CHAIR’S MESSAGE

I had the privilege of being the chairperson for the Alberta Gymnastics Federation Board of Directors for the 2015-16 year. We

had a very busy year of gymnastics across all disciplines, in many different areas of our Province. I am very proud of all of our members from the recreation level all the way up to Elite athletes. The organization continues to grow and will continue to be a leader for our sport in Canada.

The AGF staff and Board of Directors

implemented a new strategic plan this past year. The team has done significant work through year one, including progress in each of the four pillars – club support and development, coaching and judging development and leadership, gymnastics awareness, and athlete support and leadership. In the area of gymnastics awareness, the AGF staff conducted club visits, continued partnerships with schools for the Kids Can Move program, along with substantial work done on special

needs programs. In club support and development, the Federation continued partnerships with 3rd Level Consulting as well as Club Excellence, and will be implementing sessions on best practices, standard operating procedures, insurance, and others at the Congress event. All disciplines, with the exception of Acro, had members involved in

Page 6: ALBERTA GYMNASTICS FEDERATION€¦ · Patterson, Yolande Kielstra, Kari Binder, and Tawnya Tourangeau. Gymfest continued to be a celebration of recreational gymnastics. Saturday saw

mentorship programs across Alberta. In future years, further evaluation on membership numbers in the Acro program will hopefully provide additional mentorship opportunities for our members. The final pillar is athlete support and leadership. In the coming years, a new section will be added to the AGF website with the intention of providing additional information for athletes and parents in the areas of community and sport science, personal development, career development, and academic opportunities. The team will continue developing these pillars over the next three years and will ensure that this strategic plan will continue to move

the organization forward in a positive direction.

Along with all of the work done to implement the strategic plan, a great amount of time has been spent developing a hosting strategy that will support clubs in Alberta in their desire to host Provincial events. A new equipment contract was signed bringing forward new opportunities for clubs interested in hosting these events. Our governance committee has also been working very diligently to ensure that our policies and procedures are up to date and accurate.

The AGF staff, under the strong leadership of CEO Scott Hayes,

has worked very hard over the last year and should be very proud of their accomplishments. Thank you to the membership for your continued support of our sport and the Federation. We are a strong organization with many opportunities and will continue to be successful in future years.

Sincerely,  Katie Biberdorf

The 2015–2016 season was another successful year for the Alberta Gymnastics Federation (AGF). Led by our strategic plan and guided by our core principles, AGF continued to develop and implement our strategic opportunities. AGF’s clear focus on these strategies and the

dedication of our Board and staff members were crucial to delivering strong performances – despite the economic downturn the province is currently facing.

This conviction provided opportunities for AGF to improve as an organization and continues to provide valued services to the membership.

The AGF membership is just over 50,000 members with 87 member clubs. This establishes AGF as the 2nd largest gymnastics organization in the country. There are currently over 295,000 individual gymnastics members nationally, belonging to 800 local clubs.

AGF continues to be a strong and viable organization. Annual funding from the Alberta Sport Connection has been secured and public partnerships at both the club and provincial level continue to improve. With the current state of the economic situation within the province all gymnastic members and supporters will need to rally together to ensure the Federation’s continued success. Whether it is completing a Government sponsored survey or writing to your applicable member of legislature, all Albertans need to convey the message that investing in ‘Sport’ is a wise decision.

The season began with AGF, in conjunction with Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique (GCG) hosting the 2015 Trampoline Gymnastics (TG) Canadian Championships in Calgary. Over 370 athletes, coaches and judges from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia participated in the event. Following TG Canadians, WAG and MAG artistic athletes participated in the Western Canada Summer Games in Wood Buffalo, AB. During the weekend of October 16-18, AGF hosted a very successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Calgary. The always entertaining AGF Awards Gala also occurred in conjunction with the AGM. During the final months of the year, AGF was heavily engaged with the hosting of various training camps, Trials, and of course, our various Provincial Championships. On behalf of the Federation I would like express my gratitude to the countless volunteers who gave their time in order to make these events the success they were. I would also like to sincerely thank the AGF member clubs and their members, along with our corporate sponsors and suppliers, for their ongoing support and generosity.

The success experienced by AGF members participating nationally and internationally, combined with all of AGF’s sanctioned events, provided a great opportunity to showcase our athletes to the media and general public. As result of the success achieved by Albertans, the gymnastics community received excellent media visibility, including front-page coverage on several of the provincial papers and a noticeable increase in all of our social media outlets.

In terms of operations, AGF is transitioning into the first year of our new 2016-2020 strategic plan. The 2016-2020 strategic plan consists of four main pillars; Club Support & Development, Coaching and Judge Development and Leadership, Gymnastics Awareness and Athlete Support and Leadership. Each of these pillars contain specific yearly goals and objectives that the AGF Board and staff are committed to achieving.

Each year I reflect and continue to admire and respect the talented and dedicated group of individuals I work with day in and out . This past year AGF said goodbye to longtime colleague Krista Morris and welcomed Bogi Gyorfi and Karen Beresnak (a one year maternity leave for Carolyn Foster) to the AGF Team. The leadership and knowledge displayed not only by the staff and Board, but by the volunteers as well, contribute to our yearly success and growth of the Federation.

Working together with our members and our partners, AGF continues to strive for excellence and innovation. Through the diverse and expanding talents of the AGF staff, Board and volunteers we are excited about our role in continuing and enhancing gymnastics opportunities for all Albertans.

We are all passionate about our sport, and together we can make a difference.

RECREATION GYMNASTICS

The 2015-16 season marked the end of the AGF four-year strategic plan and the beginning of the new four-year cycle.

Many programs and initiatives within the strategic plan were implemented or enhanced during this past year. A reflection of 2015-16 saw measurable success in the implementation of the mentorship program with two mentees and four mentors. We look forward to the continued growth of this valuable program.

Implemented this year were the Club visits which had AGF staff visiting 10 clubs. This new initiative provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect with long standing members and put faces

and names together with new ones. This initiative opens the dialogue between AGF and its members and promises to be a valuable tool for both AGF and member Clubs in the future. This year a dedicated and passionate group worked on and explored ways to support clubs in offering more inclusive programming for special and adaptive needs. The inclusion handbook is slowly taking shape thanks to Tanya Vanden Boer (chair), Geoff Patterson, Yolande Kielstra, Kari Binder, and Tawnya Tourangeau.

Gymfest continued to be a celebration of recreational gymnastics. Saturday saw the athletes and their coaches learning new skills and team building as they participated in workshops. On the final

day 295 participants and 30 coaches delighted audiences with 16 creative, unique routines.

The 2015-16 Awards Gala saw an increase in the Top Banana Awards presented. Eleven recreation coaches, six athletes, four volunteers, four CanGym Gold Badge recipients and three performance/demo groups were all recognized for their commitment and dedication to the sport of gymnastics.

The Kids Can Move program continued to support elementary schools in Edmonton and Calgary, with their gymnastics programming. Arming teachers with the tools needed to confidently instruct gymnastics in their classrooms and giving students the

opportunity to experience grassroots gymnastics in a fun and engaging format.

It is exciting to see the strength of the recreation community growing in Alberta. There are key individuals to be thanked for their continued support of AGF and the development of recreational gymnastics: Kelly Wills (chair), Karen Beresnak, Kari Binder, Caitlyn Reid and Brenda Krossa. Thank you so much for being a part of the Recreational Development Committee (RDC). As well, thank you to Scott Whiteside, Jenna Lippens, Ashleigh Wills, and Mikayla Salmond, and Heather Tillapaugh our members at large.

WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS

This past year there were many changes in Alberta WAG program including staff and program changes. The focus was to help coaches, athletes and judges transition to the JO Program. The JO system implementation was welcomed and supported by the majority of the clubs and from the received

feedback, it was a very successful year for new initiatives in Alberta. AGF has already recognized the growing number of competitive athletes with the JO system which is allowing more kids to participate in the sport’s competitions.

The Women’s Program also had many highlights. Increasing developmental numbers, growing High Performance Athlete numbers, more coaches being certified at all levels, strong representation by Alberta teams at provincial and national competitions, additional judges moving to the National and Brevet system, all indicates that the Women’s Program in Alberta is STRONG!

CLUBSWith the addition of a few new clubs starting competitive programs, we now have 41 gymnastics clubs in Alberta offering women’s competitive programs.

COACHING CLINICSThis year the focus was on transitioning to the JO system. There were several opportunities offered to help coaches and clubs with implementations. AGF organized a JO 4-5 Compulsories Clinic in September 2015. Nicole Langevin, owner of Precision choreography, presented with more than 100 coaches and judges from across Alberta attending. AGF also hosted a JO Mock Meet in November 2015, with 64 athletes and their coaches, along with 9 judges attending. Shelley Lefler, a National judge from Ontario was invited to help with her guidance.

JUDGING CLINICSAlberta held 4 provincial judging courses. Fifty one provincial judges had access to two Compulsory courses and two Optional courses while 21 judges participated in the National Judges course. There has been a slight increase in judging participation following the JO system.

COMPETITIONSAGF was involved with seven competitions in the 2015-16 season.

The Alberta Winter Games are held every two years, and this year, Medicine Hat hosted a very successful multi-sport Games. Canmore Gymnastics Club hosted the Trials to AWG where 210 athletes represented all eight zones to qualify for the 64 team spots on the JO 6 and 7 teams.

A new format for Southern Zone Championships was introduced and this included hosting the meet in conjunction with the University of Calgary International Cup (UCIC). Two hundred and sixteen athletes from Southern Alberta competed in JO 4-7 to vie for the Provincial Championships in April.

North Edmonton Gymnastics Club was the site of the very busy Northern Zone Championships and Trials to Westerns.

Two hundred and thirty six JO 4-7 athletes competed at this event while 124 athletes in JO 8, 9, 10 and Aspire competed for a spot on their respected team for Westerns.

The Western Canadian Championships in Richmond, BC was a huge success. Teams from Alberta

brought home seven Team medals (four Gold), 12 All Around medals (four Gold), and 42 event medals (15 Gold).

Provincial Championships moved north this year, with Norfort Gymnastics Club in Fort McMurray hosting the large multi-discipline

event. Three hundred and thirty nine WAG athletes, from JO 5 to High Performance levels showed their skills over this three-day competition. During the two-day

JO 9 and 10 Trials to Canadians, a very strong team formed to represent Alberta at the upcoming Canadian Championships.

At the 2016 Canadian Championships in Edmonton, Team Alberta performed exceptionally well this year. The JO 9 team won Gold and both JO 10 teams left with the Silver medal around their necks. We have seen outstanding performance from JO 9 Moira Evans who won

the AA Champion title, JO 10 Madeline McLellan grabbed AA Silver and HP Novice Kyra Cato received AA-Bronze.

The featured high performance athletes Madison Copiak and Brittney Rogers qualified to attend the Olympic Team

Selection camp in Gatineau, Brittney earning a spot on the Olympic Team and Madison achieving the alternate status.

For the high performance athletes, CGC hosted the Elite Canada Screening event that determined which athletes can move on to Elite Canada, where their High Performance status is achieved. Seven athletes qualified for Elite Canada. Alberta also had another nine athletes at Elite Canada in Halifax collecting seven medals. Alberta had 17 athletes on the High Performance list including the four National Team members. AGF is very proud of the National Team athletes who represented Canada at International events. Madison Copiak’s best performance was the World Cup, placing 6th All Around. Brittany Rogers

finished second on Vault and third on Bars at Pacific Rim. Meaghan Ruttan finished 10th All Around at Gymnix and Sydney Soloski captured silver and bronze at her first World Challenge Cup in Slovenia.

A new initiative, the AGF Excel Team Tour international training camp and competition was introduced this year. It provided support for seven Junior and Novice HP athletes, four coaches and one judge to help funding their travel to attend to Arques International Training Camp/Competition in France. The project was a huge success with many opportunities for all to develop their international competition experience.

COMMITTEESThe 2015-16 season was guided by dedicated committees. The WPC experienced a structure change in October to help identifying specific roles. The WPC and WJC and their subcommittees worked tirelessly to provide leadership and vision for the future of WAG gymnastics in the years to come.

ACROBATIC GYMNASTICS

This has been another great year for Acrobatics in Alberta with a few new “first ever” and growth of memberships, participation and local events. Alberta athletes were the

only ones to represent Canada at the first ever Pan American Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships and managed to bring home a silver medal. Salto hosted its first ever acrobatics competition to run in conjunction with a predominately artistic competition. Edmonton lead the way this year with three registered competitive acro clubs and Calgary followed with two. Alberta athletes at the World Age Groups competition in Putian, China were amongst the first ever to

make it into finals (surpassing Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique’s (GCG) expectations of placing in the middle of the pack).

Alberta continues to work closely with GCG and the other provinces and is looking forward to growing the sport in two focused areas of coaching and judging development.

CLUBSFive (up one from last year) Alberta clubs with 60 registered athletes offered competitive ACRO gymnastics programs.
