Background and History Headlines
Pioneers in Tank Cleaning
Both Gunclean and Toftejorg are trademarks well known in the shipping industry both has a
history which goes back to the beginning of tank cleaning in the 1950's and 60's. The two former
competitors merged their marine and offshore business into one company and continue now as
Alfa Laval Tank Equipment.
The selection of a specific machine may vary with the type and size of the vessel/tank to be
cleaned, what to clean from, and the purpose with the cleaning. Sometimes the operator has
different valuations and motivation for a particular selection. Nevertheless, the operator is
expecting a specific cleaning result. Additionally, saving time, cleaning flow, installation costs,
maintenance cost, the simplicity in operating the equipment and consumption of chemical
detergents, may all be of importance to the operator.
Each installation is tailor made and assures that the correct type and number of machines is
installed. Moreover, that the location of the machines gives the optimal cleaning result and
complies with all regulatory stipulations. This evaluation and relating engineering is a Service
Alfa Laval is offering.

Tank Cleaning – Why tank clean?
Tank cleaning
Efficiency in motion
Tank cleaning is a paradox: the most difficult thing to obtain
can be nothing at all.
In cargo tanks with corrugations, stringer platforms and other
obstructions, it can be difficult to achieve a surface where no
residue remains. Yet Alfa Laval’s Gunclean Toftejorg solutions
offer a truly perfect clean.
The dynamics of tank cleaning
Alfa Laval’s dynamic Gunclean Toftejorg tank cleaning nozzles
outperform static nozzles by creating an optimized helical or
criss-cross spray pattern. Reaching the whole tank in a fraction
of the time, they eliminate not only residue, but also hassle,
expense and the need to supplement with manual cleaning.
An effective installation is ensured with our unique G-Pass
software, which outdoes shadow diagrams by creating a
rotatable 3-D image of the tank’s obstructions.
Risk-reducing innovation
Our latest nozzles offer further improvements on our already
groundbreaking cleaning technology. With a patented
hysteresis clutch that prevents false starts, our i40 and i65
series nozzles do away with a second shaft penetration. By
eliminating this potential source of leakage, they offer proof
that nothing can really be something.
Why tank clean?
Reasons to clean a tank
To remove cargo, sediments and gasses from the inside of the tank (bulkheads and tank
top/bottom), in order to:
• avoid remaining onboard (ROB) • avoid product cross contamination • maintain or improve heat transfer on heating coils • preserve storage capacity • make the tank safe for human entry

Tank design Challenges while tank cleaning
Every tank design has one or several different inner structures like stiffeners, piping, pumps,
ladders and many more. Many structures such as stiffeners and corrugations are designed to
keep the tank stable and able to hold cargo.
Common for all structures is the fact that they create shadows in the tank. The main thing about
tank cleaning is to define the number of TCM (Tank Cleaning Machines) that is necessary to
clean according to classification rules or owner requirements.
5
-
Why make Shadow Calculations?
Crude Oil Tankers
To prove to the classification societies that the tank is cleaned according to the IMO cow-rules
The shadow drawing is also helpful to the owner when he wants to know where corrosion might
occur
Chemical Tankers
To prove to the ship owner that the tank is cleaned sufficient to avoid cross contamination
G-Pass - Alfa Laval Engineering Service
With Alfa Laval’s unique computer system “G-Pass”, we can calculate your shadow diagrams so
accurately that you can judge the cleaning result in advance

How to choose the right Tank Cleaning Machine
There are 4 choices you need to consider when selecting the right Tank Cleaning Machine.
1. Type of Vessel
2. Single or Dual Nozzle system
Single nozzle:
- Helical cleaning pattern
- Slower tank coverage
- One hit all the time
- High impact
- Longer throw length
- Programmable = Pitch adjustment = Nozzle movement
in degrees per revolution
- Variable cleaning time – depending on pitch settings and
rotation speed of the cleaner nozzle
- Spot cleaning and area cleaning possible.
7
-
Dual nozzle:
- Criss-cross cleaning pattern
- Fast tank coverage, cycle or complete pattern
- Two hits all the time
- Less impact
- Variable cleaning time – depending on rotation speed
of the cleaning head
- Low total cleaning consumption
- Keep the tank sides and bottom under the cleaning hot
because of the criss-cross cleaning pattern.
3. Internal or External drive unit
Tank Cleaning Machines with external drive unit have speed adjustment,
Whereas Tank Cleaning Machines with internal drive unit have no speed adjustment.

Features and benefits
Hysteresis clutch
The patented clutch of the Gunclean
Toftejorg i40 D, which comprises a hysteresis
plate on one side and supermagnets on the
other, eliminates a shaft penetration between
the turbine and gearbox. Unlike a standard
magnetic clutch, in which two opposing
magnets must be synchronized, it will not slip
during water hammering – thus eliminating
false starts. The clutch works as a soft starter,
making sure that the tank cleaning machine
always begins to operate.
Easy speed adjustment
The nozzles are factory preset with a standard
rotational speed that is applicable for most
cleaning operations. To change the preset
speed, adjust the magnetic brake to regulate
nozzle rotation. Simply remove the gearbox
cover to access the magnet, then increase or
decrease the distance between the magnet
and the hysteresis plate to slow or accelerate
rotation.
No speed adjustment shaft
The patented hysteresis clutch does away with
speed adjustment at the turbine. This removes
the need for shaft penetration on the turbine
side, eliminating a potential source of seal
leakage and cross-contamination.
Optimized turbine
The turbine of the Gunclean Toftejorg i40 D is
specially designed for better power transmis-
sion, which contributes to increased machine
lifetime.
High-tech ceramics
Balls of high-tech, wear-resistant ceramics
have been used in the turbine construction.
These reduce friction in the gear system and
reduce the consumption of spare parts.
Isolated gearbox
The oil-free gearbox is located above deck and
can be removed without exposing the tank to
the atmosphere. This facilitates service.
Robust construction
The gearbox has a stronger construction than
previous tank cleaning machines and involves
fewer wear parts.

Gunclean Toftejorg i65 SSingle-nozzle tank cleaning machine
Alfa Laval’s Gunclean Toftejorg i65 S is a high-impact,
fully programmable tank cleaning machine with a
single nozzle. Developed to meet the toughest tank
cleaning requirements, it is the first tank cleaning
machine on the market to feature a hysterisis clutch
with built-in speed adjustment.
This innovative clutch construction is a substantial
improvement over standard magnetic clutches, as it
eliminates both slippage and the leakage risk of a
speed adjustment shaft. In combination with opti-
mized design and new, wear-resistant materials, it
makes the Gunclean Toftejorg i65 S a simple and
reliable choice for cost-effective operation.
Application
The Gunclean Toftejorg i65 S is designed for use in
fixed installations aboard chemical carriers, product
carriers and bulk carriers, as well as in offshore
applications. Its reliable operation and wear-resistant
design make it suitable for use in all types of tank
cleaning applications.
Features and benefits
Hysterisis clutch.
The Gunclean Toftejorg i65 S clutch comprises six
strong magnets and a hysterisis plate. Unlike a
standard magnetic clutch, in which two opposing
magnets must be synchronized, it will not slip during
water hammering – thus eliminating false starts.
The clutch works as a soft starter, making sure that
the tank cleaning machine always begins to operate.
Topside speed adjustment.
Speed can be adjusted above deck without changing
the drive media flow, simply by increasing or decreas-
ing the distance between the magnets and the hyste-
risis plate.
No speed adjustment shaft.
The hysterisis clutch does away with speed adjustment
at the turbine. This removes the need for a shaft pene-
tration on the turbine side, taking away a potential
source of seal leakage and cross contamination.
Optimized turbine.
The Gunclean Toftejorg i65 S turbine is specially
designed for better power transmission, which con-
tributes to increased machine lifetime.
High-tech ceramics.
Balls and plates of high-tech, wear-resistant ceramics
have been used in the turbine construction. These
reduce friction in the gear system and reduce the con-
sumption of spare parts.
Isolated gearbox.
The gearbox is located above deck and can be re-
moved without exposing the tank atmosphere. An
extra gearbox can be kept as a backup, if desired.
Robust construction.
The gearbox has a stronger construction than previ-
ous tank cleaning machines and involves fewer wear
parts.

Fixed Cargo Hold Cleaning Equipment
Gunclean Toftejorg 270FT Retractable Range
Cleaning the bulk cargo hold is one of the most challenging
jobs on board. Increasingly cargo hold cleaning must be
conducted during sea voyages because there are fewer
deckhands available for cleaning operations and shorter port
stays. In addition, ship owners and operators must comply
to more stringent safety and environmental regulations. To
prepare the cargo hold to take on the next cargo, the choice
of cargo hold cleaning equipment is essential to ship profit-
ability and safety.
Application
The Gunclean Toftejorg 270FT Retractable is a highly efficient
single-nozzle cargo hold cleaning machine designed to tackle
the toughest cleaning tasks on board pure bulk carriers and
ore-bulk-oil (OBO) carriers. It is suitable for use in all types of
cargo hold cleaning operations, thanks to its reliable operation
and wear-resistant design.
It is the first fixed cargo hold cleaning machine of its kind
that is available in two models for sideways, or swing-type,
retraction and for vertical retraction. This innovation enables
users to determine the best and most efficient cleaning
method to employ.
Unlike manual cargo hold cleaning machines that are both
labour-intensive and time-consuming, the Gunclean Toftejorg
270FT Retractable provides fully programmable, automated
cleaning that can be controlled by a single operator. Thorough
cleaning generally requires as little as three hours. This signifi-
cantly reduces vessel turnaround and increases profitability.
The Gunclean Toftejorg 270FT Retractable unit is part of a
comprehensive range of Alfa Laval equipment for keeping the
insides of tanks and storage holds clean.
Gunclean Toftejorg 270FT Retractable is available in two arrangements – the swing arm retraction model and vertical retraction model.
23
-
The change between parking- and operation position takes only
a few seconds with the included hand crank handle.
Operation
A flow of cleaning media is used to drive a turbine connected
to the gear unit. This then drives the cleaning head horizontally
while the nozzle moves vertically, directing the jet of cleaning
media in a helical pattern on the inside of the tank, for maxi-
mum coverage. Both pitch angle and rotation speed can be
adjusted topside during operation, making it easy to adjust the
cleaning cycle to match specific tank cleaning assignments.
Cleaning pattern
The nozzle performs a helical cleaning pattern by a slow verti-
cal movement of the nozzle while the cleaner head is rotating
in the horizontal plane. The power unit is designed to give
a tighter cleaning pattern in the bottom of the tank or hold,
where it is generally most needed.
Regulatory compliance
The Gunclean Toftejorg 270FT Retractable fixed cargo hold
cleaning machine meets the requirements of the International
Maritime Organization and all major classifications societies.
Options
•Ductpipe•Machinesupport•Liftingdevicewithchainblock
Benefits
•Faster turnaround. Cuts time between cargo changes to a few hours instead of days required by manual cleaning. This
minimizes cleaning costs and maximizes vessel utilization
since the hold can be cleaned during ballast trips.
•Safer operations. Reduces worker exposure to hazardous materials in the cargo hold since the operations are safely
handled by a single operator from on deck.
•Shorter cleaning cycle. Thoroughly cleans the cargo hold using minimal water, energy and cleaning fluid. This boosts
profitability and keeps environmental impact to a minimum.
•More eco-friendly. Minimizes exposure to hazardous materi-als in the cargo hold since the hatches are only opened for
cargo loading and unloading.
•Saves time. Eliminates the need to clean with portable pumps, hoses and other accessories.
•Alfa Laval know-how. Take advantage of over 50 years of hands-on experience and G-Pass, our unique software tool
thatvisualizesyourtank’sanglesandobstructionsin3D.Weconstantly innovate in ways to make cleaning more effective
and create lower lifecycle costs for your installation.

Alfa Laval can deliver all accessories, such as lifting device,
chain block and yoke required for a retrofit installation.
Swing arm. To prevent damage to the cleaner head during
cargo operations, the cargo hold cleaning machine is hinged
on a swivel coupling. Using a convenient hand crank, a single
operator can move the unit 90° from its parked position to
operational position and back again.
When the machine is in parked position, its sturdy steel hous-
ing protects it from salt water, inclement weather and cargo
grabs during loading and unloading. The unit may be installed
either through the deck or directly inside hatch cover in order
to avoid damage during cargo handling operations.

Vertical. Using the optional duct pipe, machine support
and lifting device with chain block, the cargo hold cleaning
machine is easily installed through a duct in the deck. The
crane helps lower the cleaner head into operational position in
the cargo hold and vertically lift it out of the hold into parked
position after use. This helps prevent damage to the cleaner
head during cargo operations.
This machine is a cost-effective solution for retrofitting bulk
carriers with highly efficient fixed cargo hold cleaning equip-
ment. Upgrading to a fixed system significantly reduces oper-
ating costs and the investment usually pays for itself within
two years or by one installed unit per cleaning.
Two models
A swing arm retractable model and a vertical retractable model are available. Both models can be controlled by a single operator
and conveniently stowed away when not in use.

part of the Gunclean Toftejorg Portable Tank Cleaning
System which covers a full range of equipment for
applications where a fixed installation is impossible,
complicated or too costly.
Application
Tanks, with difficult-to-clean inner structures, where the
shielded areas are complicated to reach or where the
nature of the product prevents the installation of fixed
installed tank cleaning machines, can be cleaned by
portable machines. Also tanks which are not often
cleaned and tanks placed remote from the pump and
water supply installation take advantage from the
portable tank cleaning machines.
Operation
A portable tank cleaning machine is arranged on a
flexible hose with embedded wires for electrostatic
deviation to earth. The portable tank cleaning machine is
lowered into the deck opening, then the Gunclean
Toftejorg Hose Saddle is to be placed on the deck
opening of the tank and the portable tank cleaning
machine is to be lowered to the required position in the

Handling description
The lifting of a unit can normally be made straight up.
For long units, lifting can be carried out as described
below.
1. Loosen the Gunclean Toftejorg unit attachment
to the deck and the valve and/or connecting pipe
section. Place the lifting tripod over the unit with
legs fully spread. Install the lifting sling under the
water inlet. Hoist the unit vertically about 2 metres
until the sling can be connected to the support wire.
Lower the machine slightly until hanging by the
support wire. Disconnect chain block hook.
2. Attach a clamp or put a sling around the Gunclean
Toftejorg main pipe slightly above the point of gravity.
3. Continue lifting until the units are fully clear of the
deck opening, manually keeping it supported to
prevent damage of the unit by hitting the edges of
the deck opening.
4. Lower unit onto deck or a trolley while manually
tilting it around to a horizontal position.
Installation is carried out in the opposite sequence.
Note. Supporting ropes should be attached to the
ring on top of the lifting tripod if being used in heavy
weather.
