BARXETAWarning: Before experiencing this CD, make sure you have room to freely move your body! You are holding the debut CD recording from Studio Barxeta, Valencia. It’s a gourmet recipe of Jazz/Jazz-Rock/Funk/World music from the global village cookbook. ‘Barxeta’ is yet another distinguished addition to the deliciously diverse Losen Records catalogue.

THE BANDOnly geographically are there boundaries. Drummer/percus-sionist Alex Acuña was born in the western part of Peru and raised in Puerto Rico and the USA. Electric/acoustic bassist Per Mathisen is from the east-ern part of Norway. Pianist/synth maestro Jan Gunnar Hoff is from the northern part of Norway.

‘Barxeta’ is the second album from the band, which since forming in 2008 has toured extensively. Individually, their pedigrees are impeccable. Alex, one of the most accom-plished drummer/percussion-ists on the planet, displays here immense passion and creativity. His unique sense of timing and folklore-feel provide the foundation for this excel-lent album. Per’s immaculate technique and distinctive sound are expressed through an arsenal of basses and the creative use of multi-effects. Throughout the album he plays with inspirational ingenuity, cherishing each note and phrase. Jan Gunnar’s mix of acoustic and electric keyboards is simply unique. His crafts-manship combined with an innate sense of melody pervades these tracks and empowers the band to create rich tapestries of sound.

THE TRACKSBarxeta opens with ‘Belarus’, a gentle musical landscape with a quietly urgent rhythmic back-bone. It’s a tireless conga/bongo extravaganza – featuring an ethnic vocal by Alex. The percussive intro to the title track ‘Barxeta’ leads

to a hauntingly memorable statement on fretless bass. The track blossoms into a bal-anced, laid-back three-chef-chilled-cuisine! ‘Tu Amor’ is a bewitching musical journey. Subtle thematic harmonies both minor and major are punctuated by tour-de-force bass riffs, pianoFORTE – and all very nicely served up on a propulsive bed of Acuña Latin drive. Talking of which, ‘Havana Drive’ is a Cuban-inspired platform for afi cio-nados. ‘Indochina’ is special. For me, Jan Gunnar and Per are two of the greatest musi-cians I have had the honour of playing with.

In spite of the busy schedules we all have in the music busi-ness, we “The AHM Trio” – are very close friends and love to play together.

The very fi rst time was about 6 years ago, and we really clicked musically. Jan Gunnar had been able to book some gigs at some jazz events in Norway and Croatia. Per connected us

to make our fi rst CD in Austria and also do some playing in Austria and Slovakia. We also did a tour in Sweden in 2010. I invited them to come to Los Angeles to do a DVD of the trio

and we also went to Lima, Peru to play a couple of concerts. Last but not least, we have been invited to go to Cuba next year, 2013.

Now, let´s go to the making of this CD.I had no idea where the studio was in Barxeta, Spain. I landed in Alicante all the way from LAX and then travelled for about 1 hour by car to the house where the studio is. The atmosphere of the place immediately grabbed me, I said “Wow! What a wonderful place to record

these 3 days”, and it was just like that, a great and beautiful old home, all well furnished to accommodate everyone and there we were recording with a great studio and recording engineer. It was an incredible time, great food and the music we played – just fantastic!

You can tell that I am proud of the music. We pour our hearts out and it´s honest and humbling to say that the music will speak for itself. We all had the opportunity to perform our own compositions on this great recording.

People will be listening to this CD here and all over the world. I trust in God to continue to give us the musical platform, because of the gift we have and we truly have something to say musically.

Per Mathisen is from the east-

synth maestro Jan Gunnar

Hoff is from the northern part

of Norway.

‘Barxeta’ is the second album

from the band, which since

forming in 2008 has toured

extensively. Individually, their

pedigrees are impeccable.

Alex, one of the most accom-

THE TRACKS

Barxeta opens with ‘Belarus’, a

interweave seamlessly and are

complemented with dynamic

and empathic interplay from

Per and Alex. ‘Grande Castelar’

is fi lled with fl owing synth

and bass unison riffs mas-

terly balanced with undulating

rhythmic rolls, fi lls and a killer

oured jazz-rock! ‘Embrace’ is a

celebration of the piano-based

acoustic jazz trio. A charmingly

stated theme opens the door

for a set of creative variations

that can only be so well clari-

fi ed by a band who know each

other well. ‘Latineando’ is a

percussive panacea – played

in Acuña-time! It’s a tireless

conga/bongo extravaganza –

featuring an ethnic vocal by

Alex. The percussive intro to

the title track ‘Barxeta’ leads

to a hauntingly memorable

statement on fretless bass.

The track blossoms into a bal-

anced, laid-back three-chef-

chilled-cuisine! ‘Tu Amor’ is

a bewitching musical journey.

Subtle thematic harmonies

both minor and major are

punctuated by tour-de-force

bass riffs, pianoFORTE – and

all very nicely served up on

a propulsive bed of Acuña

Latin drive. Talking of which,

‘Havana Drive’ is a Cuban-

inspired platform for afi cio-

nados. ‘Indochina’ is special.

Triplets here, tempo changes

there – ethnic evolves to rock, a

smattering of fi fths and further

to a musical master class.

‘Winds of Faith’ is an elegant/

gentle Latin/fretless/timeless

chill. In his ‘Abogat Funk’, Per

vocoder-leads a defi nitive funk

band performance. ‘La Sangria

del Sr. Manzano’ seals the

album and is an exhilarating

excursion indeed! Indefatigable

Acuña opens with an impelling

groove. Two minutes in, we

a blistering solo from Jan

Gunnar and then it’s back

to Alex and a fi nal stunning

solo played over a myriad of

mates.
