TAkENA LANDING INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL – Saturday January 14, 2012

Bundle up, brave the winter elements, and join us for a few hours of maintenance in an area where we removed invasive ivy and planted native plants last year. Beat the winter doldrums with this hot- chocolate-fueled event.

VALENTINES CLEAN-UP- Saturday February 11, 2012Do something special with your Valentine! The old leaves are down and the new leaves are not yet out. The litter we can’t see the rest of the year is waiting for us to pick it up! Meet at Monteith Park Gazebo at 9 a.m. for maps and supplies. Then spend some quality time with your Valentine making Albany a better place.

BRING A LIMB/TAkE A TREE- Saturday March 10, 2012

it’s time to clean up what old Man Winter left behind. Albany Parks and Recreation uses hundreds of yards of wood chips every year to maintain our trails and natural areas. Haul your woody debris from winter to the lakeside parking lot at Timber Linn Park and we will chip it up to use in the parks. While you are there you can pick up a free native seedling to plant and care for.

PLAYGROUND PREPARATION DAY-Saturday, April 14, 2012

Take a few hours on saturday, April 14 and help us spiff up the playgrounds for a great spring and summer of play. We’ll meet at centrally located Lexington Park at 9 a.m. and work to improve four popular playgrounds.

east Thornton Lake natural AreaThe east Thornton Lake natural Area (eTLnA) will be a place to discover plants and animals that are disappearing from the Willamette Valley and are already gone from most cities. Visitors will be able to experience a recovering oak savanna on the only natural lake within Albany’s limits, a remnant of the Willamette River’s ever-changing path through this region. Trails, a pavilion, and a nature-based playground will be built to teach children the history of the relationships between nature and humans—both the kalapuya people and settlers of european descent.

and Kalapuya Interpretive Center

VOLUNTEER:Volunteers are needed now to assist in raising money to complete the purchase of eTLnA.

For more information, contact:ed Hodney, Director Parks and Recreation City of Albany [email protected] 541-917-7769

DONATE:• The City of Albany has already paid $1.25 million in cash toward the purchase price

of $2.25 million.• A promissory note has been signed, giving the City a short amount of time to raise

the remaining $1 million. The City plans to raise the remainder through grants and private contributions.

• Your help is urgently needed. Help us reach our goal of $100,000 in private donations toward the purchase of this unique and remarkable property. Cash donations and pledges may be made either through the City of Albany or the Calapooia Watershed Council. Go to www.albanyparksandrecreation.org/etlna to donate today!

An asset for the entire community...The east Thornton Lake property offers Albany an opportunity to protect, restore, and

transform the city’s most significant natural area into a site for learning and enjoyment that will benefit the entire community. east Thornton Lake, Albany’s only natural lake, is home to plants and animals that are disappearing throughout the Willamette Valley and are especially rare in cities. Here, animals like the western and painted pond turtles–listed as “critical” on the state of oregon’s sensitive species list–find a place to thrive among the lake’s waters, wooded shoreline, and adjoining fields.

The east Thornton Lake property will become an invaluable asset for the City. supporters of the proposed park have built partnerships to design, fund, and implement an ambitious restoration and education vision for the site. This vision will restore the property to an oak savanna and educate visitors about its natural and human history–including its important links to oregon Trail pioneers and the kalapuya indians. When complete, east Thornton Lake natural Area will host school groups, researchers, cultural workshops, and historical displays, benefitting Albany and drawing visitors from throughout the region.

presented by

. . .and sponsored by

albanyparksandrecreation.org

As music plays, the dazzling Valentine’s Performing Pigs dance, jump in the air, play catch with the

audience, run up teeter totters, slam dunk basketballs, pop balloons, roll

barrels, and madly roar across the stage on scooters and skateboards!

This wonderfully interactive performance combines physical

comedy, jokes, juggling, object-balancing, comedy magic, and impromptu comedy

situations. Angel brings 25 years of comedy experience to this fun-filled show

of hilarious antics.

The Alphabeticians love playing quirky, funny, upbeat songs for kids and families. Mr. Hoo and Mr. E combine humor, clever

songs, interactive elements, and an all around great stage show to entertain

people of all ages. Adults will have as much fun as the kids!

The Red Yarn Puppet Band is a lively performance group that uses puppets and

interactive storytelling to breathe new life into American folk, rock, blues, and

country songs about animals.

Unusual, funny, and original, Henrik’s show covers almost

every combination of skill - from balancing atop an 8’ tall, freestanding

ladder to “Neonman”, a glow-in-the-dark optical illusion!
