Key aims of Aldenham

Admission to the School at 11+ At eleven years of age there is a three formentry, in total, 60 pupils. Applicants shouldhave attained the age of eleven beforeSeptember 1st in the year of entry. Places areoffered on the basis of a satisfactoryperformance at the 11+ test, interview andschool report. The entrance examination isheld during the Spring Term and the aim is totest the skills of the candidates whatever theirbackground. Papers are set in English andMathematics and Reasoning. If AldenhamSchool is the only choice, an early offer may bemade, subject to a satisfactory interview andschool report. The test would be sat in thenormal way.

Admission at 13+ Up to 30 places are available at 13+ to join thepupils moving up from Martineau’s House.Places are offered on the basis of 13+ test,interview and school report. The test is duringthe Spring Term and papers are set in English,Maths, a Modern Foreign Language, Scienceand Verbal Reasoning. If Aldenham School is the only choice, an early offer may be made, subject to a satisfactory interview andschool report. The test would be sat in thenormal way.

Admission to Sixth Form Places are available at Sixth Form level forboth boys and girls. Offers are based on aschool report and individual interview. Aminimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C orabove is required, with at least B gradesexpected in the subjects to be studied atAS/A2 Level.

Admission at other ages Vacancies do sometimes arise other than at11+, 13+, 16+ and enquiries for admissionshould be made in the usual way bycontacting the Admissions Co-ordinator.

Open Days Open Days are held for prospective parents inthe Autumn and Summer Terms each year,with a Sixth Form Open Evening in the Autumnterm. On these occasions the Headmaster willspeak and there is an opportunity to meetboth staff and pupils. Please telephone theAdmissions Co-ordinator for further details.

Music Tuition Fees (Individual) 40 minute lesson £23.40 per lesson. Forfurther details of music lessons availableplease refer to page 15.

Notes

i) The Registration Fee is payable at the time aboy or girl is registered and before an offer ofa place can be made.

ii) During the year in which a boy or girl is dueto enter the School, an acceptance deposit of£1,000 is payable to be set off against the finalterm’s extras bill. For overseas students thedeposit is a term’s fees, of this £1,000 will beheld against the final term’s extras bill and theremainder will be set off against the final term’sfees. This deposit will be returned only whenthe School has to cancel the entry as a result ofexam performance or for health or otherreasons as specified in the Standard Terms andConditions.

iii) For convenience Fees are payable termly inadvance in three equal amounts and may bepaid either in full by termly Direct Debit or on amonthly basis through the Schools Fees Planscheme. We also take debit/credit cards (there isa small charge for credit cards).* If the fees arenot paid by the due date the School reserves theright to impose a surcharge or to require that aboy or girl leave the School until the relevant feesare paid. It is the Governors’ intention to holdfees at the level stated for the full Academic Year2011/2012 but they reserve the right to changethem if circumstances so require.

A term’s notice must be given if it is necessary fora boy or girl to leave the School, otherwise a fullterm’s fees in lieu of notice will be payable,notwithstanding any increase there may havebeen from the above date. A term’s notice mustalso be given for a change of status fromboarding to day, and a half a term’s notice forother changes.

iv) The School can provide details of schemesinvolving lump sum payment of fees in advanceand is always ready to discuss other ways ofproviding for school fees.

* Any other method of payment must beindividually agreed with the School.

A number of awards are made each year forexceptional performance at the time ofapplication in academic work, art, music,technology or sport. Occasionally fine allrounders are given an award. Sixth Formscholarships are available either for thosealready in the School or those joining at thatpoint, based on potential to succeed in the SixthForm.

Bursary funding is available to support a numberof students each year whose familycircumstances mean that they would be unableto join or continue in the School, but where theirpotential of success is judged significant. Allawards are subject to an annual review which iscarried out during the Summer term for thefollowing school year.

All Scholarships, Exhibitions and Bursaries aretenable from the time of the award until the boyor girl leaves the School. Holders of awards areexpected to remain at School until they havetaken their A Level exams and the continuance ofthe award is subject to satisfactory progress andconduct (and in the case of Bursaries tocontinuing need).

Academic Awards At 11+, the awards are made on the basis ofperformance in the Entry Test and asubsequent interview. Parents whose son ordaughter has a special ability in Art, Music,Technology or Sport should inform theAdmissions Secretary well before the EntryTests as an audition or portfolio of project workwill be required on the day of the Entry Test.

At 13+, candidates for academic awards mustbe supported by the candidate’s currentschool. Candidates must be under 14 on 1stSeptember following the exam. Candidates sitthe following papers: English, Mathematics,Science, French.

At 16+, awards are made on the basis of GCSEperformance and interview.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Music Awards Candidates at all ages should offer twoinstruments (this includes singing, especially at16+, which forms an important part of themusical life of the School as a whole) and thestandard of one of these at 11+ should beGrade III / IV of the Associated Board, at 13+Grade V/VI and at 16+ Grade VI / VII. MusicScholars and Exhibitioners receive freeinstrumental tuition. Consideration will begiven to candidates according to potential andthe candidate’s enthusiasm to take part inmusical activities such as concerts, musiccompetitions, choir, orchestra and chambergroups.

Art Awards Art Scholars are seen as ambassadors for thedepartment within the school. Candidatesshould therefore be able to demonstrate anexcellent drawing and painting ability as wellas strengths in using a wide variety of mediawithin their A3/A2 sized portfolio brought tointerview for further discussion (all 3-D work &large scale pieces to be presented asphotographs within the portfolio). Candidatesshould show a well advanced visualperception, being able to communicate ideasand feelings in a visual way based on bothperception and conception (observed,remembered and imagined). The portfoliowork should consist of the most recent and upto date art work completed either in school orin their own spare time beyond the classroom. There will also be a 45 minute drawingtask during the interview. Potential art scholarsshould be able to discuss their workconfidently and express their deep interestand enthusiasm for this subject fluently atinterview.

Technology Awards We look for an ability to explore and resolvedesign problems amongst the many areas oftechnology, particularly resistant materials(wood, metals, plastics) and includingelectronics, textiles and graphic products.Younger candidates will clearly have a muchreduced range of workshop experience, but allare required to show evidence of theirexcellence through an informal portfolio ofwritten work, graphics and manufacturedproducts. Candidates are interviewed bydepartment staff and undertake a series ofshort challenges to establish their potential astechnologists. Prior knowledge is much lessimportant than latent ability.

Sports Awards Sports Scholarships are offered in line with oneof the following criteria:

• Excellence at one of the following majorsports: For boys – a) Football b) Cricket c) Hockey For girls – a) Hockey b) Netball Excellence may be measured by thestandard at which the individual plays forexample County, association with a footballleague club, etc.

• A very high attainment at two or more of the following: For boys – a) Football b) Cricket c) Hockey For girls – a) Hockey b) Netball c) range of other sports including rounders and tennis for example regular School 1st XI.

The School Day ‘Call’ in Houses for boarders is at 7.30amfollowed by breakfast from 7.35–8.05am.Registration for all pupils is at 8.30am.Lessons begin at 8.40am. On Monday thereis a Headmaster’s Assembly. On Monday,Wednesday and Friday the whole schoolmeets in Chapel for Assembly or an act ofworship. There are five lessons everymorning. There are three lessons on Mondayafternoon and two lessons on all otherweekday afternoons. There is one gamesafternoon each week. Extra curricularactivities run twice weekly. Pupils meet withtheir Tutors for tutorials and Life Skills everyWednesday afternoon.

The School day finishes at 5.30pm every dayexcept Friday when there is an early finish at4.30pm.

Homework (Preparation) ‘Prep’ at Aldenham follows the best of modernpractice: staff set tasks that test understandingand provide more evidence of progress. Pupilsin Martineau’s are asked to complete work inthree subjects each evening. The amount andlength of ‘Prep’ is gradually increased as pupilsmove up through the School. GCSE students dothree subjects each evening and Sixth Formersare encouraged to work independently inaddition to their set tasks. In every case, ‘Prep’is a key part of learning at Aldenham.

Monitoring Pupils’ Progress Aldenham has created a culture of learningand improvement for all. Our excellentpupil/teacher ratio and small size allows us tomonitor progress and provide individual careso that everyone reaches his or her fullpotential. Pupils are given close guidance bytheir tutor and housemaster and all pupils areconstantly challenged by enthusiastic andeffective teachers. We aim to maximise theopportunities for all to flourish, so pupils andparents can value the achievements of everypupil at the School.

Medical Facilities The School has a well equipped MedicalCentre staffed by a team of highly qualifiednurses to deal with minor ailments andinjuries. Health education, as well as supportand advice, is available to all students and isan important part of the medical service.

The School Doctor holds a daily surgery forboarders at the School and is available foradvice in between visits. Medical screening onentry to the School is available along with theoption to take part in the School’simmunisation programme which includes allrelevant vaccinations for each year group.Appointments with a highly qualified SportsTherapist can be arranged when required. AnIndependent Counsellor will see pupils wishingto discuss issues in confidence.

The School and the Wider Community

Catering Brookwood are the School caterers with fulltime management on site with responsibilityfor all catering and domestic services withinthe School. A wide selection of food isavailable from the dining room at breakfast,lunch and dinner, with a salad bar alwaysavailable as an option at lunch time. Hot andcold vegetarian options are available at allmeals. Special requirements for medicalreasons can be discussed with the CateringManagement. Brookwood also operate theTuck Shop which is open at break andlunchtimes Monday-Friday.

The School Shop The School Shop is operated by Stevensonsand is open Monday-Friday from 1.00-4.00pmduring term time and on an appointmentbasis in the summer holiday. Telephone 01727814368.

Parents Good liaison between home and school is anessential part of life at Aldenham. We value ourrelationship with parents who can contact theSchool at anytime. Close communicationbetween school and home, whether boardingor day pupils is one of the foundations of asuccessful career at the School. An enewsletteris sent by email to parents each Friday givingupdates on events and school news.

The Aldenham School Parents’ Association (ASPA) Our community extends to parents, many ofwhom are involved in ASPA. The association isopen to all parents with children at the Schooland is structured to promote social occasionsand encourage exchange of information. Thecommittee of parents is elected each year andASPA actively supports School events andruns various fund raising activities during theyear, the profits of which help to fund items from the School’s Wish List.

The Old Aldenhamian [OA] Society All pupils have the opportunity to join the OAsat the time of leaving the School. TheAssociation publishes regular magazines andhas its own website and on-line register tokeep members in touch. There are regular OAevents throughout the year. The OA Societyfields football and cricket teams whichcompete in local leagues, and also has activeGolf and Fives Clubs.

Charities Pupils are encouraged to develop anawareness of sociological andenvironmental problems and exercise care,concern and respect for others. To co-ordinate this programme there is a SchoolCharity Committee which works to support anumber of charities by raising moneythrough a range of events. The committee isrun by the School Chaplain and aims to offerpractical and financial support to charities athome and abroad.

The Sixth Form Aldenham offers a wide variety of choice in theSixth Form. Pupils choose 4 AdvancedSubsidiary subjects in their Lower Sixth year. Inthe Upper Sixth, pupils will normally take 3subjects at A2 level. In combination with ourextensive extra-curricular programme, workexperience and UCAS advice, the curriculum inthe Sixth Form will continue to give pupils theirbest opportunities and preparation foruniversity entry.

Sixth Form Leavers 2011The majority of this year’s leavers gained placesat their chosen universities includingBirmingham, Bristol, Goldsmiths, KCL, LondonCollege of Fashion, London College of Music,Loughborough, Manchester, Nottingham,Portsmouth, Reading, Royal Holloway, Sheffield,Sussex, UCL and York.

The GCSE Programme Pupils follow an extensive ‘core’ programme ofstudy, which involves work in both EnglishLanguage and Literature, Science (taught asthree separate sciences, leading to a doubleor triple GCSE award), Mathematics, a ModernForeign Language, Religious Studies andPhysical Education. In addition, pupils choosefrom a wide choice, including History,Geography, Music, Art, Design Technology, PE,Dance and Drama. Pupils are set in subjectswhere appropriate. Coursework is carefullyguided and all pupils have access to theInformation Technology Centre to support theirGCSE studies.

The Lower School Pupils in Martineau’s follow an extendedcurriculum in 15 subjects, including Latin. Allpupils also have an introduction to playing amusical instrument. Emphasis is placed onEnglish and Mathematics, as literacy andnumeracy provide the foundation for successin other areas. Pupils are also introduced toDrama. The curriculum equips pupils with theknowledge, skills and understanding for themto make a reasoned choice of subjects forGCSE.

Sport and GamesSpecialist Games teachers, assisted by manymembers of the Common Room, coachGames to individual year groups within theschool timetable. Each year group has oneregular slot allocated within the timetable forthe coaching of Games and in additionTuesday afternoon is also set aside for Schoolmatches and House Games. The emphasisduring Games sessions for Martineau’s pupilsis on the major team sports (football, hockeyand cricket for boys, and hockey, netball, androunders for the girls), although greater choiceand variety are introduced as pupils progressupwards through the school. School fixturesagainst neighbouring schools take place onTuesdays and Saturdays for year 9 pupils andabove, while Martineau’s fixtures are normallyon Wednesday afternoons.

BOARDING

Aldenham has always been a BoardingSchool with a boarding school ethos based ona strong House system. The School offers thefull range of boarding options to pupils from11-18 years of age. The aim is to offer anumber of opportunities for families within atraditional framework of Day and Boardingthus allowing children to move from Day toBoarding status to reflect family circumstanceseven if only on a temporary basis.

Full Boarding There are 4 Boarding Houses, Beevor’s,Kennedy’s, McGill’s and Paull’s. Each is run bya Housemaster, helped by spouses, a matronand resident tutor. There are around 60children in each House including a separategirls’ Day and Boarding House.

Flexi Boarding For some pupils the need exists to board on avariable or limited basis and the School ispleased to be able to accommodate theserequirements recognising the needs of themodern day requirements of working families,subject to the availability of space in a BoardingHouse. Pupils have their own regularlyallocated bed and facilities in the House.

Flexible dayboarding offers the advantages ofan evening meal, supervision and other facilitiesin the Boarding House without, of course,staying overnight. Pupils will have a regularlyallocated study space within each House.

Occasional Boarding or Dayboarding enablesa pupil’s needs to be accommodated withinthe House on an infrequent basis. Places areby necessity limited and will depend uponavailability, but every attempt will be made tomeet parents’ requests. A charge of £45 pernight is levied for this service and added to theend of term bill.

ACTIVITIES

We offer all pupils from Year 7 – 13 the opportunityto participate in over sixty recreational, artistic,community or sporting activities. All activities takeplace during periods 8 and 9 every Tuesday andThursday. Pupils opt for activities on a termlybasis. We encourage the development of skillsover a longer period of time as well as givingstudents the chance to experience a variety ofnew pursuits and challenges. Some pupils mightstay with one activity, such as sailing or CCF,throughout most of their school career, whileothers might participate in new activities everyterm. Some of the activities we offer at Aldenhaminclude fives, Young Enterprise, cookery, streetdancing, photography, climbing, golf, archery,horse riding and squash. There is the chance toparticipate in a school play or one of the manymusic groups such as the Choir or Orchestra. Werun a Duke of Edinburgh scheme and also offer anumber of community service activities. There isan EAL programme for overseas students.

Sixth Form Year 12 & 13 pupils often take on a leadershiprole supporting a member of staff in instructingyounger pupils as part of their activitiescommitment. They also have the option ofprivate study or an early leave from school onTuesday afternoon. Alternatively pupils maychoose from options which have a theme ofservice to the community, including visiting localelderly residents, entertaining a group of visitorsto the School, working in our Prep School orwith local young people who have learningdifficulties, or doing voluntary work on site. TheYoung Enterprise business scheme, the Duke ofEdinburgh scheme (Gold Award) and the CCFare all popular choices for pupils wishing togain leadership experience. The aim is toaccustom pupils to take on responsibility forother people or the community’s welfare as wellas for themselves.

Years 9, 10 and 11 For these year groups, the activities afternoonsare designed to allow pupils to pursue asporting or other activity which may be new tothem or which is not available at other times inthe School programme. Many of the optionscan be used as components towards pupils’bronze or silver Duke of Edinburgh award.Pupils tend to pursue a different activity eachterm but can choose to remain with one forlonger. The CCF (Army & RAF sections) isavailable to all students in Year 9 and above.

Years 7 and 8The emphasis at this age is to introduce thepupils to new activities in a fun environment or toaccelerate their learning of new sporting andnon-sporting interests.

MusicIndividual lessons are given on the Piano, Organ,Guitar, Saxophone, Drum Kit, OrchestralPercussion, Electronic Keyboard and all the usualorchestral instruments by specialist teachers.Singing tuition is also available. A limited numberof new pupils are offered music lessons on a trialbasis at a reduced fee to encourage the playingof an orchestral instrument.

Duke of Edinburgh 35 pupils are currently following the Duke ofEdinburgh Award programme. 12 pupils wereawarded the Bronze Award, 5 others completedtheir Silver and 18 are working towards theirGold. Expeditions for Bronze are operated inHertfordshire whilst for Silver and Gold these areorganised in the Peak District and Dorset.

Do you run a coach service?Yes, we currently run eight bus routes pickingup across North London from 7.25am. Forfurther details see next page.

How far in advance do I need toregister my son /daughter?Ideally by the term before the entranceexam takes place. This enables us to obtainreferences and interview him/her before theexam. Late applications can be accepted butthey may have to be placed on a Waiting List.

Do I need to come for interview ifI have been to an Open Afternoon?If Aldenham is your first choice school, theHeadmaster likes to meet you and your son/daughter personally. This should be during theacademic year preceding the date of entry.

Do I need to meet the Headmaster?The Headmaster likes to see all prospectivepupils and their parents if possible.

Why can’t my son /daughter come at11+ if he / she is at a 13+ Prep School?Unless there is a specific reason, pupils shouldstay at their Prep School until they are 13. Thisgives them the responsibility and advantagesof being a senior member of their school whichis an important part of their development.Martineau’s House was primarily openedfor pupils from schools which finish at 11+.

When does the Entrance Exam take place?11+ – 9th January 201213+ – 11th January 201216+ – Pupils are primarily taken on predictedresults, report from current school and interview.

What does the Entrance Exam consist of?13+ – English, Maths, A Modern ForeignLanguage (French, Geman, Spanish), Scienceand Verbal Reasoning.11+ – English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning.

Can I have a copy of past Entrance papers?Yes, these are available from the AdmissionsCo-ordinator, except for 11+ Maths and VerbalReasoning.

Can we be offered a ReservedPlace before the exam at 11+ / 13+?Reserved places are only offered if you arewilling to commit yourself to Aldenham and noother independent school, a School Report hasbeen obtained and you have been interviewedby the Headmaster. He would then be in aposition to offer a Reserved Place, if he feltAldenham to be the right school for your sonor daughter. It is a two way commitment. Yourson or daughter would still sit the EntranceTest in the normal way to confirm the place.

How do I apply for a scholarship?You need to write in separately or put a noteon the application form specifying the particularscholarship for which you wish your son /daughter to be considered.

We are seeking a bursary,how do we apply for this?You should advise the Headmaster at interviewor put a note on the application form that youare looking for a bursary. Bursaries are limitedin number and are strictly means tested. Anadditional interview is given to bursary candidates.

Do you cater for pupilswith Learning Difficulties?We have an extremely good Learning SupportDepartment. However, pupils do need to beable to cope in the normal classroom situation;they are not taught separately, but have extratuition as and when necessary.

How many girls are there at Aldenham?There are approximately 200 girls in the Schoolas a whole.

a) From London the easiest route is fromLondon St Pancras (First Capital Connect route)to Elstree & Borehamwood, taxi for the 5minute drive to the School. Trains run every 20minutes and the journey takes 20-25 minutes.

b) From the North West most InterCity trainsstop at Watford Junction on the way intoEuston. Aldenham School is a 10 minute taxiride from Watford. It is important that thedriver knows you are going to the School andnot the village of Aldenham.

b) M25 Junction 23: Follow A1 to StirlingCorner. A411 to Elstree, across the traffic lights,then 1st right into Aldenham Road. Continuealong this road for about 2 miles, the car parkis on the right, over the brow of a hill.

c) From M1 Junction 5: Follow A41 Southtowards Watford, proceed as in a) above. DONOT TAKE ANY SIGNS TO ALDENHAM VILLAGE.

d) From London: Take M1 to Junction 5,proceed as in (a) above, OR from Apex Cornertake the A41 North to the Elstree roundabout.Turn right uphill into Elstree and left at thetraffic lights. Take the 1st right into AldenhamRoad and proceed as in (b) left.

e) From Radlett: Take the A5183 going southtowards Edgware. Proceed 1½ miles, turn rightinto Butterfly Lane, continue until you come toa T-junction, turn right and the School car parkis on the right after ½ mile.

At the time of printing, the School’s Terms and Conditions areundergoing review. The Terms and Conditions under which anoffer and Acceptance of a place at the School is made will bethose which form the basis of your contract with the School.

1 ALDENHAM SCHOOL

a) The SchoolThe School is The Aldenham Foundation, acting by itsgoverning body as now or in the future constituted. When achild enters the School as a pupil, it is assumed that he/shewill, in due course and subject to conduct and academicattainments, complete the final A Level year.

b) The HeadmasterThe Headmaster is the person appointed by the governingbody to be responsible for the pupil and includes those towhom any of the duties of the Headmaster or governing bodyhave been responsibly delegated.

c) The Parent/sThe Parent/s are those referred to at clause 4c) of these termsand conditions individually and jointly. Parents are expectedto give their support and encouragement to the aims of theSchool and to uphold and promote its good name: to continuethe pupil’s education at home and to ensure that the pupilmaintains appropriate standards of punctuality, behaviour,diligence, language, dress, appearance and discipline.

d) Our AimsThe School aims to strike the right balance between academicand practical work, physical education, moral and spiritualdevelopment and the pursuit of leisure activities. We arecommitted to high standards of teaching and care and wewelcome parental contact. The School is an environment inwhich young people are encouraged to develop at their ownpace and to prepare for a successful life in the modern world.

e) Changes at the SchoolA successful school must initiate and respond to change. Theoffer of a place and its acceptance are given on the basis that,in the interests of the School as a whole, reasonable changesmay be made from time to time to these standard terms andconditions, to the size and location of the School, to itspremises and facilities, to the academic and games curriculumand the structure and composition of classes and the way theSchool is run, to the length of the school terms and the schoolday and to any other aspect of the School. Fee levels will bereviewed each year and there will be reasonable increasesfrom time to time. Parents would be consulted and/or givenadequate notice of any significant proposals or change ofpolicy likely to affect the school community as a whole.

f) The Standard Terms and ConditionsWe believe that these standard terms and conditions reflectthe customs and practice of independent schools for manygenerations. The rules about change and about notice and feesin lieu of notice and the other rules set out below are providedin good faith. They promote stability, forward-planning and theproper resourcing and development of the School. They helpalso to protect parents and members of the governing bodyfrom fees increases and liabilities caused by the defaults ofothers. Any waiver is effective only if given in writing by theHeadmaster personally.

2 CARE AND GOOD DISCIPLINE

a) Parents’ AuthorityThe parents authorise the Headmaster while in loco parentis totake and/or authorise in good faith all decisions that safeguardand promote the welfare of the pupil. Parents consent to suchphysical contact with the pupil as may be lawful, appropriate andproper for teaching and to provide comfort to a pupil in distressor to maintain safety and good order. Corporal punishment isnot used. Parents consent also to emergency medical treatment,including general anaesthetic and operation under NHS or ata private hospital where certified by a doctor necessary for thewelfare of the pupil and if parents cannot be contacted in time.

b) AttendanceThe pupil is expected to take a full part in the activities of theSchool, to attend on each school day, to work hard and tobe well-behaved. All pupils save those who are excused onreligious grounds will receive education appropriate to ageabout health, smoking, alcohol, sex and drugs.

c) The Pupil’s HealthParents must inform the Headmaster if the pupil has any knownmedical condition, health problem or allergy or will be unableto take part in games or sporting activities or has been incontact with infectious diseases. The pupil must not be sentto School if unwell.

d) Conduct of the SchoolWe attach importance to courtesy, manners and discipline.The Headmaster is responsible for the care and good disciplineof pupils while they are in the charge of the School or its staffand for the day to day running of the School and the curriculum.The Headmaster is not responsible, unless negligent, for apupil who absents him/herself from the School in breach ofschool rules and discipline. There is an anti-bullying policywhich will be enforced by expulsion if necessary. It is a conditionof remaining at the School that parents and the pupil (includinga pupil aged 16+ and 18+) accept the school regime and therules (in so far as they are lawful and reasonable) about thewearing of school uniform, and as to appearance and dressand the rules of school discipline that apply from time to time.

Standard Terms and Conditions

e) The School RulesEach pupil is supplied with a copy of the School Rules givinginformation about the ethos, activities, timetable and rules atthe School. The purpose of the Handbook is to help every pupilto know what is expected and to encourage courtesy andconsideration for others. Each pupil should read the Handbookand be familiar with its contents.

3 ADMISSION AND ENTRY TO THE SCHOOL

a) RegistrationPupils will be considered for admission and entry to the Schoolwhen the registration form has been completed and returnedto us and the non-returnable registration fee paid. Admissionis at the discretion of the Headmaster.

b) Offer of a Place and Deposit(s)If a place is offered, the deposit will be payable when parentsaccept the offer. The deposit will be set off against the final billissued by the School at the time the child leaves the school.

4 FEES AND EXTRAS

a) Items coveredFees cover the normal curriculum including class music, dramaand games together with most books and stationery. (In theSixth Form, fees do not include books.) Other items incurred bythe School or the pupil may be charged as ‘Extras’. The pupilis for these purposes agent of the parents. ‘Damage’ doneby a pupil, other than fair wear and tear, may be separatelyinvoiced and must he paid as an extra.

b) Payment of fees and extrasEach invoice must be paid on or before the first day of term. Apupil may be excluded from School at any time when fees areunpaid and will be deemed withdrawn without notice 28 dayafter exclusion. (Then a term’s fees in lieu of notice would bepayable). The School is agent only in respect of any goods andservices which are supplied by a third party via the Schoolto parents or pupils. Fees will not be refunded or waived forabsence through sickness; or if a term is shortened or a vacationextended; or if a pupil is released home before the normalend of term: or if food has not been consumed: or for anyother cause except in the sole discretion of the Headmaster.

c) Responsibility for paymentFees are the joint and several responsibility of each personwho has signed the Acceptance Form or who has parentalresponsibility for the pupil or has paid any fees or has knowinglyreturned the pupil to the School or given instructions in relationto the pupil. The School may withhold any information orproperty while fees are unpaid.

d) Unpaid feesSimple interest calculated on a daily basis at 1.5% per monthand all administration and legal costs will be charged in relationto fees, fees in lieu of notice and extras that are unpaid by thedue date. It is agreed that the amount of all late paymentcharges should reflect the commercial rates that would beapplied by a financial institution in a case of unauthorised andunsecured borrowing. Such charges will be recoverable byaction if necessary. Cheques delivered at any time after thefirst day of term will be presented immediately and will notbe considered as payment until cleared.

The rules in clauses 4 and 5 of these terms and conditions areintended to protect those parents who pay fees on time and tosafeguard the School and the Governors against consequencesof the defaults of others.

e) Instalment arrangementsAn agreement by the School to accept instalment payment offees by standing order or direct debit or any other arrangementfor payment of fees by instalments will cease automatically inthe event of default for 30 days or more. On ceasing, the fullamount of fees then due shall be payable forthwith as a debtand interest will start to accrue.

5 EVENTS REQUIRING NOTICE IN WRITING

a) DefinitionsNotice means (unless the contrary is stated in these terms andconditions or the Fees List) a term’s written notice delivered toand actually received by the Headmaster. No other notice willsuffice. Notices must be addressed and hand-delivered to theHeadmaster or received by the Headmaster after being sentby recorded or guaranteed delivery post to the School address.Provisional Notice is valid only for the term in which it is givenand only when written and accepted in writing by theHeadmaster.

Term means the period between and including the first andlast days of each school term. Fees in lieu means fees in fullfor the term of notice at the rate that would have applied hadthe pupil attended and not limited to the parental contributionin the case of a scholarship or bursary.

b) Cancelling AcceptanceA term’s fees in lieu of notice (less deposit held) will be payableby the parents if, for any reason, they cancel their acceptance ofa place or the pupil does not join the School. Cases of seriousillness or genuine hardship may receive special considerationon written request.

c) Withdrawal from the SchoolIt is assumed that the pupil will complete the three terms ofeach School Year; otherwise a term’s notice must be givenbefore the pupil is withdrawn or a term’s fees in lieu will bedue and payable as a debt at the rate applicable on the dateof invoice whether or not the place can be filled. The pupilsdecision to withdraw him/herself from the School shall, forthese purposes, be treated as a withdrawal by the parents.The ‘School Year’ starts on 1 September in each year. The mainreason for these rules are to promote stability of the schoolcommunity and to ensure that the School has sufficient noticewith which to plan resources and the curriculum.

d) Other Events Requiring Written NoticeA term’s written notice (or two terms in any of the pupil’s publicexamination years) must be given by parents before a pupilchanges from boarding to day or to day boarding. The reasonfor this rule is to ensure, so far as possible, the stability of theschool community during examination terms. Half a term’swritten notice is required to discontinue an extra. In each case, ifthe required notice is not given the difference will be payable inlieu as a debt The School may terminate this agreement on oneterm’s written notice and otherwise clauses 6a) and b) below.

6 REMOVAL AND EXPULSION OF A PUPIL

a) Removal at the Request of the SchoolParents may be required, during or at the end of a term,to remove the pupil, without refund of fees, temporarily orpermanently from boarding and/or from the School if, afterconsultation with a parent, the Headmaster is of the opinionthat the conduct or progress of the pupil has been unsatisfactoryor a parent has treated the School or members of its staffunreasonably and such removal is warranted in all thecircumstances. The deposit would be refunded in the eventof removal from the School and fees in lieu of notice would notbe charged but all outstanding fees would be payable in full.

b) ExpulsionThe pupil may be expelled at any time if the Headmaster isreasonably satisfied that the pupil’s conduct (whether on or offschool premises or in or out of term-time) has been prejudicial togood order or school discipline or to the reputation of the Schooland that the continued presence of the pupil is incompatiblethe interests of the School. The Headmaster will act fairly inaccordance with the principles and procedures of natural justiceand would not expel a pupil other than in grave circumstances.A review procedure is also available. There would be no refundof fees in these circumstances (and all unpaid fees must bepaid) and the deposit would not be returned/credited; but feesin lieu of notice would not be charged.

c) Discretion of HeadmasterThe decision to suspend, require removal or expel a pupil andthe manner and form of any announcement shall be in thesole discretion of the Headmaster. Under no circumstancesshall the School or its staff be required to divulge to parent/sany confidential information or the identities of pupils or otherswho have given information which has led to expulsion or therequirement to remove or suspend which the Headmaster hasacquired during an investigation.

d) ReviewIn the event of a pupil’s removal being required or the pupil beingexpelled, the Headmaster will advise parents of the procedure(of which copies are available on request) under which a writtenapplication for a review of the decision may be made.

e) Re-admissionA pupil who has been withdrawn, excluded, suspended,removed or expelled from the School has no right to enterschool premises without the previous written permission ofthe Headmaster.

7 GENERAL CONDITIONS

a) Special PrecautionsThe Headmaster must be notified in writing immediately of anycourt orders or situations of risk in relation to a pupil for whomany special safety precautions may be needed. A parent maybe excluded from school premises if the Headmaster, actingproperly, considers such exclusion to be in the best interestsof the pupil or of the School.

b) Residence during Term TimeDuring term time, boarders must live at the School and allpupils, when not boarding, must live with one or both parentsunless the Headmaster has consented in writing to some otherresidence arrangement. Pupils aged 16 or over will, subject toappropriate safeguards, be permitted to travel alone to visitparents or other relations on Exeat weekends and at certainother times.

c) Absence of ParentsWhen both parents will be away from their home in the UnitedKingdom overnight during term time or if both parents normallyreside outside the United Kingdom the Headmaster mustbe informed in writing of the name, address and telephonenumber/s for 24 hour contact of a suitable legal guardian orother adult with whom the pupil will reside, if not boarding,and who is willing and authorised by the parents to accept fullresponsibility for the pupil when not at school. These mattersare the responsibility of the parents.

Standard Terms and Conditions

d) InsurancesThe School undertakes to maintain those insurances which areprescribed by law. All other insurances are the responsibilityof parents. The School is not the agent of the parents for anypurpose related to insurance.

e) Concerns/ComplaintsParents who have cause for serious concern as to a matter ofsafety, care or quality of education must inform the Headmasterwithout delay.

f) Special Learning DifficultiesParents will be notified if it appears that the pupil is fallingbehind with studies. Extra tuition and remedial teaching canbe arranged and will he charged as an extra but the Schooldoes not undertake to diagnose conditions such as thoserelating to dyslexia or poor visual acuity. The School will, onrequest, advise parents as to how they may, at their ownexpense, obtain specialist advice.

g) Medical SupervisionBefore entering the School the pupil must be immunisedagainst poliomyelitis and tetanus. The Headmaster may at anytime require a medical certificate as to the general health ofthe pupil or (where grounds for suspicion exist) a urine sampletaken under medical supervision to test for illegal substances.

h) ConfidentialityThe parents consent on behalf of the pupil to the School Doctorand the Nurse acting conscientiously and in their professionalcapacity, informing each other and the Headmaster andparents in confidence of any matter concerning the pupilwhich in their opinion is material to the safety and well-beingof the pupil and/or others. The parents consent to the Schoolcommunicating with any other school which the pupil attendsor which a parent proposes the pupil should attend about anymatter concerning the pupil or about payment of fees, whetheror not the information passing is in machine readable form.In all other respects the School will take care to preserve theconfidentiality of information concerning the pupil and parents.

i) Examinations, Reports and ReferencesThe School will enter a pupil’s name for an examination only ifthe Headmaster is satisfied that such is in the best interests ofthe pupil. Information supplied to parents and others concerningthe progress of a pupil and the character, examination, furthereducation and career prospects of the pupil and any referenceswill be given conscientiously and with all due care and skill butotherwise without liability on the part of the School.

j) CopyrightThe School reserves sole copyright in any literary, musical,dramatic or artistic work created by or on behalf of the schoolcommunity or by a pupil for purposes associated with the artisticor cultural life of the School but will otherwise acknowledge theright of the pupil to assert copyright in the work of which thepupil is sole author.

k) ProspectusThe prospectus describes the broad principles on which theSchool is presently run and gives an indication of our historyand ethos. Although believed correct at the time of printing, theprospectus is not part of any agreement between the parentsand the School. Parents wishing to place specific reliance on amatter given in the prospectus should seek written confirmationof that matter before entering this agreement.

l) LiabilityThe School is unable to accept responsibility for accidentalinjury or loss of property unless caused by its negligence.

m) Consumer ProtectionCare has been taken to use plain language in these terms andconditions and to explain the reasons for any of the terms thatmay appear one-sided. If any word/s, alone or in combination,infringe the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations1994 or any other provision of law, they shall be treated asseverable and shall be replaced with words which give, asnear as may be fair, the original meaning.

n) InterpretationThese terms and conditions supersede those in the prospectusand elsewhere and will be construed as a whole. Headingsare for ease of reading only and are not otherwise part of theterms and conditions.

o) JurisdictionThis contract was made at the School and is governedexclusively by English Law.
