The Internet and the proliferation of mobile devices, such as mobile phones and wireless personal digital assistants (PDA), are changing the way businesses communicate. Free sitting, mobility, responsiveness, customer satisfaction and cost optimization are key challenges that all enterprises are facing today. To help businesses to face these new challenges, Alcatel is proposing a new generation of unified communication applications, based on the latest Internet technologies, to improve relationships, interactions and communication: the OmniTouch Unified Communication.

2. OVERVIEW OF OMNITOUCH UNIFIED COMMUNICATION

2.1. Next Generation of Unified Communications

The OmniTouch Unified Communication is a software suite, using the latest technology, which provides a full set of IP-based unified communication applications. These applications allow subscribers to tailor, control and manage calls, messages, directories, collaboration tools and information from any location using any device and any interface, in ways never before thought of.

2.2. New Services with the OmniTouch Unified Communication

Imagine some of the capabilities of this innovative open application suite:

♦ You are stuck in traffic every morning. Using your cell phone you can manage your e-mails and voice mails using text to speech and speech recognition.

♦ While you are on a business trip, urgent information is posted on the Intranet or an urgent message is left for you. You can stay in touch with your company using the device of your choice and be notified automatically of such events. You can call back the message sender in real-time.

♦ When leaving the office on a long business trip. You can route calls to your voice mail and let callers know the date you will be returning, from your agenda.

♦ In transit at the airport, your flight is delayed. Remotely by temporarily routing business calls to your mobile phone you can avoid any lost time.

♦ If you want to improve your company greetings, you can use the powerful VxML automated attendant services of the unified messaging application to provide a personalized and interactive first class welcome service to your customers.

♦ At home you need to make a long distance business call without being charged. Via the Internet you can access the corporate directory or personal contacts, use click to call and contact your correspondent on your home phone. Your business phone is then charged for the call.

♦ While at another company site, you can use any PC, the phone in a meeting room or your mobile phone to access all your communication tools, as if you were in your own office.

♦ In your office, you are overloaded with work, but need to be reached for urgent calls. At your desk, the screen pop up function of your softphone shows you who are calling, enabling you to react accordingly.

♦ You are on the move and have forgotten to forward calls to your business phone to your voice mailbox. You can send an SMS to forward or screen your calls.

♦ You are organizing a meeting from Outlook™ or Lotus Notes™; using your PIM, you can define how you want your calls to be routed or screened during the meeting.

♦ While attending an important meeting, you are expecting an urgent call. You can screen your calls to accept only callers you need to talk to on your mobile phone. All other callers are routed to your voice mail.

♦ In a meeting, you need to call a customer for a conference call. Using your PDA, you access your corporate directory and click to call. The conference call is established using the phone in the meeting room.

♦ You need to contact urgently your collaborators in order to take a very important decision. Using presence information and instant Messaging application, chat in real-time using any device.

♦ You need to organize a conference. Click on Internet or Intranet, invite attendees, and communicate in real-time and share documents.

2.3. Applications of OmniTouch Unified Communication

The Alcatel OmniTouch Unified Communication comprises four groups of applications.

• My Messaging

This is a true VxML unified messaging application for Microsoft Exchange™ and Lotus Domino™. It is an ideal solution that leverages existing mail servers for handling non-real-time communication tools with a single multimedia mailbox.

• My Phone

This PC telephony application supports a Web client coupled with Microsoft Exchange/Outlook™ and Lotus Domino/Notes™.

It is an excellent tool for improving real-time communication flow with all types of associated devices: analog, digital, mobile phones and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

• My Assistant

This web and VxML personal assistant application defines the way call are routed and screened. It is coupled with Microsoft Exchange/Outlook™ and Lotus Domino/Notes™. This is a very useful tool for mobile workers and road warriors, helping them to stay in touch with their business world. My Messaging can also use existing voice mail systems such as A4635 or A4645 thus providing a dual storage system and specialized mail boxes (1 for e-mail, 1 for voice mail and faxes). My Messaging R3 can also combine infrastructure, for example, an existing A4635 with a brand new VxML..

• My Teamwork

This is a set of Web based applications offering conferencing and Instant Messaging services allowing a group of users to share information and knowledge.

These four applications are powered by an Interaction Engine hosting eight common and “transversal” services and features such as:

Universal directory access (LDAP, Active Directory, Personal contacts, PBX directory..)

PIM (access to calendar, to do list of Microsoft Outlook™ and Lotus Notes™) Event notifications (SMS, e-mail, MMS, Voice, WAP push notification engines) Presence (User presence) Web Services (WSDL/XML/SOAP interfaces allows integration with other

Business applications) VxML Voice access (most of the services provided by the four applications are

accessible by voice using VxML 2.0 interface) Security (A common authentication engine and connectors with authentication

servers are provided.)

Combined with these four applications, OmniTouch Unified Communication also comprises eight options.

• 4980 Softphone. An option of My Phone application, to transform a PC into a powerful phone set of the OmniPCX communication server.

• Multi Terminals. An option for accessing applications on any device (Wireless Pocket PC, PDA, SMS).

• Voice Access. An option to access applications by voices using VxML. • Dashboard. An option to enable the user to personalize their working environment

(Web home page) on any device. • Languages. An option allowing the use of several languages for voice accesses. • Multi Site: An option allowing the use of a centralized OmniTouch Unified

Communication for several sites. • Audio Conf & Data Conf. Options allowing audio conferencing and data

conferencing sessions

My Web Services based on XML/SOAP available with OmniTouch Unified Communication R3.0 allow customized integration of Unified Communication services (My Phone, My Messaging and My Assistant) in any business application. OmniTouch Unified Communication services are fully user centric as My Web Services are directly available with My Phone, My Messaging and My Assistant without additional licenses. Furthermore, the user can simultaneously access the OmniTouch Unified Communication application and associated web services (e.g. My Phone and My Phone XML web services for portal integration or contact pop-up in a PIM).

My Web Services includes high level application web services including call log, nomadic mode, call by name, etc.

In addition to My Web Services available with OmniTouch Unified Communication R3.0, Alcatel also provides:

• XML API R2.0 and IP Touch XML services

XML API R2.0 is a suite of Telephony web services available with the OmniPCX Enterprise:

• XML Telephony for real-time Telephony (evolution of existing XML Telephony API R1)

• XML Voice Mail for voice mail services

• XML Phone Set Programming

• XML Management for subscriber and phone book management

XML API R2.0 web services are based on the same interaction framework engine as OmniTouch Unified Communication R3.0.

Note that:

My Phone web services includes XML Telephony and XML Phone Set Programming web services

My Messaging web services includes XML voice mail

XML IP Touch provides display and notification services for any type of business application from Alcatel or third party

For instance third party portal applications (Websphere, Sharepoint, SAP, Oracle …) or vertical business (Contact Center, hotel, help desk, security). XML IP Touch services are available on IP Touch 4038 and 4068 of OmniPCX Enterprise R6.0.

2.5. Open Architecture and Committed to Standards

The OmniTouch Unified Communication uses the latest Internet standards and technologies, including Java (J2EE), XML/SOAP, WSDL (Web Services) VxML, SIP, RTP and RTSP. This makes it compatible with both today’s and tomorrow’s IP multimedia communication networks.

2.6. Leverage Existing Resources and Investments

The OmniTouch Unified Communication integrates seamlessly with existing corporate resources and business applications (corporate mail servers, PBXs, web content and applications, directories, Outlook™, Notes™, etc). Consequently it leverages existing investments and therefore minimizes any additional expenditure.

2.7. User Interfaces

Users can choose their own interface, as the OmniTouch Unified Communication imposes no constraints. This encourages user acceptance of the product and minimizes training costs. The interface can be: Web, mobile phone, wirelesses PDA, Outlook™, Lotus Notes™, Outlook Web Access™, iNotes™, or any kind of phone for voice access.

Alcatel has developed a unique concept for web access: a multi-device dashboard (or Web home page) that enables the user to access all the OmniTouch Unified Communication applications via one screen. Such an application is called a portlet. This home page meets the needs for mobility and personalization as it enables users on the move to access their complete working environment as if they were in the office.

The OmniTouch Unified Communication also allows a user to customize their multi-device home page to design a personalized day-to-day communication applications and information environment (bookmarks, e-news, etc).

2.8. Solution scalability

OmniTouch Unified Communications is designed to scale to the largest and most demanding customer environment. The figure below shows that UC can scale from a single server environment to a multi-server, multi-application environment serving up to 5000 users*. Specifically :

• High scalability and full featured up to 5k users in Linux environment • Single server and full featured in Linux environment • High scalability for My Phone up to 5k users in Windows environment * (w/o Dashboard, w/o vocal access)

2.9. Pricing model

Each application of UC can be purchased separately, but all of the applications are based on a common Framework for common services such as Universal Directory Access, administration, presence and other features common to all applications. Each application is sold based on a server + 10 user licenses and addition user licenses can

be purchased in blocks of users. My Teamwork also requires ports for audio and data conferencing. There are also 7 options as shown in section 1.3.

User centric licenses are offered by OmniTouch Unified Communication R3.0 as :

• My Web Services are directly available with My Phone, My Messaging and My Assistant licenses • My Phone can be associated with one or several phone sets (4980 softphone) • A user can have My Phone extensions in Outlook/Notes and a softphone

2.10. OmniPCX Enterprise compatibility

2.10.1 OmniPCX 4400 release compatibility

Support of OmniPCX 4400 R3.2 onwards for My Phone.

Support of OmniPCX 4400 R3.2 onwards for My Messaging.

Support of OmniPCX Enterprise R5.0.1 Ux for My Assistant.

2.10.2 OmniPCX Enterprise release compatibility :

There is no support of OXE R5.0Lx.

Support from R5.1 release for all applications except My Assistant which only support R5.1.1.

2.10.3 PBX-Gateway

PBX gateway (additional hardware and software purchase) is required to interconnect in some older environments including:

• OmniPCX 4400 and Enterprise 5.0 to connect My Assistant, My Messaging (Unified Messaging model) and when VxML voice access is needed for the other applications (My Assistant, My Phone, My Messaging based on 46x5 voice mail for e-mail reading).

• PBX Gateway is also necessary for Enterprise R5.1.x when G723/G729 voice compression is needed.

PBX Gateway is no more necessary for Enterprise R6.x and upwards.

This gateway is used to transport the voice media from the OmniPCX to the applications. The gateway is made of hardware and software licenses.

2.11. Languages

There are 3 points to consider for localization in Unified Communication:

• Graphical User Interface (GUI): Softphone, Dashboard, etc.... • Telephony User Interface (TUI): Voice Access to UC features • Email translations: for vocal reading of text mail

In general 8 languages are available beyond the base English language. Additional languages can be supported if the business case is justified. The table below represents the languages supported in UC 3.0 for My Phone, My Messaging and My Assistant. (My Teamwork localization schedule will be added later)

Additional languages or accents must be purchased. For additional information on language support, refer to the Feature List. If new languages are required, please contact your Alcatel representative.

2.12. Product limits

In release 3, OmniTouch Unified Communication applications can scale from 10 to 5000 users. The upper limit is highly dependant on the customer environment.

Therefore OmniTouch Unified Communication is commercially released up to 3000 users and 60 simultaneous voice ports (for unified messaging and vocal access to UC applications). Those limits are in Actis 8.x configuration tool and in sizing tool See Provisioning PC with sizing tool).

For large businesses above 3000 users, contact your local Alcatel representative to request a “Premium Customer Support process”.

Discriminations rules are based on RSI discrimination. Therefore discrimination rules should be studied at the routing point and not at the extension level.

OmniTouch Unified Communication applications can supervise up to 15 PBX nodes per system installed.

On purpose vocal access password are limited to 32 DTMF keys.

PBX Gateway is also limited to 60 ports.

Note that real limits are depending on customer’s environment in term of applications used (My Messaging, My Phone, My Assistant), traffic conditions (low, medium, high), number of users and type of user interface (web, windows, voice, IP Touch, web services APIs). This is shown in the following paragraph about sizing tool.

2.13. PC Provisioning with sizing tool

A new sizing tool is provided for PC provisioning of OmniTouch Unified Communication R3 applications. The number and type of PC platforms depends on applications used (My Messaging, My Phone, My Assistant), traffic conditions (low, medium, high), number of configured users and type of user interface (web, windows, voice, IP Touch, web services APIs)

This sizing tool complements and should be used before Actis configuration tool.

2.14.1 PC requirements

Alcatel will only guarantee an OmniTouch UC installation carried out on machines tested and certified in the “white list” specified on Alcatel’s Business Partner Web Site.

The list of the machines used for Red Hat 7.3 compatibility can be updated according to Alcatel tests on new references.
