 2015.

Micro-Budget FilmmakingOne million dollars or less generally falls into the category of a micro-budget feature film. A number of successful films in this category have been released over the past few years in Canada. Maureen BradleyDirector, Two 4 One

Award-winning gender-queer filmmaker, Maureen Bradley has made over forty short films that have screened internationally. Maureen developed Two 4 One through the NSI’s Features First Program. She won a Leo Award for directing the Best Web Series for Freshman’s Wharf and has won awards for her short films Queer Across Canada, Go! Dyke, Go! and Forever.

James BrownProducer, Mostly Harmless Productions/Down River

James Brown is a film producer based in Vancouver, BC. His producing credits include the multi-award winning drama Down River and the Leo Award-winning film Sisters & Brothers. Currently, James is working on several projects including the first feature from writer/director Kathleen Hepburn called Never Steady, Never Still.

Stéphane Cardin VP, Industry and Public Affairs, Canada Media Fund

Stéphane Cardin has over fifteen years of experience in the film and television industry. He is Vice President of Industry and Public Affairs with the Canada Media Fund. Mr. Cardin maintains an ongoing dialogue with industry and government stakeholders, leads the development of policies and programs, and reinforces the positioning of the CMF within the industry. He has worked for the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office (CAVCO) and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Gavin Crawford Actor, Two 4 One

Gavin Crawford, is an award-winning actor and among Canada’s most sought-after comedic performers. Originally from Alberta, Gavin has worked with Toronto’s The Second City and appeared in 8 seasons of This Hour Has 22 Minutes to much critical acclaim both for his performance and writing. CBC aired the pilot Gavin Crawford’s Wild West which was nominated for five Canadian Screen Awards and awarded the CSA for Best Writing in a Comedy Program.

Suzanne Crocker Director, All the Time in the World

Suzanne Crocker arrived in Dawson City, Yukon twenty-two years ago as a family doctor. She switched careers to filmmaker in 2009. All The Time In The World represents Crocker’s feature film directing debut. At its World Premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival 2014, All The Time In The World won the Audience Award for Most Popular Canadian Documentary.

Michelle Daly Senior Director, CBC Comedy

As Senior Director of CBC Comedy, Michelle Daly leads the team responsible for managing the creative development and production of CBC Television’s slate of comedic programming. Michelle joined the CBC as Executive in Charge of Production in 2011, and has overseen such comedies as Schitt's Creek, Mr D., This Hour Has 22 Minutes and The Rick Mercer Report. Michelle is also the Executive Producer for the CBC's new online comedy channel, Punchline.

Simon D’Amours Producer, World Wild Media

Simon D’Amours is the protagonist and co-producer of his debut television series Hors des sentiers battus which follows him as he meets with Yukon francophones. The 13-part documentary series will be broadcast on unis.ca. Simon has produced videos for national television, as well as commercial and private clients in Western Canada. Simon co-produced the short documentary Share the Road.

John Dippong Regional Director, Industry Promotion, Telefilm Canada

John Dippong joined Telefilm Canada in 1997 after having been involved in feature film production, film festival organization and programming. He has taken on roles of increasing responsibility at Telefilm, including Director, Industry Promotion–Western Region. John is responsible for identifying and implementing regional strategies, partnerships and special initiatives, which respond to Telefilm Canada’s business development objectives to build a vibrant audiovisual industry in Western Canada.

Kevin Eastwood Producer, Optic Nerve Films

Kevin Eastwood is a Gemini Award-winning producer and director. Most recently he directed Emergency Room: Life and Death at VGH, a documentary series that took an unprecedented look inside Vancouver’s busiest ER. Kevin’s previous credits include the biopic Elijah; the cult zombie-comedy, Fido; and the Charles Wilkinson documentary Oil Sands Karaoke (ALFF 2014).

Robert Hardy Senior Vice President & Head of Development, Force Four Entertainment

Robert Hardy spent nearly a decade as a broadcaster working at CBC and CTV, including four years heading CTV’s western development office in Vancouver, where he oversaw the development  and production of dozens of shows including series, movies of the week, documentaries and alternative programming. Robert is also an experienced writer and producer of television and digital media, and got his start writing and directing award-winning commercials & developing consumer and business brands.

Daniel Hogg Producer, Two 4 One

Daniel Hogg won a Leo Award for producing the web series Freshman’s Wharf, earned another four nominations, and won the 2012 NSI Drama Prize to write and produce the award-winning short Floodplain. With Two 4 One behind him, Daniel is in production on his second feature, The Devout, a spiritual thriller with a sci-fi twist.

Andrew HuculiakDirector, Violent

Andrew Huculiak is a gifted filmmaker and a quarter of Vancouver-based Amazing Factory Productions. While he spends most of his time working to further his career as the drummer for We Are The City, Andrew retains a passion for film and is the director, co-writer and composer of the feature film Violent.

Joel Thomas Hynes Actor and writer, Cast No Shadow

Newfoundlander Joel Thomas Hynes is the award-winning author of novels Down to the Dirt and Right Away Monday, a chapbook, a collection of poetic non-fiction and numerous acclaimed stageplays. Hynes has also performed principle roles for television and film including Down to The Dirt, Book of Negroes, Crackie, Hatching Matching and Dispatching, Republic of Doyle, Re-Genesis and Cast No Shadow, which is a feature film adaptation of his novella Say Nothing Saw Wood.

Stéphane Lafleur Director, Tu dors Nicole

Stéphane Lafleur is a filmmaker, musician and editor. His first feature Continental, a Film Without Guns, had its premiere at the Venice Festival, while Familiar Grounds won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Berlin Festival. Stéphane Lafleur also edited the films Monsieur Lazhar and Le démantèlement. He’s the lead singer of the Québec folk band Avec pas d’casque. Tu dors Nicole is his third film.

Michelle Latimer Festival Curator and Streel Films

Michelle Latimer (Métis/Algonquin) is an award-winning actor and filmmaker.  Her short film The Underground premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, received the Best Short Film Award at ImagineNATIVE Film Festival and was featured as part of Telefilm's "Not Short on Talent" spotlight at Cannes Festival 2014.  In 2013, she was named among Playback Magazine's "10 To Watch." As a curator, Michelle has programmed for the Hot Docs, Victoria International and ImagineNATIVE Film Festivals and is an advisor to Winnipeg's Cinematheque. 

Nicole Lawson Director of Development, Force Four Entertainment

Nicole Lawson joined Force Four Entertainment in 2007 and works closely with independent producers, writers, and her in-house team to shape and pitch new TV series to Canadian, American and international broadcasters. Projects she managed from conception to green light include 10 one-hour episodes of the factual series Million Dollar Neighborhood for OWN, 26 episodes of the half hour lifestyle series Urban Suburban for HGTV, 13 half-hour episodes of the competition series Family Cook Off for Food Network, and 10 one-hour episodes of the factual series Village On A Diet for CBC.

Maureen LevittCreative Development Representative, Super Channel

Maureen Levitt is the creative development representative for British Columbia and the Yukon, for Super Channel. Previous to this she was Western Regional Manager and Commissioning Editor for Vision TV. Maureen worked with regional producers from Western and Northern Canada to develop and pre-sale a large portfolio of documentary and drama. Maureen was also acted as consulting producer for such films as Culture Jam: Hijacking Commercial Culture (2001), The Corporation (2003) and ScaredScared (2004).

Joanne LevyProducer/Head of Convergent Content, Buffalo Gal Pictures

Joanne Levy is an executive and consultant with extensive experience in the broadcast and production industries. As Head of Television Production at Buffalo Gal Pictures she is working to increase the company’s television production activity. During her career in Canadian broadcasting Joanne has worked as a TV news reporter; independent producer; communications consultant; and, for 10 years, senior broadcast executive responsible for commissioning original, independently produced Canadian programs and contributing to CRTC applications for new broadcast entities and renewal of existing broadcast outlets.

Chris McNutt Manager, Northwestel Community Cable TV

Chris McNutt is the Manager of Northwestel Community Cable TV where he programs, produces and co-produces a wide variety of content for channels in Whitehorse, YT and Yellowknife, NT. Chris is also the current President of Screen Production Yukon, the screen-media industry association that is active in training and development for Yukon-based screen-media professionals.

Iris Merritt Film Officer, Yukon Film & Sound Commission

Iris began her career in film and television quite by accident when her bottomless knowledge of Yukon and its history landed her gigs providing locations expertise to visiting film and television crews during the Klondike Gold Rush Centennials (1990-1998). Realizing she had found her passion, she started working for the Yukon Film & Sound Commission in 1999. As the Film and Media Advisor, Iris oversees the management of five film funding programs available to support film and television projects and training in Yukon.

Keith Partridge Director of Photography

Capturing the essence of adventure in more than 60 extreme films has taken cameraman and filmmaker Keith Partridge to some of the world's most hostile and spectacular environments. Over the past 20 years, his work has been shown on the BBC, Discovery, Channel 4, C5, ITV, National Geographic, Pathé Films, and 20th Century Fox. He has lectured on filmmaking to the Royal Television Society, HFF in Berlin, BAFTA, International Conferences, and the Royal Geographical Society. His written articles have appeared in many of the UK’s climbing and outdoor magazines. His book The Adventure Game charting his experiences in filming all over the planet is to be published in June 2015.

Geoff Pevere Film Critic and Author

Geoff Pevere has a long career in reviewing, writing, broadcasting and teaching. He was the host of CBC Radio’s Prime Time, Film International on TVOntario, and co-hosted Rogers Television’s Reel to Real. He reviewed movies for twelve years on CTV’s Canada AM and at the Toronto Star for ten. Pevere has published several books (Mondo Canuck, Gods of the Hammer) and is a regular film critic for The Globe and Mail.

Carmen PollardPicture Editor

Carmen Pollard is an award-winning picture and story editor with a background in fine arts and visual effects. Since graduating from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1997, she has been working on feature films, performance-based works and television productions. Her credits include everything from festival-circuit documentaries to multi-million dollar Hollywood blockbusters, screening internationally and airing throughout North America. Carmen has been nominated for a prime-time Emmy, a Gemini and several Leos. In addition to her work in film and television, Carmen has taught and mentored elementary to undergraduate film students in the Kootenays, Vancouver and the Yukon.

Etienne Proulx Video Editor

Etienne Proulx is an assistant-editor, editor and technical consultant on a diverse range of projects in cinema and television in Montreal. For the last 10 years he has been involved in projects (documentary and fiction) including the award winning kids show Bookaboo (CBC) and the feature length animation film The Little Prince (in theatres in 2015). He is passionate about new technologies and gives training on these new tools.

Ben Ratner Director, Down River

Ben Ratner is an award-winning actor, writer and director. He wrote, directed and co-starred in the feature film Moving Malcolm, which won many film festival awards. As a director Ratner has helmed the popular TV series Robson Arms. A protégé of renowned acting teacher and author Ivana Chubbuck, Ratner is a teacher to many of Canada’s top actors, and currently offers scene-study classes at his Haven Studio in Vancouver.

Naomi Snieckus Actor, Two 4 One

An actor, writer, improviser, voice artist, director, Naomi Snieckus is a regular on CBC’s hit comedy, Mr. D (Canadian Screen Award and Canadian Comedy Award winner). She is an alumnus of The Second City Toronto where she wrote and performed in five hit shows. Naomi is a founding member and Co-Artistic Director of the 5-time Canadian comedy award-winning troupe The National Theatre of the World.

Dan Sokolowski Producer, Dawson City International Short Film Festival Director, Ghosts of the Joe Henry

Dan Sokolowski lives in Dawson City and is the producer of the Dawson City International Short Film Festival. His films have been shown at many film festivals and events around the world. Dan has worked on over 40 independent productions as cinematographer, animator, assistant director and editor. He also has taught courses in 16mm filmmaking, animation and studio arts.

John SouthworthSinger-songwriter

John Southworth is one of Canada’s most distinctive and iconoclastic music artists, respected for forging ahead with his own unique brand of music-making, while garnering high praise for his inimitable contribution. His songs have been covered by or written for Canadian artists Sarah Slean, Buck 65, Martin Tielli, Veda Hille, Hawksley Workman and Jully Black. John has also authored a children’s book, Daydreams for Night with illustrations by artist David Ouimet. 

Christian Sparkes Director, Cast No Shadow

A native of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Christian Sparkes was one of five directors chosen from across Canada to participate in the CFC Directors’ Lab in Toronto. He has directed five short films, which have won awards and been screened at festivals across the world. Cast No Shadow is his debut feature.

Jennifer SpenceActor, Down River

Jennifer has had recurring roles on The 4400, Killer Instinct, and Da Vinci’s Inquest. She has had supporting roles in several movies of the week, among them Write and Wrong with Kirstie Alley. Other memorable projects include guest starring on CBC’s Northern Town. She is presently gearing up to resume her regular series role on the award-winning Continuum, which is in its third season. It is a role for which she was also nominated for a Leo Award for Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series.

Andrew Stratis Co-proprietor, Headless Owl Records

Whitehorse-based boutique record label Headless Owl Records. In the roughly two and half years since the inception of the label, Andrew has worked with such Canadian artists as The Burning Hell, Michael Feuerstack, Jon McKiel, and more. His various duties within the label include organizing all projects from inception to the finished product, cat wrangling, and some light typing. Currently, Headless Owl is working on projects with Toronto’s By Divine Right and songwriter Nick Ferrio. Andrew got his start in the music industry many years ago by agreeing to book concerts for bands touring to the Yukon, having little knowledge of how to pull that off.

Julia Szucs Producer, Meltwater Media

Julia jumped into documentary filmmaking in 2004, on a grueling 500km kayak journey in Canada’s High Arctic, for the creation Abandoned in the Arctic. Catching the bug for remote wilderness filmmaking, she and her partner, Steven Smith, co-founders of Meltwater Media, took on two committing Arctic documentaries: Arctic Cliffhangers (2009), tracing of 35 years of research on arctic seabirds as harbingers of climate change, and Vanishing Point (2012) a first-person narrative on cultural adaptation through the eyes of an Inuit shaman’s direct descendant. Julia has been involved with the Banff Mountain Film Festival since 2008, and is currently consulting for northern documentary productions based in the Yukon.

Shirley Vercruysse Executive Producer, National Film Board of Canada, Pacific & Yukon Studio

Shirley Vercruysse is the Executive Producer of the National Film Board of Canada, Pacific & Yukon Studio, based in Vancouver BC. Prior to joining the NFB in February 2014, she was independent film and television producer based in Calgary Alberta. Credits include; Fubar II, the first Canadian film to open the high profile 'Midnight Madness' section of the Toronto International Film Festival; Radiant City, winner of the Genie Award for Best Theatrical Documentary & Waydowntown winner of the prestigious Toronto City Award for Best Canadian film at Toronto International Film Festival.

Kyle Tingley Writer, This Hour has 22 Minutes, The Gavin Crawford Show

Kyle Tingley has been a television writer and showrunner for 15 years. Together with Gavin Crawford he co-created, co-wrote and was executive producer for 3 seasons of the award-winning The Gavin Crawford Show for The Comedy Network/CTV. Kyle spent 3 seasons as a writer for CBC's flagship show, This Hour has 22 Minutes and served as head writer for an additional two. Winner of a Writers Guild of Canada Award and Canadian Comedy Award for writing, Kyle has been nominated for several Gemini Awards. In 2014, he received the Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing in a Comedy for his work on Gavin Crawford’s Wild West, as well as a CSA nomination for Best Comedy Program for CBC's Gavin Crawford’s Wild West.
