Program for April 2:ELECTION DAY!!
Alamo Squadron’s
date with
Glacier Girl
Alamo Squadron – April 2015
The Prez NotesBy Art Nicholson
It’s election time! At the March meeting, Dick Mongtomery was nominated for President, Tony Neira, Henry Nunez, Gilberto Ojeda, and Rick Warring for Vice President, and Lee Washburn for Treasurer. Tony and Rick have since declined.
At the April meeting, we will take any additional nominations, and then you’ll vote. The winners will be announced and sworn in and will take office right away.
At the meeting we will also have a show ‘n tell and our monthly contest (an Open), but no program (unless you count the Election) and no raffle.
This is my last column as prez! I am not running for office, as I have another book I really need to finish. It’s been a real honor to serve you as president and ModelFiesta contest director.
I hope to see you all at the meeting at 7:15 on April 2nd at Northside Ford. In the meantime…
Happy Modeling!

Squadron’s Eagle Quest coming up in June in Carrollton, Texas
I’m going to start a new column
called Around Alamo City - hopeful-
ly every month - in which I will in-
clude news related to the world of
modeling. Items may include mod-
eling events and contests, airshows,
car shows, meet-and-greet events,
travels, and so on.
In my three and a half years living in
the Alamo City, I’ve found that
there are many events that can be
related to the modeling world. In
one event I even promoted heavy
metal music, and upon being asked
why, I explained that there are
items related to modeling in heavy
metal: figures, art work, models,
etc. One example was the English
band Iron Maiden, whom used an
airplane specifically designed as the
artwork they use in their album co-
vers. I helped a friend of mine to
de-
sign two paper models of the Boe-
ing 757’s that the band used to trav-
el on.
Anyway, there are many areas in
our everyday life that can relate
to scale modeling.
I will be glad to receive ideas, pho-
tos, articles, comments, e-mails
and phone calls regarding your
inputs on this to enrich
this column.
Lewis Warbirds Museum
To begin with, I shall tell you that
members of the Alamo Squadron
traveled to the San Antonio Interna-
tional Airport to attend a special
session at the Lewis Warbirds Mu-
seum. Among the Museum’s treas-
ures is one special WWII fighter air-
plane: the P-38 Glacier Girl. The air-
plane was restored to flying condi-
tion after being buried beneath the
ice of the remote Greenland Ice
Sheet for over 50 years. For that
extraordinary task, the Greenland
Expedition Society went to the re-
mote lands (or, should I say “ice”?)
in 1992 and melted a big tunnel in
the glacier to reach the flying ma-
chine.
And now we can see this astonish-
ing airplane here in Alamo City, alt-
hough not open to the public, but
with special invitation from the Mu-
seum. Nevertheless, the “Girl”
sometimes goes out to have fun at

count ourselves very
lucky to be able to touch
this treasure of aviation

Model Fiesta 34
And we still have some
news for the Model Fies-
ta 34! (aggh, that hap-
pens when you don’t go to the
event… ). I was pleased to know
that a friend of mine at the Paper-
modelers.com forum from Arkan-
sas came to the event, and won
some good
awards. Ray
Smith en-
tered a 1/144
AH-1 paper
model in the
small scale
rotorcraft
plastic cate-
gory, and it
was awarded
a 2nd place plaque. Then he sub-
mitted a 1/144 Spad SA-2 paper
model into the small air-
craft plastic category, and
it also was awarded a 2nd
place. On his own words:
“This particular contest
did not have a paper
model category, so these
models were placed into
an Open Category, which
was broken down into
several other classes, including Mis-
cellaneous Mechanical
and Miscellaneous Biological. If
memory serves, there were about
30 models, made of wood, plastic
and paper in these classes.
Then [my] 1/300 Santa Ma-
ria [paper model] was
awarded a 2nd place
plaque.”
By the way, these plaques
were sponsored by the Doo-
little Raiders Association,
which is around the Alamo
City, in Comfort, Texas;
home of our good friend,
the Jimmy Doolittle co-pilot,
Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Cole.
Then he went
on and on, by
being honored
with the Best
Open Subject,
by non the less
our own Gary
Emery’s Hill
Country Hobby.
So as you can
see, paper modeling is still making
noise at the IPMS events. I for one
hope to see more paper models in
the IPMS events around the Alamo
City!

Since I was a boy, this truck always
attracted me so much. I had opportunity
to see one in person in 2002, although it
was not like this, (only three models were
produced, and the three are different in
some way). I
took many pic-
tures. One day
in 2009 I was
looking nostal-
gically some
photographs
when I found
this truck.
I immediately
wanted to
make a model
of it, but after exhaustive internet search,
I found there was no kit available. So I
decided to build one by "scratch build".
And so I entered a Ferrari car web site and
asked if anyone had any information on
this vehicle. The next day I got an answer
from a modeler from Florida telling me
that he had information with the actual
measurements of the truck as well as a
picture of the truck profile. He sent me
the information by email and the first
thing I did was convert the measurement
of vehicle 1: 1 to 1:24 scale. I enlarged the
picture he had sent me to the proportion
of the scale and thus got the right size to
start building. I began to take measures
and record in the blueprint all my annota-
tions using the original drawing.
What worried me the most was the
wheels, and as I looked for kits on the
internet (I spend many hours at the com-
puter in the wake of this project) I found
that the AMT Chevy Astro truck kit had
the wheels very similar to the ones for my
project, so I bought the kit and with that
got the wheels.
That encour-
aged me a lot.
Using the
measures of the
wheelbase I
built a generic
chassis as I had
no reference to
the original Fiat;
I even wrote to
the factory to
see if they could share some information,
but they never answered me.
Once I built the
chassis with appro-
priate measures, I
could begin building
the cabin using the
measures from the
blueprint and they
were in fact accord-
ing to the general
structure of the
model. Using 0.40
plastic sheets and
Evergreen strips of
different measures I
started to give the basic shape, also used
putty to form the curved parts and give a
finish to the different components of the
bodywork. Using different pieces of
"Pandora's box" I could assemble the
needed areas for the interior cabin.
As these vehicles carried the Ferrari cars
to competitions to the different circuits in
Europe, they also had an area in the back
with some basic tools for emergency re-
pairs on racetracks, so for that I use the
Fujimi kit with different tools and appro-
priate equipment, considering using
equipment that was standard at that time,
no modern equipment! As it was dark
inside the "shop", I decided to light it; and
for that goal I search for model trains on
internet and found a kit of super-
miniature LED lights with switch and
battery, installed in a way that could not
be seen.
For the final touch, I used two different
shades of red lacquer paintings. The dark-
er: Model Master Flame
Red # 1965R; and the clear-
er: Bright Red Tamiya TS
49. A railway modeler from
Phoenix printed the decals
for me because a special
printer (ALPS) is required to
print the white color and he
had that hardware.
The rest is history. It was in
2009 that I started with the
idea of the model and I
finished it in 2014 - of
course not always working on it, as I had
other projects in between. Now I'm work-
ing on three cars that will go on the bus,
the way they used to do it in the 60’s.
