Currently completing testing, performing patent search and seeking funding through Yale OCR.

Recent Projects Connecticut Coastal Resilience Plan Guilford, CT 2010-present

This project with The Nature Conservancy and Guilford, CT includes interactive climate change maps and a process of engagement to discuss vulnerability and possible land use planning solutions for coastal adaptation. Our approach includes adaptive designed experiments to preempt and expedite the conversion of coastal land towards more resilient land use programs including green infrastructure networks. We are seeking ways of expediting marsh migration through the modification of land (size, slopes, substrates) and vegetation (structure, species richness)?

Seaside Village Collective Stormwater Bioswales built in Bridgeport CT 2010-present

An ecologists, hydrologic chemist, landscape architect and engineer are addressing the vulnerable condition of Seaside Village through the construction of green infrastructure for coastal adaptation. Experiments are constructed in situ to study the performance of constructed wetland gardens for water quality and habitat value. The project is being built through a collaborative effort between the City of Bridgeport, Yale University, UCONN, USEPA, Groundwork and the Seaside Village community.

National Mall Design Competition, finalist Washington D.C. 2012

We worked with the AECOM and Snohetta Architecture Team and proposed to construct ephemeral wetlands and sound garden with constructed vernal pools and introduced amphibians (spring peepers and American toads) adjacent to the U.S. Botanical Garden. The sound garden is part of a larger vision for the re-habitation of the National Mall.

Museum of Modern Art Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream Rialto, CA 2011

As part of the Zago Architects Team, we proposed to use suburbia along the exurban fringe as sites for testing re-wilding using the zoological park as a suburban amenity. Re-wilding builds on continental conservation where large predators and keystone species cause “top-down” ecological (trophic) interactions, which are instrumental in maintaining ecosystem structure, resilience, and diversity.

Thermo-Scape Wetlands, preliminary patent (2011) New Haven, CT 2010-present

We are developing a constructed wetland ecosystem that functions as heat rejection technology to replace cooling towers. The wetland water can also irrigate landscapes for cultural, recreational and productive benefits and may be configured to moderate microclimates, create wildlife habitats and corridors, improve water quality, and sequester carbon.

Mill River Commercial and Industrial Area, developer friendly stormwater Prototypes 2010-2011 Fairhaven, CT

Developed prototype developer friendly green infrastructure for the Mill River commercial and industrial area working with the New Haven Economic Development Corporation and Utile Design. We proposed a ‘treatment train’ configuration to test and implement successful best management practices as a pilot project. The goal is to educate the City of New Haven about the benefits of alternative practices, to encourage developers to invest in sustainable ecological design, and to improve on the current lack of stormwater research on how BMPs work.

King Abdullah City of Atomic and Renewable Energy, masterplan 2010-2011

Working with Koetter | Kim and Associates, AECOM Design and Buro Happold, we developed the ecological design strategies for an energy conscious new city. We proposed to use grey water to activate a series of cultural, ecological and productive landscapes. Embracing the ancient tradition of wadi irrigation, we proposed to construct an irrigation armature or urban wadi system using sequential interlocking landscape patches that transition from public space functions to biological treatment and eventually to habitat enhancements. We build on the site attributes--in this case the wadi networks, the discrete watershed, and the surrounding desert --and couple this with technologies and with modeling, research and monitoring systems to provide a large-scale research site for sustainable urbanism. The irrigation and landscape patch system would rely on technology and infrastructure to create an adaptable apparatus that performs multiple tasks.

A Backyard Denitrification Demonstration Project for Homeowners: Addressing Nonpoint 2010 Pollution Reduction, New Haven, CT and the Quinnipiac River Watershed

As part of a grant for the Quinnipiac River Watershed This project focused on coastal and river’s edge property owners who can implement landscape practices that stem nonpoint source pollution to counteract the typical approach of a mowed and maintained lawn and high fertilizer and pesticide use. Given the private landowner interest in maintaining views along the river, as well as their power to ultimately select management practices, any workable solution must engage and accommodate these stakeholders. This project outlines the development of design for a riparian buffer research project that also functions as a public waterfront demonstration park.

PlaNYC Reforestation and New York City Afforestation Project 2007-present

A professional and academic team developed the planting design methodologies for site selection and assessment of 2000 acres, categorizing sites and evaluating the reforestation suitability, developing a range of invasives management strategies and reforestation details and specifications for site construction. The team also developed a large-scale post-construction urban green infrastructure research program citywide and in at two sites, Kissena Corridor Park (Built 2010) and Willow Lake (Built 2011). These designed experiments are planted with native trees and shrubs and are being used to test how management (e.g. tree species identity and organic amendment) affects the resilience and sustainability of planted, urban forests, permitting us to recommend practices for their successful establishment and maintenance.
