Visual Art In the Visual Art elective, learners will explore and experiment with a wide variety of wet and dry art media. They will investigate the key elements of line, shape, form, tone, colour, texture, space, and design principles. Workshops will allow learners to explore new techniques and a variety of materials with which they can develop and implement in their personal learning. In the Visual Art Elective, learners have the opportunity to discover, develop and apply new techniques in art making to their personal and individual ideas for art works. Learners will explore and express their identity through art, investigating how artists choose tools, techniques, and materials to express their ideas through researching artist models and applying learned skills to their own works. They will explore the themes of abstraction and figure drawing. If time allows, Learners will be given the opportunity to undertake personal inquiry projects and will visit and participate in a programme at the Auckland City Art Gallery. Learners will explore the theme of portraiture through their own photographs and will create 3-D constructions based on personal identity research.

Paintings both big and small are produced on many different surfaces, where learners explore an artist and appropriate the style. Learners consolidate their understanding of art elements and principles and how to interpret art and evaluate their own art through the use of the Visual Art elective skills grid. This elective is designed for both the recreational artist who wishes to develop their own ideas and styles, and for learners who wish to improve and expand their knowledge and skills for their repertoire. Learners may also choose this elective to either prepare for Year 10 Visual Art and Year 10 Art Design/Photography courses, supplementing folio production for their future NCEA courses. So, if you like to draw, develop innovative problem solving strategies, be creative, and want to learn how to use different art styles and new techniques in art making, then this is an elective subject for you! If you wish to learn more about your favourite artist, choose art elective and immerse yourself in their work. If you are a budding Picasso, Michelangelo, Van Gough or Monet, we want you in this elective!

Dance

Dance is a performance-based subject. All learners will be expected to perform at assemblies and in group performances throughout the semester.

The initial focus will be on expanding learners’ skills in relation to a variety of dance styles including ballroom and contemporary. Guest tutors will teach the learners specialised skills. Learners will be involved in both performance and choreography and will create and re-create dance works through the process of manipulating a range of elements, devices, structures and choreographic devices.

Learners will be expected to share their skills with others in the class and to take part in all dance styles at the introductory level.

Learners will also learn basic dance vocabulary, body science, fitness, health and nutrition.

For those that need extending, we continue building on the skills and capabilities and explore further dance genres, including hip-hop and cultural dances.

Once various styles have been explored, learners will choreograph performance pieces and explore the interpretation of lyrics through movement both individually and in groups.

This subject will interact and combine with the music elective to produce sound tracks and to increase performance opportunities.

Learners are required to wear sports uniform, black leggings or long shorts and sports top, or black leggings and leotard.

Drama

Do you ever explore in your mind what it would be like to be another person, to exist in a different time, or how you might act in a different situation? Would you like to learn more about how the way you move, the words you say and the intonations used while speaking can alter the way you communicate with others?

In drama class learners follow a process of planning, creating, rehearsing, presenting and reflecting as they act out real or imagined events. Learners explore feelings and their consequences by analysing what characters in a script or text do and why.

Drama classes help you to develop self- expression, creativity and imagination and teach learners to listen to the views of others and to be able to contribute your own ideas in a way that is acceptable to the group. The ability to communicate effectively is highly valued in our society and can lead to things like better jobs, deeper relationships and even feeling more

positive about yourself because you can express your thoughts and feelings more clearly.

learners will have an opportunity to develop improvisation skills. You will have an opportunity to participate in the SGCNZ UO Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival and to perform in a Drama Celebration Evening.

Learners will develop dramatic skills including improvisation, building and sustaining a character, mime, voice projection, role-play and basic stagecraft as well as sophisticated communication skills through language and movement. The development of personal confidence and trust in others and working as part of a group are integral to each class. You will extend your understanding of how society works as you experiment with real and imagined social situations.

As an extra, Drama students will have an opportunity to take part in the inaugural 2020 UK Drama trip.

Music

Music Performance is about freedom of choice and the right to self expression. This elective will challenge the learner to broaden their horizons and interact with their art at a deeper and more personal level.

Throughout each semester, learners will have an opportunity to participate in bands, music ensembles, creative hubs, songwriter sessions, production and live performance. The Music they choose to perform and create is their choice and they are encouraged to breathe life into that which is meaningful to them.

The course will provide the necessary skill set for each learner to excel in all areas; including but not limited to Music theory, aural perception, analysis, Music history, composition and performance. It is expected that by the end of the semester the learner will understand Music theory and how to apply this practically.

Further opportunities to extend in Music will be provided in the form of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. For co-curricular, the Music department offers performance bands, ensembles, choirs, an events production team, clubs, Music performance evenings and theory tuition. For extra-curricular opportunities there are performance and composition competitions, audio production sessions, artist masterclasses, and industry workshops. The Music department aims to accommodate for as many opportunities to empower the learners to excel in their pursuit for excellence.

In aid of this, it is encouraged that learners enrol in instrumental music lessons either at AJHS or externally. Learners are then able to come to class prepared and confident. Instrumental lessons at AJHS are available at a subsidised rate

If a learner wishes to extend themselves further,

ABRSM Theory Examinations are also available and recommended.

Music has always been a safe haven for the introverted, extroverted, the misunderstood and the different. It is a collective community of individuals who work to make the world beautiful again. Learners will not only be a part of this but the valuable personal skills they can develop in this course cannot be ignored.

By working in bands or groups, learners are engaging in teamwork, they are developing negotiation skills, problem solving, collective integration and the art of putting on a dynamic performance. They will read and write musical notation and symbols, and will listen to, analyse and appreciate music by completing topic studies on ‘The Blues’, New Zealand Music, Māori/Pasifika Music, Classical and Popular Music History. Here they will learn to have the difficult conversations that work to challenge and expand their minds. Through composition they will have the quiet time to create, they will learn about what is important to them and collectivise the very things that make them who they are.

It matters not whether they are a beginner or a virtuoso, the course is designed to cater to learners as individuals. In this way the learner is encouraged to measure their success solely by their own personal goals and not by the results on a test. Music is subjective and it is important that learners understand their freedom in choice. If a learner leaves this course with a deeper love and appreciation for Music, that is what is important. That is how our success will be measured.

History

“Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it” ~ George Satayana

The aim of the history elective is to get learners excited about our past, to broaden their general knowledge, and to develop a sound understanding of the world around them, so that they know how we got to where we are today.

Learners will take on the role of an historian while we explore topics from times long ago and relate them to events that are still affecting us today. The history elective gives students the opportunity to delve deeper and wider into topics not covered by core Social Studies.

In this one semester course, learners will use multiple forms of media to develop historian skills; skills needed to sift through the vast plethora of times past, such as researching, evaluating sources and interpreting information to form conclusions. Learners will engage with historical inquiry and research skills, construct historical debates, and complete document and source analysis (from political cartoons to physical objects, such as WWI diary entries).

In Year 9 learners delve into the Middle Ages period. By the end of the course they will be able to compare their own lives in 2020 to the experiences of those alive in Medieval Europe as well as have knowledge of significant people and events that helped form the society we live in today.

In the second half of the semester learners will have the opportunity to hone their skills as an historian. Provided with a term theme (e.g. “Ideas that changed History”) the learner will choose their own topic and carry out their own inquiry.

Mahatma Ghandi once said, “A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.” In history elective it is our desire to engender in students the vision and faith to make the world a better place, not to not repeat the mistakes of our past.

(Note: Learners will require a Chrome book or similar device, with which to research in class and to access homework and class resources  Extension Learning Subsidy: $25 (covers the history excursion)

Computer Science

“Whether we’re fighting climate change or going to space, everything is moved forward by computers, and we don’t have enough people who can code. Teaching young people to code early on can help build skills and

confidence and energize the classroom with learning-by-doing opportunities.” —Richard Branson, Founder, Virgin Group

Interested in making an app or a game? Want to learn to code and web script with HTML5? Interested in computers and the basics of computer science? This course requires no prior experience, will take

you from zero to hero or advance your knowledge if you are already a beginner coder.

During project 1 you will learn to create your own online website using HTML and CSS (used at all schools for Level 1 NCEA). Project 2 will show you how to create and animate sprites using Javascript (used at ASHS for Level 1 NCEA) and create an interactive digital outcome. Your final project is self chosen and directed.

Skills you develop through the Computer Science option include abstraction, algorithm development, deconstruction programming and pattern recognition. Once you have mastered the basics of HTML, CSS and Javascript you can then design and create an app, game or other digital outcome (including electronics - we have Arduinos) of your choice.

The learning occurs online, through activities at your own pace. You quickly move from programming with blocks to using and writing your own code.

It is highly recommended that the Y9 course is completed before Y10 as you will be applying the skills learnt to a larger project in Y10.

Work is submitted and learnt in several online learning environments and no ‘home’ software is required. This course will introduce you to the basics of Computer Science.

Year 9 Construction Technology New Zealand Curriculum Definition of Technology:

● Technology is an intervention by design, the use of practical and intellectual resources to develop products and systems called technological outcomes that expand human possibilities by addressing needs and realising opportunities. Adaptation and innovation are at the heart of technological practice. Quality outcomes result from thinking and practices that are informed, critical and creative.

● Technology makes enterprising use of its own particular knowledge and skills, together with those of other disciplines. Graphics and other forms of visual representation offer tools for exploration and communication.

● Technology is never static, it is influenced by and in turn impacts on the cultural, ethical, environmental, political and economic conditions of the day.

Year 9 Technology Education Course Outline

● In Year 9 the students are given a problem

to solve through the use of Graphics and

Technological Practice. The problem given

to students can be in the form of a theme,

a situation, a context and/ or a real life

design problem to solve.

The project for 2020 is to Design and

Manufacture a Patu/ Mere and Stand

Design that is of Personal Significance

● Using a Design Process that culminates in

the undertaking of Technological Practice

the students research existing designs and

materials that have been used in the

manufacture of contemporary products

and products from yesteryear. The

students then go about producing their

own designs, which will, through an

iterative process to refine a selected

design in order to produce an Aesthetic

and Functional Outcome. The use of

Graphics and Technological Practice

teaches students to problem solve using a

process that allows for the application of a

student’s individual intellectual and

cognitive style.

● During the course of the student’s design

process they are encouraged to be as

innovative as possible, think outside of the

box whilst producing outcomes at the

highest standard possible for their age,

level of life experience and maturity.

Design and Visual Communication (DVC)

What is Design and Visual Communication, or DVC? It is what you see around you all day, every day. Almost everything in your world has been created and designed, from the buildings you live in, study in, and shop in, to the clothes you wear, the phone you use, the bags you carry, and the wrappers around your food.

Would you like a future that allows you to be creative, draw, problem-solve and design? Design and Visual Communication teaches you methods of 3D drawing techniques and design practices. Explore design themes of your own choice in your visual diary. With DVC, learners will get to experiment with different media and modeling to explain design ideas. This is an elective that encourages you to develop your own design style and to explore your interests whilst investigating themes such as architecture, product design, transport, and more.

A big part of Visual Communication is learning how to draw properly. You will learn when explaining your designs, how to apply colour and rendering techniques to enhance your work. In this course, there are many different ways in which you can learn to draw. Monsters, cars, trucks, motorbikes, planes, and robots: we can draw all of these, step-by-step. Once you learn the process, most things can be drawn.

If you feel like being creative, if you want to learn how to create digitally, if you are interested in any sort of design, then this is the course for you.

Food Technology (including Catering)

Food Technology explores the world of food in our daily lives and its relationship to health and wellbeing. This elective builds on the knowledge and skills gained in Year 7 and 8 to set you up for a future as a Master Chef! Through practical classes learners will develop food preparation skills as they prepare, cook and sample food, gaining practical and time management skills. Learners will use the technology cycle to meet customer needs and opportunities, whilst understanding the importance of health and safety, teamwork, nutrition, cost awareness and presentation. Through this process, learners will practise and develop numerous cooking skills, cooking techniques and terminology.

This is real world learning where you will create innovative appetisers for catered school events. Along the way you will get a taste of what it is like to create a product for the food market through trialling and testing, going through both the ups and downs of developing a new and unique product.

You will individualise your learning by developing your own projects in line with your individual interests. Learners will cook with an extensive range of seasonal ingredients, recipes and equipment. Throughout the semester learners will maintain a portfolio of their ideas, the recipes they have used, photos of their work and an evaluation of their outcomes. Learners can explore topics such as baking, frying, preservation, sugar, dough, batter and more.

Languages

The study of languages develops and improves communication skills and gives students greater socio-cultural understanding. Language learning not only strengthens performance across the curriculum but also provides a means of improving global connections and career prospects.

It is our policy at AJHS that learners must study one of four global languages and/or Te Reo Maori.

We will, however, endeavor to support learners to study any language. As a commitment for this in 2020, if a different language is requested, we may be able to offer a class, subject to numbers selecting the subjects. There will be a member of staff present, who will help facilitate learners to learn the language. The learner will still select the language that they study and the appropriate level, to complete an online course, but a member of staff will be present to support learning a language. We believe that this will give learners real choice about which language they learn, should they choose to build on the language exposure experienced in Year 7 and Year 8.

A range of classes will be offered, although whether these run will depend on the numbers selecting. For all learners there is still the option of learning a language independently, which AJHS will support in negotiation with parents, who will cover the relevant costs.

Languages – Te Reo Maori

By learning Te Reo, and becoming increasingly familiar with tikanga, Maori learners strengthen their identities, while non-Maori learners’ may journey towards shared cultural understandings.

As learners learn, they come to appreciate that diversity is a key to unity. Te Reo Maori underpins Maori cultural development and supports Maori social and economic development in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. In turn, its use is becoming accepted across a wide range of professional arenas.

By learning Te Reo Maori, learners are able to participate with understanding and confidence in situations where Te Reo and tikanga Maori predominate and integrate language and cultural understandings into their lives.

Students will broaden their entrepreneurial and employment options to include work in an ever-increasing range of social, legal, educational, business and professional settings.

Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nona te ngahere. Ko te manu e kai ana i te matauranga, nona te ao. Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Maori.
