COVER STORY
Tlu-piich Games kick off this weekSUSAN QUINN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
The annual Tlu-Piich Games kick off Tuesday, Aug. 11 in Port Alberni with track and field events and opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. at Bob Dailey Stadium, and a culture night at 7 p.m. at the Port Alberni Friendship Centre.
The Tlu-Piich Games brings families together, celebrates youth and promotes healthy living, Games coordinator Marissa Bennett says. She anticipates at least 2,000 athletes and spectators will attend from Tseshaht, Hupacasath, Ditidaht, Huu-ay-aht, Ahousaht, Uchucklesaht, Tla-o-qui-aht, Ucluelet, Mowachaht/ Muchalat, Pacheedaht of Port Renfrew and
Snuneymuxw of Nanaimo.
The theme this year celebrates Nuu-chah-nulth youth. This year the Games will focus on providing positive experiences for our youth in various sporting competitions and instructive sporting clinics that bring
families together, Bennett said.
Spectators are welcome at any of the sporting events and others such as the free movie night Aug. 12 at Bob Dailey Stadium.
This year, more traditional and language games will be offered, she
added. On Friday, Aug. 14 the Tlu-Piich Games is putting on a free family picnic at Williamson Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Join us and Scotiabank...to learn some traditional games, enter a team into the Nuu-chah-nulth Language Treasure Hunt and
play a fun game of Lahal at Williamson Park.
An important part of the Games is the Sports Hall of Fame, where family members can nominate people who are or were well-rounded athletes. Newest members will be announced at the opening ceremonies.
It gets pretty emotional, Bennett said.
Photos of past winners will be hung in the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) office.
On behalf of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council we would like to thank the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First
Nations for allowing the 2015 Tlu-Piich Games to occur within their territories, NTC president Debra Foxcroft and vice-president Ken Watts wrote in a joint statement.
Follow the Games on Facebook page, Nuuchahnulth Tlupiich Games.
Trip down memory lane takes time when scanning photos, negatives
While scanning my cousins photos and negatives last month, I came across photos/negatives from other people that I knew or had been paid to photograph them. I decided that now is the time to address the issue of 13 large boxes full to the brim with catalogued negatives and photographs in colour and black and white dating from 1960 up to 2002.
In one month I have managed to empty only one carton. The way that I work is this: I pull out the manila folder, check the date and the content and decide if I shred or
not. If I decide to keep it the first thing that I do is to create a file folder on my desktop with the name of the person/place/thing, then scan in the negs
or photo at 800DPI (1200DPI took too long to scan) in a TIFF (non-lossy) format on my Epson Photo 4990.
I open Adobe Photoshop Elements
and minimize it so it sits on the bottom dock.
I retrieve the file folder from the desktop.

Good lumber starts with solid foundation
The Alberni Valley News introduces a new monthly column, Shop Talk, by woodworking expert Michael Kampen.
You can purchase lumber that has been dressed on all sides but the cost of this additional processing is reflected in the higher price. Purchasing your lumber as rough 4/4 stock allows the greatest flexibility and the lowest cost but you will require some machinery to prepare it.
When working with solid lumber, success for any project requires stock that is flat, straight and
which has the faces, edges and ends are square to each other. Any joinery or gluing up of panels will be dependent on how well you prepared your stock initially and you cannot cover up shortcomings at this stage later in the process.
The machines you use and the order you use them is critical when preparing rough lumber. Remember the acronym FEE: this stands for Face, Edge and Ends.
You will need three tools to prepare your rough stock: a jointer, a thickness planer and a table-saw or miter saw. On the jointer, the infeed table is offset from the outfeed table. As the material moves over the knives, any irregularities in the board are milled away,
resulting in a flat and smooth surface.
With the first side dressed, move on to the thickness planer. This machine has a single table with the cutter head above the work. Place the smooth surface from the jointer face down on the table and the overhead knives will remove material from the remaining rough side.
When the board emerges, it will be flat and a consistent thickness from one end to the other. Skipping the jointer and moving directly to the thickness planer will result in a board that is smooth but it will not be flat. Using a
jointer for both faces will result in a board that is thinner at one end than the other.
Next, confirm your fence is square to the knives on the jointer; we use a simple digital angle gauge to get the setting perfect. Next, with the face of the board pressed firmly against the fence, joint one edge of the board. This provides a surface at a perfect 90 degrees to the two faces.
To prepare the final edge, move back to the thickness planer and run the piece through with the good edge down. This will give you the final edge square to the other two faces and parallel
to the first edge, resulting in a board that is of consistent width along its length.
Cut one end of the board, removing any checks that may have formed as the lumber was dried and then
cut the other end as required.
When using a miter saw to cut the ends, remember to set up it up carefully. With each cut you are cutting in two different directions,
side to side and up and down.
Michael is the resident woodworker and manages the CNC Shop at Westcoast Home Hardware.

MICHAEL KAMPEN/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Preparing rough stock lumber requires three machines, starting with the jointer, right, then the planer, above, and finishing up with a table-saw or miter saw. You can remember the order of machines to use with the acronym FEE Face, Edge and Ends.

From / A2Once Ive done that
I hit shift/click on the photos that I want to open. Then I right click on the photos and choose Open with Photoshop.
Bingo! The photos are in Photoshop ready to be manipulated. I choose the first one, using Levels, and slide the arrows on the Black/White/Grey until I am satisfied with the photo. Then I blow the photo up to 100 per cent and slowly scan the image for dust marks, scratches, and anything that needs Cloning or the magic BandAaid.
I save the image as an 8 x 10 300 DPI TIFF file in the same folder.
I go back to the image, choose the brush with my
copyright on it and stamp the photo then I re-size the photo to 4 x 6 at 75 or 100DPI, save the photo as a JPG on the floating on the desktop. This image is small enough to e-mail someone (and not have them wait for 10 minutes until it downloads while they curse your name) or even put on Facebook or on Craigslist.
If it is a photo of a person then I try to find an e-mail or private message them on Facebook and include the 100 DPI photos. When I am sure that the person has received the small format photos then I proceed to shred the negs and or photos (I keep one photo aside for me).
Some people have contacted me wanting
larger DPI images so that they would be able to blow the photos up so I send them the large DPI TIFF photos..now you know the reason why I have saved the photos as two separate files, one large DPI file to blow up and on small DPI file to e-mail.
I then save the file folders on a separate external 2-terrabyte hard drive.
Editors note: This will be the final Digi Pixels column as Norman Silverstone will be moving away from the Alberni Valley. We have appreciated his column running in our newspaper for the past few years and wish him all the best. His work can be seen on his website at www.silverstonephotos.com.
