cultural awareness & Diversity for our youthAlcorta’s Compañía de Danza Folklórica (ACDF) is the only outreach
dance organization in the Corpus Christi and surrounding areas for children. The company travels to different schools and targets many areas where children need after school programs. Another way for these students to benefit from what ACDF does is to bring them to view a production.
“inolvidable 2018” will enable schoolteachers to bring their classes to the del Mar College richardson performance hall on Friday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m. to experience dances from another country at no costs to the students, teachers or staff due to generous sponsorship and support. This educational and cultural event is the only one of its kind in the city. It was created by a high school Spanish teacher specifically for students to learn more about different regions and folk arts of Mexico. This event is held in compliance with the TEA guidelines for educational related absences relating to Fine Arts Education events.
For over ten years, this program has been highly successful in creating a unique educational experience for students that offers exposure to professional performing arts productions, provides intellectual stimuli and development of non-verbal thinking skills-nurturing creativity for our area youth.
in addition to the incredible dancers of alcorta’s Compañía de danza Folklórica, as a special treat to the community, the production will feature live musical accompaniment by guest musicians ensamble Folklórico de Veracruz from xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.
artistic QualityAlcorta’s Compañía de Danza Folklórica (ACDF) strives to produce
high quality Mexican Folklórico production in South Texas and beyond as it is a representation of the customs, traditions, values and people of Mexico. To ensure the upmost quality and professionalism in their presentations, ACDF’s artistic staff is highly educated in folklórico dancing by professional choreographers as well as Mexican culture and history. In addition, ACDF works with highly respected choreographers from Mexico to give workshops to their dancers to ensure the authenticity of the dances. ACDF also takes pride in making their own investigation of regions throughout Mexico, as they gather all the information needed to produce a festival of a town as a staged choreography.
For this project, ACDF will feature “Danza del Arco y Nahuilla,” a new creation by renowned choreographer Alfredo Luna of Coyutla, Mexico; and other popular works created and restaged by ACDF’s artistic director Samuel Alcorta, Jr.

coMpany historyAlcorta’s Compañía de Danza Folklórica is a 501 (c)3 non-
profi t organization dedicated to the preservation of the art of Mexican Folklórico and Latin folk dancing throughout South Texas. The company’s primary objective is to promote the Hispanic culture and diversity among students of all ages, by performing and studying the various regions of Mexico, as well as Spain and Latin America, to the people of Corpus Christi and the surrounding areas of South Texas.
The company began as a local high school folklórico dance group that had received many awards and recognitions in region and state level dance competitions; the group was recognized as one of the best folklórico dance groups in Texas at the time. As the group learned more about Mexican folklórico, they felt the need to continue learning of Mexico’s rich heritage and share their knowledge and experience with the younger generations, giving them the opportunity to learn about their heritage while engaging in a healthy activity. With this, Alcorta’s was established in 1997 under the direction of founder, Cynthia Alcorta.
The company has received many awards and recognitions in various festivals and competitions throughout Texas.
In January of 2007, Cynthia Alcorta was named “Mexican Folklórico Director of the Year” by Texas A&M International University of Laredo. In addition, Alcorta’s was named “Best of the Best Folklórico Group” at the 2009 Buc Days Competencia Folklórica Del Mar in Corpus Christi. The company has traveled to perform in San Antonio, Dallas, San Marcos, Bastrop, Edinburg and Austin Texas as well as Lake Charles, Louisiana, Las Vegas, Nevada and Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. Dancers have been featured in performances with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán as well as city tourism campaigns and local business commercials. They have also been invited to represent the United States in the Festival Folklórico Nacional de Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, Mitote Folklórico in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and The World Folk And Dance Festival in Mississauga, Canada. The company is also active with La Asociación Nacional de Grupos Folklóricos.
Many have witnessed the beautiful dancers that have graced the many stages with their authentic costumes and incredible footwork. Alcorta’s is currently under the direction of Samuel “Sammy” Alcorta, and is open to anyone interested in learning the folkloric dances of Mexico.
