B ilbao Art District is a joint initiative of the galleries, museums and leadingartistic stakeholders of the city, whichis backed by the participation, support

Bilbao Art District is the area between theMaritime Museum, Albia Gardens, Colón deLarreategui and the Paseo Abandoibarra. Thisarea is home to leading art galleries, booksellers, antique shops, auction houses and restorers, alongwith the Fine Arts Museums, the GuggenheimMuseum Bilbao, the Maritime Museum and SalaRekalde art centre. M uriel and Freddy Salem created theCranford Collection in 1999, with the support and collaboration of the independent curator, Andrew Renton.

From the start, the London-based collection soughtto support emerging artists making an impact in theinternational contemporary art world. At present,Cranford Collection features over 700 pieces ofpainting, sculpture, photography, installations, video, and illustrations. This exhibition focuses on the best of British andGerman art since the mid-eighties to the presentday. In total, 92 artworks and 26 artists of thelikes of Damien Hirst, Rebecca Warren, FranzWest or Paul Noble, Spartacus Chetwynd, MartinKippenberger, Sigmar Polke, Albert Oehlen, SarahLucas, Rosemarie Trockel or Martin Kippenbergermake up this exhibition.

According to Muriel Salem, “The artistsreflect society and the world we live in. Each ofthem has created a personal and intimate piece. I think of artists as activists with a language of

their own, which is illegible at first, but whichreveals its meaning over time.” This is the criteriathat guided the creation of this Collection, consideredtoday as one of the most important in Europe. This is the first time the collection has been ondisplay outside of London, and the Art Gallery at the Grupo Santander City has been awarded the privilege of introducing the public to thismagnificent selection.

As Director of Fundación Banco Santander,Borja Baselga explains, “What we try to do at theFoundation is expose the public to the work of thegreatest artists living and working today, hence ourcommitment to bringing the best contemporaryart collections, never before seen in our country, to the Santander Art Gallery.”

I t is a celebration time for culture, art and humanism. Inthis time of crisis, it is not easy to witness the birth of amuseum but, in Abu Dhabi, a city composed of islandsover the sea and which used to be an important crossroad

of the silk route and a bridge for dialogue and cultural interchange between East and West, three museums will becreated with the aim to become international references forart. Located in the cultural district of Saadiyat, the LouvreMuseum of Abu Dhabi will be the first one to open in 2015.A strongly humanistic museum which breaks with the lack offlexibility in displaying the treasures in chronological order orin geographical areas to organize them thematically for thesake of underlining the essence of human being and the linksand connections between all cultures all through history.

Situated in an impressive and architecturally striking complex designed by Jean Nouvel, which evokes the beauty of a city floating over the sea, with plazas, canals, alleyways and pavilions that twist and turn under a vast dome of some 180 metres in diameter, paying tribute to traditionalArabic architecture, perforated with interlaced patterns, to letdiffused light filter through, in a charming game of magic andpoetry, the museum will house a permanent collection of artworks representing more than two thousand years of historycoexisting with contemporary art in search of the dialogue
