artistiC direCtor’s note

I had the great privilege to be part of the European pre-miereof thiswork in 2006. Towitness Levin’s explana-tions behind why he made certain choices was nothing short of outstanding, and to be led by Maestro Helmuth Rillinginthecohesivereconstructionwasalsoanexperi-ence of a lifetime. No choice that Levin made was with-out respecting sketches and material that Mozart had alreadywritten, albeit in adifferent language and for adifferentpurpose.ToillustratethepainstakingworkthatLevin carried out, he even considered certain choices of instrumentation based on the number of staves that were availabletoMozartinthestaffpaperofthetime!

Mozart completed the Kyrie and Gloria, the Credo in unum deum (lacking trumpets or timpani), the Et incar-natusest(lackingviolinsandviolasexceptfortheintro-duction and postlude), the Sanctus and Benedictus (al-though complete scores have been lost). What Robert Levin “completed” and edited was:

Cum Sancto Spiritu: The vocal cadenza from Mozart’s cantataDavidePenitente,KV469isintroducedasanop-tion–wewilldothisexciting interludeintoday’sperfor-mance.

Credo in unum deum: Gaps in the winds and strings have beenfilledin,andtrumpets,timpani,andtrombonesdou-bling the choir have been added.

Et incarnatus est:ThemissingportionsofViolinsIandIIand viola have been supplied.

Crucifixus: An eight-part double fugue for four-part cho-rus and orchestra has been developed from a 1783 sketch.

Etresurrexit: A four-parts chorus has been derived from a 1783 sketch and a motive from the Credo in unum Deum.

Et in Spiritum Sanctum: Aria for tenor, transcribed from the main section of the aria “Tra l’oscure ombre funeste” fromDavidepenitente,K.469.

Et unam sanctam: A four-part chorus derived from a 1783 sketch.

Et vitam venturi: A four part-fugue based on the counter-subject of the Kyrie.

Sanctus-Hosanna: The double choir scoring has been re-stored, using strict philological criteria, producing a con-sistentchoraltexture intheHosannafugueforthefirsttime.

Agnus Dei: Adaptation of the introduction to “Tra l’oscure ombre funeste” from Davide Penitente, in the original key and scoring.

Dona nobis pacem: A four-part chorus derived from a 1783 sketch.

I think Mozart would be pleased, more than pleased, in fact. Robert Levin made a superb reconstruction that stays true to his original intentions.

Today’sperformanceistheresultofaneffortcoordinatedby Cantabile to involve Boulder’s thriving choral commu-nity. Most productions of this piece since it was complet-ed in 2005 have involved professional groups. It is there-fore important to highlight that, in addition to Cantabile, we have represented many community choirs from the area: singers who share in a love of choral music and who have committed to bringing this piece to life. I hope you enjoythisjourneyasmuchasweallhave!

This program also marks the last time I will have the great privilege of leading Cantabile. The late Maestro Claudio Abbado once said that the more one gives, the more one receives. This is indeed true in music. I am honored to have received the trust of an incredible group of people and for that I am immensely humbled and grateful. Thank you all so much for being here today and for your contin-ued support of Cantabile and the Boulder choral com-munity.

Tonight’s performance is bitter sweet for Cantabile. We say

goodbye to an awe inspiring musician, our leader and most of all, our friend. Tonight marks the end of Alejandro Gómez Guillén’s tenure as Music Director of Cantabile. We knew when we invited him to lead us four

years ago, that Alejandro we was destined to move on as a violinist and conductor. But the years have gone by so quickly and they were filledwithamazingmusicandwonderfulfriendships.WearesorrythatashisbatongoesdownwithourfinalperformanceofMozart’samazing mass it will also go down on his time with Cantabile.

Alejandro Gómez Guillén became Cantabile’s Music Director in2010and fromourfirst rehearsalwith thisyoungand inspiringconductor, weknewthatwewereinforanexcitingride.Alejandrohasintroducedustonewmusic, newvocalexperiencesandmostofall, new awareness about ourselves as musicians. He helped us to improve “the Cantabile Sound” and made us believe that we could findourmusicdeepwithinus.

In addition to being an inspiring conductor, Alejandro’s knowledge of choralmusictookinusnewdirections, exploringalltypesofmusic.Alejandro challenged us with Brahms’ Zigeunerlieder, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem and even the Beatles. We performed American spirituals supported by the heart and soul of Fred Peterbark and were awed as we accompanied the tender bow of Geraldine Walther’sviola inVaughanWilliamsFlosCampi.AlejandrosharedhisemotionandprideforhishomeinourperformanceofDeVallesy Montañas, which was a collection of challenging pieces from Venezuela,BrazilandAlejandro’snativecountryofColombia.

Alejandro was always happy to share our music with the community.

He led us at many “open rehearsals” at the Academy and Frasier Manor retirement communities and supported us in our fundraiser screening of The Estonian Revolution. He lead us at The Estes Park Music Festival and at a Boulder Art Commission kickoffconcertinthelobbyof Boulder’sWhole Foods!Perhaps the most inspiring of Alejandro’s community projects with Cantabile was his work with the preschool-aged children and Longmont’s Wild Plum Center. This Headstart program provides early childhood education and developmental services to low-income families in the Longmont community. For sixweeks,Alejandromadeweeklytripstothecenteronweekday

mornings, taking time offfrom his busy CU schedule. With the help of Cantabile volunteers he worked with some 50 four-year-olds to teach them rhythms, basic pitch memory and finally, three short pieces that they sang at our Longmont

performanceofDeVallesyMontañas. Itwasinspirationaltoseethe little boys watch Alejandro’s every move and try to emulate him onstage.Hisworkmadesuchadifferencetoeachofthem.

So tonight we wish a friend “farewell.” We know that you will be traveling the world sharing your talents with musicians and audiences. Wearegratefulthatyousharedfourspecialyearswithus!
