The Corvallis Cruisers are a Volkssporting Club that has suffered for a number of years due to lack of membership. Donna, both a Cruisers and a Fitwalker has been one of the faithful in Corvallis. Fitwalkers have increased efforts to be supportive by including Corvallis Year Round Events on the Thursday Walks calendar. We recently helped with the daVinci Days Walk on July 17, hosted by the Cruisers and OTSVA.

Summer Sun
Sun protection is imperative at any age. Contrary to myth, most sun
damage is not done during childhood. In fact, adults over the age of 40 have the highest UV exposure, and the risk
of developing melanoma (the deadliest from of skin cancer) doubles
if you have five or more severe sunburns anytime in your life.
Keep covered out there!
Last year Americans went through about 50 billion plastic water bottles. Fill up a reusable water bottle at home and bring it with you.
Northwest Art and Air Festival Fun Runs
August 28, 2011 • Timber Linn Park
10K, 5K, and Kids 1K
Hi,
My name is Erin and I am an intern with
Albany Parks and Rec. I am involved in
setting up a run that will take place
Sunday August 28th at Timber Linn park.
There is a 10k run, a 5K run/walk and a
kids 1 mile run. We are hoping that Fit
Walkers of Albany would like to take part
in this first year event at the festival
and hopefully continue to keep coming
back. The proceeds will be going toward
the Albany Community Pool to replace a
water handicap access chair and help
fund scholarships that low income
families can apply for.
Thank you for your time, and we hope to
see you there!

Rocks. There’s a few of them—okay, a lot of them. Along with some brush, limbs and litter. And Build Lebanon Trails could really use your help picking it up! Please join us at Cheadle Lake on Saturday, August 13.
In addition to appropriate work clothing bring gloves and hand tools. Picks, pry bars, wheelbarrows, chain saws and weed eaters are all welcome. Bring along a snack and water. Also, please contact us if you can bring equipment to haul debris to designated dump areas—front bucket tractors, pickups or even quads with trailers! www.BuildLebanonTrails.com

Dam Released
The start point of Fitwalkers” Shedd YRE was a great place to have a Fish Passage Celebration. The sun lit up Thompson’s Mills State Heritage Site making it picture perfect.
Sandy and Steve joined almost 100 people on Friday, July 29, 2011, to celebrate the removal of Sodom Dam that day. Sodom Ditch had run for so long it contained all the life of a river, except the Dam blocked fish smolt from entering the Calapooia River and access to the sea. Spearheaded by the Calapooia Watershed Council, it took 10 years and 12 organizations, including local, state and federal natural resource officials as well as landowners and farmers, to get rid of the Dam. So what’s a dam got to do with Thompson’s Mills??? Simple. For 120 years the dam diverted water from the Calapooia River to the Sodom Ditch to the Mills, the oldest water-powered grain mills in Oregon. In addition to speeches, food and beverages, the festivities included a shuttle out to the dam “deconstruction site.”
It’s not a pretty sight but when completed the Ditch becomes the Sodom Channel and provides better fishing as well as water management.
All these dam festivities where accompanied by live music provided by the local group Wild Hog in the Woods. One of these gifted musicians even played the saw!
If you are into dam removals, the Shearer Dam, which creates the millrace at Thompson’s Mills, is next. Shearer , the last dam on this water system, is scheduled for demolition on Monday, August 15, 20ll
East Thornton Lake Project
The Calapooia Watershed Council has been a long-time partner and supporter in the successful East Thornton Lake Natural Area (ETLNA) Project and will be collecting and temporarily managing private, tax deductible donations on behalf of the City of Albany. For more information and dam pictures go to www.calapooia.org
